2022 Formula 1 Compared to Other Race Cars

  • There are many racing disciplines out there - light and grippy formula cars, Le Man prototypes, GT cars, stock cars and superbikes. Each discipline goes about racing in very different ways, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
    But - which is quicker?
Well, I have compared them all using a series of tests to figure this out and the answers may surprise you.
    -
Now we did this a couple of years ago, but since then Formula 1 and NASCAR have had enormous rule changes, affecting how they all stack up against the pack, so we have ripped up the form book and started again.
The tests being used are 0-60mph, top speed and lap time around a track.
Quick disclaimer, since not all of these cars have raced the same tracks, or done speed runs in the same conditions - there is no way to be 100% accurate with this. (Well, unless someone wants to lend us one of each)
But we can compare lap times at several different tracks to give it the best go possible.

Motogp is wild, how quick they go on straights and it's basically a dude hugging a bike. And when they turn they're just about touching the ground, usually less than 1 meter away from another rider's wheels. Crazy stuff.

1m35 f1 lap is 95s, 2m12 nascar lap is 132s and difference is 39% longer or 28% shorter but not 28% longer

Although I love endurance prototypes, I think Nigel is overestimating the 0-60 times for the hypercars. They do have 4W drive but contrary to the old LMP1 hybrid, I believe the electric power may only be deployed from 120kmh (2021) and 190kmh (2022) to get the BoP in the hyperclass sorted. This would mean that all HY-class cars reach 60mph using only the internal combustion engine.

I would like to see a test conducted between different types of car styles where you would test the fastest cornering ability.
You would create a 1 mile straight away and then at the end of the straightaway you would have the cars do a U-turn to have them cross a pendicular finish line. You would record the fastest 180 degree turn and the fastest exiting speed. You would compare the speeds to a range of radius.
The cars could make a sharp turn or a really wide turn, The drivers could choose how slow or how fast they went down the straight away. The drivers would choose the radius.
You would look for which is faster leaning, drifting, or high grip.

a LONG straight to hairpin to a highspeed corner (flat) to a short straight and then a 90 degree turn to another short straight (to test exit speed) would be ideal. Alternating turning directions for tire reasons and possibly adding in a banked corner would probably be best though.

It's intended that way to level the playing field for smaller manufacturers that don't have the ressources to develop Hybrid systems. Toyotas hypercar f.e. is only allowed to boost its hybrid power at 190 kph, therefore could be much faster if allowed to boost straight on. Todays LMP2 are also nerved extremly due to now slower Hypercars. Also GT3 cars top speed is completly a BoP thing. At Daytona they were as fast as GTEs on the straights.

The short oval spec essentially removes the top element of the front and rear wings, and the oval spec/speedway runs the fully trimmed aero spec with a downgrade in turbo boost. IndyCars could run much faster in super speedway spec, but don't for safety reasons. Back in the CART days before the Handford device came in cars were occassionally hitting 250mph/400kph.
While IndyCar currently has a less sophisticated aero package in road course spec, the pre-"Universal Aero Kit" era had front wings that rivaled F1 in complexity.
