I've had mine for 20 years or so. I think it's pretty underrated. I know the 5150 has lots of fans (and rightfully so), but the Ultra is just so versatile. Perhaps it will become a modern classic.
I bought one of these in 2000 as a private in the 82nd airborne:….the infantry barracks were spread out almost 200 meters and if put on 4 the two battalions were able to hear me playing the star spangled banner…. I hope they had to stand at attention and salute ….but I won’t know as I was wailing 😊
I have it, bought it around the same time as you together with a straight 4x12 ENGL standard. For me it's a classic that can embrace every style if you know how to tweak and play in style. I miss it though I'm happy with nowadys plugins and playing through headphones. It's been 6 years now kept in a friend's studio and I'm working far from there so I need to bring it in my car on a boat plus I'm moving from home to home every two years or so. It really stings not being able to bring it with me. I need to do something.
This is one of the first serious amps I bought as a teenager. I think 1998? I’ve had a bunch over the years, and I always wanted another one, a really clean one to keep. It has a meaner growl than the others.
@@derrickvoricci7529 I just compare the sound to amps like VHT Pitbull, Bogner xtc or Randall, Fortin and I think that for the price, specs and sound is just unbeatable. Only thing is it doesn’t look as pretty but I never cared tbh.
Facts! It seems like using a bbe with the ultra plus is kind of a little secret between people that have the amp. I found this thing called the amp tweaker defizzerator. It's passive and helps cut back on fizz, especially when playing on high gain. Unfortunately they're hard to find anymore. James brown owned the company, yes the same guy that did the 5150, and ultra plus. He sold the company a few years back tho.
@@Wh33lsofFortune a bbe with a boss sd1 and 10 band eq turns these amps into a monster. I use those pedals in front of my peavey 3120 with stock el34 tubes and have a tone similar to this in standard e tuning

I modded my ValveKing 100 watt head recently. Did the “Mesa Mod”, the “R100” mod, and slightly modified the first coupling capacitor. The amp sounds pretty similar to the Ultra when you perform those mods. Pretty similar... but man. I love the sound of the Ultra+ 120! A bit more aggressive sounding for sure.
I've only owned combination amps but I just bought a nice orange 212 cab and the Peavey ultra head is the one I got with it. It looks like I got the right one.!! 🎸💪👍
Man, I had one of these back in 1997 or so and it was my main amp through a few bands and ultimately sold it because “life” ya know.. Missed it every since, but I always swore it was better than the 5150 although all my contemporaries were playing those, or Mesa’s. I thought it was just more versatile, and for drop C tuning it was just an f’n monster. I paid $1,300 for the half stack back then, now that head fetches $1000+ in my area.
Maybe I should get a peavy. I’m chasing that late 90s sound I can’t get properly with a GT1000. Doesn’t sound quite right. I just want fat tube dist with chainsaw sound.
I had a 120+ head.... instant seller's remorse when I sold it. Was downsizing but still miss it. I have a Splawn Street Rod with matching cab now. I see you've got Splawns there, how do they compare to the 120+? Love my Street Rod but wondering how they compare.
@@derrickvoricci7529 Definitely gotta track one down. Mine had some Jan Phillips 5881’s in the power amp section. And then I had a spare set of 12ax7’s that were out of a VTM 60. That combination kicks so much ass, for tone. I haven’t did anything else to it.
@@derrickvoricci7529 Yeah, they’re harder to find then a Ultra 60 is, but definitely a very cool Peavey High Gain amplifier. With 3 channels, and reverb.
The XXX Came from the ultra series...(after), and is based off of the Rock Master preamp. There’s a few circuit changes from the original ultra series to this plus series. But overall sounds very similar, and very similar to the XXX. it is essentially a slight variation of the Rock Master preamp paired with a power amp. It was the predecessor to the Peavey Triple XXX The Ultra+, XXX, Rockmaster Preamp, JSX, etc.... all have a "coring circuit"
I know the amp will be 60 watts if I pull two power tubes but will the 1/2 power switch still work to drop it to 30 watts? I know, this is probably a stupid question but I just want to make sure.
Nice! I have this amp, I love it and I don't think I'll sell it either. The quesiton I have is this, when you switch channel, do you have that ''dead spot'' where there's a little fade out/fade in? It's the only thing I don't like about that amp. I researched and it seems I'm not the only one who has that problem.
You know, I’ve had a few in the past that had a lull or dead spot in the channel switching. Sometimes even a way too audible switch. This one doesn’t have that issue. I wonder if it’s a foot switch issue. I’ve been using an aftermarket switch on this one, no issues. I could always send you this foot switch that I’m using to see if it remedies the issue. I have others.
I mod and repair amps. Peavey, in their channel switching, have what's called a clamp circuit. They use a J-FET to mute the channels when they switch to eliminate the loud POP that accompanies the switch of the channel. Your FET or the surrounding circuitry could be going bad. Just sayin.
That was not a joke. It really did kick that head in the ass. I also had the cap filters to the voltage plate Upgraded. I'm running GT 6l6 chp Black plate power tubes. And a 30 Watt celestion cab 4x12
i'd trust any demo where the person showing it off plays autopsy riffs. sounds great!
I have only ever bought guitar gear on the recommendation of this guy. He knows what he’s talking about.

Both great amps. The ultra plus has always been my favorite Peavey.
Peavey has made great products since forever.. I was younger maybe 7 years old in 1974... my cousins band played Peavey tube amps.
I used one of these in a brutal metal band I played for bout 20 years ago. I loved this amp!
