    Did you compare the optical sensor from Apple Watch 4 to the Vantage optical???

    • @TechyAgent
      @TechyAgent  5 лет назад +8

      I did, and it was significantly accurate. The AW4 can acquire my heart rate after a lifting set within 5 seconds. The Polar Vantage was never able to do it, even after I waited for more than a minute.

      Shit, and I so didn’t want to buy the aw4! Thanks!

    I’ve had the vantage v for 2 months and I love it! Is designed for running mainly and for professional athletes that demand more than just metrics but also an insight on overtraining recovery etc ... if you want for hiking it will not compare to a Garmin. If you are an athlete interested in training your heart mainly is great and it will keep you motivated. I recommend it highly. My wife has a Garmin that is $200 more expensive and is harder to get around and in my opinion not thought out for professional athletes but yet it’s gps is very accurate and the watch looks great. The vantage just got updated about a week ago and still has to go through a series of updates before the software is completed.

    Ive had my M for two weeks now. Works just fine. Few small screen changes I would like to make, other than that, very happy with it.

    Quite a quick review ... Nothing about Cardio load, orthostatic test and recovery pro. Nothing about running power. I heard him say something was “subpar”. Well, such a small review for such a complex device is exactly the same. Please note that reviewer is not even stating on what firmware version the review is based. OHR works well in certain situations. For other situations, use H10. Being critical is a good quality. But nothing is always all bad. Because obviously, in this review, nothing good was said.
    Sadly, I still favor notoriety when it comes to reviewers. I do not recommend this reviewer as a valuable advice provider.
    Polar Vantages can meet the needs of people who know how to use it and what to do with the data.

    • @SerErris
      @SerErris 5 лет назад +4

      fdaguindeau do you actually own one? I do and even with 2.0.7 it is still not a recommendation. It has to many flaws and bugs. The data is great, if you have a chance to get them. Oops lockup’s have been reduced, but still occur. Yo would buy a product, that does not have the best OHR ever ... and it is lacking a lot of functionality of others. The recovery pro feature looks great, but it is worthless if the watch does not track your trainings because of crashing. Maybe it is good enough for running professionals, that do not need a sports watch.

    • @fdaguindeau
      @fdaguindeau 5 лет назад +6

      SerErris I own one since November 1st. No lockups, no oops issue whatsoever. Use it for running. OHR is for use when not running to monitor heart rate continuously. When running, H10. Features will come. Not worried. Fits my needs. Not here to recommend to anyone because I don’t know other needs.

    Love my Vantage V. The optical sensor works great. Reflects my actual heart rate really well. They are adding more features for each firmware update. Yes, they did this with the V800 also. Not all feature released at the get go. Works great for trail run, Triathlons, pool swim etc. The screen is also really good in daylight. Screen is harder to read at night since some of the fonts are thinner in size, but other than that is has one of the best screens ever (See what dc rainmaker says). The touch screen works okay. If you are unhappy with the touch screen performance, just use the buttons. Also, they have one of the best warranties on the market. Great customer support also. They are always willing to listen and improve their product.

    There are many reviews out there on these two watches that are much more balanced, and some of them are quite positive. I found your review extremely lopsided and negatively biased. I go along with the comments posted below by fdaguindeau 1 week ago. I did not care to watch your video a second time, but I don't recall your emphasising that Polar plans several firmware updates in the coming months to add back features that are present in other of their models and for bug fixing. Another key point is that for reasonable HR accuracy the watch must be worn snugly on the wrist. I have owned a Vantage M for 1 month now and although not perfect, I am satisfied with it. Another positive point that your review did not mention, I think, is the very long battery life of these watches. And so on...

  • @MrRaimiza
    @MrRaimiza 5 лет назад +13

    Yeah… watches that got ~ 1/4 th of the Polar Vantage V battery life are so much lighter/ non-bulkier … what a comparison.

      Nop. It has Strength and others sport profile. Bootcamp, golf, etc. Its just heart rate sensors that don't work well. Even my amazfit GTR watch pretty close to the chest strap H7 results.

    Polar Vantage V with H10 packed in.
    Setup : easy, 10min ok
    Display:
    Visibility (special check point because of online feedback) excellent w/o back light !, excellent with backlight, which is triggered by the wrist „I want to look on my watch and turn my wrist movement“ OK
    First day : 1 Pop up of the Notification view -> crash and with restart (ca. 2-3s): NOK , no data loss : ok
    (dit not occur anymore)
    bracelet : anti slide, with extra security pin: Top !
    HR:
    Side by side comparison : OK
    H10 -> Polarbeat
    Vantage V equal with a 2 s adaption time: is ok
    There are actually indications to well position the watch on the („ right behind the wrist bone“), I managed t do it intuitively . And yes I have quite some pilosity on my fore-arms.
    I took the vantage V over the M , because of Gorilla glass display and metal body. I would not stand paying 280€ for the M and have quickly scratches and stuff on it. That is a very subjective ponderation of robustness criteria.
    One thing I count on is the route import into watch (upcoming in update roadmap),which the M does not support.
    Other features whose the Vantage V has over the M I will not use immediately. How ever the Training power feature seems very interesting for taking specific now conditions into account: Temperature , altitude, etc.
    H10 Belt +polar Beat,
    if you do not train with intervals or do not mind wrestling with multiple Apps for training fu.
    Same for the aw4.
    Polar M:
    Ambitious and comfort looking Multisport user, needing intervals ’n’ all in one place, do not mind plastic body, no need for altitude tracks, recovery fu etc. -> Most of us, including me (if i hadn’t had this plastic „allergy“)
    Polar V
    For those who want the best without further questioning or simply looking for the prestige (I can feel it wearing the watch) or those who have specific preferences only this watch adresses. (I do not want a smart watch, but a sports watch only.)
    Metal body
    Gorilla glass display
    Touch screen is handy, not absolutely necessary, but works also wet (under the rain)
    Recovery pro for preventing overtraining
    Download routes to the watch
    and all this in one place ( Ok you need the belt for recovery pro)
    Btw, this recovery pro feature I did not think to use. But it turned out to an excellent waring from over training.
    1 week, 4 trainings + sleep recording autonomy.
    Wear it all day because its new.
    I can recommend it so far.

    This video is really true, i have a vantage v and its not accurate in strength training or anything that push your heart rate up too fast. Its just good for daily heart rate if u want to buy it you have to buy chest belt for sure. But its a good looking watch.
    This review its the only honest review that i ever see for this watch.
    Thx alot

    This is what we get when gym guys make a review about a running watch with some smart features. Unfortunately the most common problem actually is anyone can be a you tuber and make reviews. Please stop making reviews about things you don't understand. Vantage V or M is for runners and nothing more. Have some smart features but not the most important thing. And your review was almost everything about smart features. And gym workout. That's why i love DC rainmaker, his reviews are very complete, objective and the most important is he knows what he are talking about

    • @RedWolf5

      tiago ferreira you are 100% right this review isn’t fair because that reviewing doesn’t understand the main purpose for this technology. I’ve had the watch for 2 months and its just great... better than any other watch out there if your goal is to train your heart. This is NOT a watch meant for hiking, gyms etc!

      I am a runner and agreed with Techy Agent’s review completely. I ran with Vantage M for 13 miles, my heart rate was inaccurate, GPS took like 10mins to be registered and the Step counts were so much higher. Most disappointing is the display, hard to read and the color is very dull. I returned the watch immediately after the run for a full refund. Not worth it. Polar did a bad job here, only the watch design attracted me to try it out in the first place.

      justRunCycle I’m sorry you’ve got a bad experience. I got nothing but great things to say about my Vantage V .. my wife is got a Garmin that is $800 and it doesn’t even come close to it... the M model can’t compare to the V in my opinion. The Training loaf pro and recovery load feature by itself is pretty unmatchable by any other watch in the market right now ... just my opinion

    hehe, had little up and down at start..but as i have use every Fenix out there i am use to the "start" problems..:)
    But now my V works like a champ, BUT..it´s not a smartWatch..if you after crappy things like apps and music on device..get another one.
    But for Pure run/walk and outdoor, it´s very solid this days.

    I did return the Vantage V, for same reasons you discribe in the review. Will add that the buttons on the watch is altso 2 hard to press, just that to start the timer is just to hard and take to long time. Looks like the software is basickly old maybe they used to long time make this. Totally agree with this review.

    I've had my Vantage M for a month and I love it. The screen works ok once u get used 2 it. The worst feature is the slow reacting HR. Also in indoor swimming the distance is all over the place. Can not recommend the watch for those who do lots of interval training and pool swimming. For myself it's a great watch.

      Yes, it does measure indoor swimming heart rate. Also the mentioned pool distance accuracy has improved after the recent update.

    • @henzik
      @henzik 5 лет назад

      Measures heart rate for indoor swim! It's so awesome. One thing though, that they are working on is that it counts only meters, then translates that into yards, which throws of the numbers. They will be fixing that.

    • @NegyedMisi
      @NegyedMisi 5 лет назад

      @@henzik I realized it does not count laps (basically lengths based on pool size). It considers 100m as one lap. Any experience with that? (I just did not have a chance swimming with it yet)

    Thanks for the honest review. I'm glad my M430 is still doing well. I was heavily looking to upgrade to the Vantage because I thought this watch would be great for running. I am gonna hold on to my M430 as long as I can. Maybe POLAR will address these discrepancies in future software updates...or else I will be forced to look at the Garmin Forerunner, Fitbit Ionic, or Suunto. I would hate to see Polar die with the Vantage series like Mio did with the Slice. Mio made a lot of mistakes: two reasons right off the top of my head were 1. No independent GPS. A real pet peeve of mine. I do not want to tether a phone to my watch while running. 2. Changing heart rate chipsets. Mio should have stuck with Phillips heart rate technology. I guess we will have to wait and see how Polar addresses this. To be continued...........

  • @insoninenine8749

    I'd love to see you do a new and more thorough review of the watch, now that the firmware has been upgraded a lot. Among them updates to the sleep tracking, which I believe is far ahead of the competition, plus thing like "back to start" navigation. While I think your criticism of the OHR and step counting is still valid, there is a huge part of the functionality you don't touch upon, namely the recovery system. I'd also like you to compare the OHR to other watches like Garmin, and ask Polar for an explanation of why you are getting such low performance.

    I read many titles about Polar Vantage M and V. Differences? ... Amateur, recreator (M) and professional athlete (V)? Home budget ...
    Differences are stylishly diminished or stylishly emphasized, this is an impression when reading M or V views. With my age (over 60), 3-4 workouts per week and main OWS (open water) sport, I should be happy with Vantage M!
    Differences: Does it mean that M and V equally show heart rate (what's older: more important), swimming in the pool, GPS tracking in the sea, running a GPS track, except for altitude, which would have to show the clock with the barometer better .
    ... So can the answer be to the question (should it be the same) - to make it easier to decide for model M.

      Phil Boardman these two watches are not comparable because they are two totally different thing you should make up your mind about what are you looking for. Smartwatch or sports watch. And then the decision will be easy I have the Vantage v and love it, right it is not finished but I trust Polar that will bring it to where it deserves to be. By the way happened to me the same with the suunto spartan wrist hr it wasn’t finished by the time I bought it but then improved a lot. It looks like it’s the way to go today.

      Pablo Horenstein 100% agree, but in this case, it would seem the “smartwatch” is a better “sports watch” too. I think only the Fenix 5X Plus is way ahead in terms of it’s sporting ability...

    Thanks again, Eric! Glad I passed on this one. I really like Polar as a company and their H10 chest strap is awesome, but where they are lacking is in their software development. They seem to have great idea people on the sports science side, but for whatever reason, they can't seem to get things done on the software side. Not sure if it's because they don't want to pay for top talent, or because Garmin, Apple, etc have already gobbled up all the experienced wearable device programmers, but it's too bad that they seem to be falling behind for whatever reason. I had been using their Polar Beat Android app to track GPS on my trail runs since I hadn't decided which GPS watch to buy yet, but at one point after an update, that stopped working and they haven't fixed it in months, so that was kind of when I started losing faith in them.

      Those guys focus on cardio, I focus on strength training, so you should expect to have different reviews. For strength training, this watch is behind the times. The Fitbit Versa has a better sensor for strength training than this does, and that's disappointing.

      Techy Agent true, Ray does focus on cardio specific info. DesFit does plenty of strength focused information, especially considering he primarily reviews devices focused on cardio specific use. You do provide a healthy amount of your perspective for both strength & cardio based use, which is why I watch your stuff. I feel this review wasn't your best as I've seen way more comprehensive/informed stuff from you however, thanks as always for providing information.

    If you have the current firmware that added timers etc on the 12/12/18 why didn’t you have the extra selection when you pushed the back button. I pre-ordered the vantage v and have not had a problem, polar were open and honest and said that they would start with the basic features and add the missing features incrementally (did you visit there website to see their roll out plan?) mapping and navigation is slated for a future update of the firmware. If I was going to run in the bush I wouldn’t rely on a wrist watch, so this feature is not high on my list of most valuable options.
    I have owned Fitbit watches and cannot actively recommend them to anyone, my wife has a Garmin and it has lots of gimmicky options that don’t add value as a fitness benefit.
    People buy brands like Fitbit, Garmin because they are the trendy, like people by under armour, Nike, hoka because someone said that they were good or just because everyone else has them and they want to be cool.
    Fitbit have a gps error for north/south use here in Australia and they admit the fact but don’t want to fix it because “it’s a very small market” they also admit to huge errors with heart rate and follow that with we want to sell volume.
    Garmin admit their heart rate is lacking but at least they said they are planning on some work to improve it.
    Everyone knows that to get accurate heart rate a chest strap is the best option, flexing your wrist introduces errors and all the manufacturers admit to that. Even riding a push bike with your watch moving up and down on wrist is not recommended.
    dcrainmaker is a very respected reviewer with a large wrap for the vantage m and v so not sure why you had so much trouble. He compared polar, Garmin, suunto, etc in a pre-release polar v watch running , riding, swimming etc and saw enough to be impressed and liked the firmware roll out plan. Polar wrote the code from scratch for this watch hence the firmware updates for features.
    A poor review overall with limited testing etc, won’t be selecting the “subscribe” button based on this.

Full stop. The post was never edited since publishing, save a few grammatical typos and one clarification on the syncing issues I've seen. That's it. I have had the Vantage V since release with no real issues with visibility or GPS (I always use a chest strap for HR as I believe wrist based oHR is never going to be as good). I use the Vantage to train for long distance & ultra running. I feel the flow ecosystem is very good for endurance athletes. I am looking forward to updates that will bring navigation & notifications, and it might be worthwhile indicating which firmware version you reviewed as the road-map indicates navigation and notifications are on the way. I would also expect the various kinks to be ironed out over time as was the case with the V800.

With 2.0.7 they only fixed the OOPS messages, but the other bugs are still there. On the good side I like the Trainingload Plus on my Vantage V a lot. I've been using Polar Vantage M for 6 months now. It is terrible in the pool. Completely unreliable measuring swimming distance. The watch doesn’t accurately record the distance. It’s off with quite a lot. Sometimes skips 25m, other times counts the distance completely wrong. Usually, the distance measured by the watch is significantly less than the real distance swam. The distance can be off by about 50% or more. The last time I used it in the pool it measured 650m when I actually swam 2000m. I contacted Polar. Basically, their response was: change your swimming technique, do not do flip turns ?!!! I'm not Michael Phelps but my freestyle technique is pretty good. Very disappointed with the watch and the way Polar is handling this problem.

      For strength and running, you’ll need something with a heart rate sensor that can do well in the gym for the strength training. In my opinion there are only two watches that I’ve tested that gave decent results with the built-in sensor during strength training and it was the Apple Watch series for and the Fitbit Versa.
      Those probably aren’t the watch is that most people would think of as being the most accurate for heart rate tracking, but interestingly enough, they are.

    However, the Vantage needs a lot of software updates to get out more accuracy out of the RAW data. I hope the software developers are capabal enough for this issues.

      The Polar A370 is actually significantly more accurate, in my opinion. It’s shocking to see them release something that’s actually worse than something they released years ago. I still recommend the Polar A370.
      I wouldn’t recommend running in the Saucony or Nanos, because both of them are a low tread sole. I prefer low tread for strength training, but I prefer a thicker sole for running. You CAN get the Saucony shoes in a thicker sole that are more suited for running.
      Between Garmin and Polar A370: the Polar has a better heart rate sensor, but the Garmin devices are better in every other way. The Garmin Instinct does take 24/7 readings, but I can’t remember if the readings are done at one minute intervals, or if it actually does take a constant reading. The Fénix 5 does take a constant reading.

      The A370 is a fitness tracker, the Vantage a sports watch. They both have OHR and I could not tell any diferrence in OHR accuracy. Just for the records and since so many faults in here, the A370 does not have GPS but could connect to a phone's GPS. Hence, GPS accuracy depends only on the phone connected.

      I am so used to the Polar H10 and the Polar beat app that I would love to stick with Polar and get the A370. If the Garmin Instinct can pair with the H10, can I still use the Polar beat to display data from the H10 even though it is paired with the Instinct? Or am I forced to use the Garmin app?

      codewriter I have had the Vantage V for almost two months now, and fortunately it has incorporated my previous runs with a polar M430 into it's training load calculations. Thus my two cents on those features:
      Training Load Pro & Cardio Load status: This is great. It's relatively simple math based on proven concepts, well presented and very actionable. Traing to stay in the 'productive' zone helps me to keep up my running volume over the winter eventhough I don't follow a specific training plan right now. Only nitpick: If you stop training for a while because of an illness or injury, you will get 'overreaching' warnings for a week afterwards.
      Recovery Pro: This one required a lot of extra effort (3 tests a week with chest strap) and then told me that I was good to go every day. I eventually disabled this since I couldn't get much use out of it or the tests. It might be valuable to you if you train on a higher level, but for a hobbyist runner like me it isn't.
      Running Power: I get that it's better than pace for the training load calculation because it's height adjusted. So it's nice that it's there and working quietly in the background. I haven't yet tried to maintain a constant power level during a run, but I suspect it'll be hard. Power is based on GPS pace, and the instant GPS pace is really volatile so I suspect Power will be similar. Of course you can get (auto) lap averaged power etc. but I didn't see the need so far. That said I live in a very flat area, it's probably a lot more useful for people running around hills/mountains.

I also have "lots'a" M430 data. For me, Training Load Pro and Cardio Load Status provide useful info. I don't mind working with Recovery Pro to get additional info, although this is a on-going task... And, yes, I'm still working on Running Power... You mentioned hobbyist, that works... I'm just a maintenance guy, high level training and competitive running are part of my past as hip replacement and 77 years of age have changed things considerably. Honestly, the Polar Vantage V and all the other training devices I've had since 1964 have been useful but also motivational. Ok, time for both of us to log one more mile! @Techy Agent 4:20 Garmin Vantage Heart Rate Sensor? Hmm, it feels kinda weird though, Eric for Garmin to have a "Vantage Heart Rate Sensor", I'd presume its the Polar Vantage Heart rate sensor you reckoned? Some "talk-typo" eh? haha.... but in honest fact, for fitness tracker, Garmin can be comparable to the likes of Suunto. I do have to give it to Polar for them coming up with their first ever round faced watch (as opposed to their old traditional styled squared type), but for the features on this is totally bonkers... the $$$ investment should at least be considered getting a FitBit - in my humble 2 cents :)

But the screen is extremely dim and the gesture backlight is insufficient. It needs dozens of software upgrades but i’m not sure that only software updates will solve all the problems. Then i ordered a garmin vivoactive 3 from amazon for 200 usd. I hope i made a good choice :)

    My experience with the ohr on Polar Vantage M is very very poor. It's always lower than real, with random falls to 90bpm when I'm about 160+ bpm. It's NOT reliable at all, I'm sadly waiting for a miraculous update before my last day to return the device with a total refund =(
    I have to agree with Techy Agent, ohr and other key factor on this watch are terrible. Even my Polar OH1 and Mio Fuse optical sensors outperform it greatly.

      The Vivoactive 3 offers their own variations of a similar score called Stress Score. It analyzes your heart rate variability while you are inactive to determine your overall stress. Training, physical activity, sleep, nutrition, and general life stress all impact your stress level. The stress level range is from 0 to 100, where 0 to 25 is a resting state, 26 to 50 is low stress, 51 to 75 is medium stress, and 76 to 100 is a high stress state.
      It also gives a VO2 max estimate.

    Not a fair review! Everybody knows that optical HR for hands moving exercises is not reliable - look on Garmin! Do the test Vantage vs Garmin during such kind of exercise. In this video, you can see that OHR in Vantage is 20 bpm behind but HR is decreasing -> needs more reaction time. Upcoming updates with navigation features and new DEC 2018 firmware update was not mentioned. Also touch screen control is not smooth after DEC firmware. Old activity tracking? What do you need more... Polar has everything what other competitors. Why did you mentioned features like Cardio load, orthostatic test and recovery pro which are features what other competitors doesnt have? ...and nothing about running power.
    Its a shame that these kind of unprofessional review can harm good products! But money are money... thumb DOWN!!!!

    • @TechyAgent

      Sorry to disappoint, but the Apple Watch Series 4 and Fitbit Versa both have optical sensors that can accurately detect a heart rate during strength training. I gave the polar more than 60 seconds durng my tests, and not once did it get it right. Even optical sensors from two years ago from Polar themselves weren’t that bad.

    • @rezzsvk

      Techy Agent Ok I see. In overall my comment was not just about OHR which is the one of the weird sensor tbh.

      My polar OH1 works very nice on the gym and running, it has a 2-15sec latency, but it gets your hr. My vantage M readings both running and doing gym workouts is total fiction. Averages 10-20 bpm lower, random falls from 160 to 90. I'm returning it.

    Techy Agent, I was hoping you would respond to the question proposed earlier, maybe the weekend has been the issue... Could you let us know what your thoughts are about the Vantage V features mentioned in previous posts, Training Load Pro, Cardio Load Status, etc. Lastly, there are some comments which question the validity of some of your review. I am not trying to "pick a fight", just point out that there are those who disagree with some of your conclusions. Guess that's part of what you do. Anyway, I am interested in what you think about the Vantage V features mentioned. Thanks.

    • @TechyAgent
      @TechyAgent  5 лет назад +1

      For sure, my review is always my opinion, nothing more and nothing less. So there will certainly be those who disagree. The only qualifier I would push back with is that I have had exposure to more wearable devices than just about anybody else, with a few exceptions of some other RUclipsrs, Who for the most part usually agree or come close to sharing my perspective. But I’m certainly no expert, I’m just the average Joe who has tried out a lot of fitness wearables. And I have gotten it wrong from time to time.
      Regarding the Training Load and Cardio Load: since both cardio and strength training exercises impact both of those scores, and since the built in heart rate sensor is terrible at tracking strength training - anyone who does strength training like I do will have training load and cardio load scores that are completely thrown off. In my opinion, the only case where those scores would be valuable would be for someone who does strictly steady state cardio exercise, like jogging or cycling. I don’t know if that makes sense or not, I can go into more detail if that wasn’t helpful.

      @@TechyAgent, thanks for the quick reply. One of the comments mentioned "an honest review" and truthfully that is the best any of us can do. You have been doing reviews for a while and we both know the old adage, "honesty is the best policy." I can sense that in what you have written. Keep doing what you do... I see it as a service to the rest of us. For me, your thoughts about cardio and strength training are very appropriate. Lastly, Polar's reputation indicates they will get the Vantage V and M to an advertised point and let's hope beyond. Those less inclined may find the watch useful, though expensive. One should really do their own research and know as much as possible about what they are getting into.
