Aida was the first opera I ever saw. In Liverpool in the 70s. I was just a kid and my mum took me to see it. I was spellbound, amazed at all the people, costumes and the parade. I cried at the end when they were shut in the pyramid and thus began my lifelong love of opera. I must admit, from the clips I've seen of this version, I don't understand it! What the heck are all the puppets about? The singing, however. Wow! The singing. Fantastic. ❤
I dont remember how many times I have heard "Aida" and seen this opera on stages! Every time I can see and hear something new for me! Verdis music is so rich with emotians!
If you think this sounds good on RUclips and, perhaps, a mobile device, you should try listening to it from this cd recording in Stereo or surround sound. My God! It's so beautiful and magnificent. I am completely blown away by it. All the singers are exquisite - as you can surely tell even by this clip. Jonas Kaufmann is marvellous- that diminuendo in Celeste Aida is something that very, very few other tenors have been able to do as far as I can tell, despite the annotation of it in Verdi's score. Anja Harteros is so wonderful as Aida. Her voice is exquisite and has great emotional expression in it, just like Jonas Kaufmann's. They are so well suited singing together. Ludovic Tezier is terrific as Aida's dad! He's another singer who is capable of bringing emotions into his voice. What a gorgeous baritone he is. All of the soloists are well suited to their roles and the chorus are outstanding. Bravo, bravo, bravo Antonio Pappano and the Ochestra of St. Cecelia for this spectacular recording Oh I can't recommend this fantastic recording enough and, despite the rude comment below, there was not a hint of Bocelli in the whole opera!
I was just yesterday in Santa Cecilia il concerto Richard strauss was cancelled but we had maestro Pappano, the musicians and choir di Santa Cecilia . Pappano kept Capriccio lintermezzo and Tyl Uylenspiegel full of colors.pour les Francais present, superbes extraits d' Aida
FABULOUS! FANTASTIC! With big "F"s. Mixing together enormous power and fragile intimacy is nothing else but an almost mission impossible, a huge challenge which they all achieved in a remarkable manner. Many thanks to the entire production. FABULEUX! FANTASTIQUE!
This looks like a good recording. My only complaint is that the soprano singing the priestess didn’t get any screentime in the documentary. She sounds like she could sing Aida too.
!mrdunn brucvald many opera singers do this when recording or rehearsing. We never can hear ourself like we sound from outside, with the hand on the ear we get a better impression of this and control better what we are doing.
Granted that the works of Verdi is a genre unto itself and is generally not included in the bel canto bracket, it is still of vital significance that the main protagonists of his operas be taken by singers with an Italian approach, and who are steeped in the bel canto tradition as if to the manor born. Not that the role of Aida and her lover, Radames are exclusively the domain of Italians. Bjorling, a Swedish, is a great Captain of the Egyptian army. He is also great as Manrico, Duke of Mantua and Riccardo (Bello). Leontyne price, an African-American, is sublime as the Ethiopian princess/slave. She is also tremendous as the two Leonoras (Trovatore and Forza). These two non-Italian singers succeeded not because of birthright, but because they trod the Italian repertoire with an deep-seated Italian approach and profound understanding of bel canto. And how about "La Divina", a Greek, who turns Italian opera into a greater art form than it probably is. How? By being the greatest exponent of bel canto.
&another diss by the so - called -experts...oh my godness...let people enjoy the music...we`re not deaf nor stupid...just able to love & listen...we`re not anymore in the last century...
The vocal production is as throaty as it's guttural, with distinctive register breaks. Notes off the stave are squeezed out without any build-up and in many sequence smudged. Legato is as abundant as rainfall in Sahara. Stylistically, he's all over the place in addition to the fact that he is channeling his inner Renee Fleming in that every word, every sentence is fussed and tweaked to the extent that any sense of spontaneity is lost. Those comparison to the legendary Jon Vickers by certain so-called critics is simply preposterous. The Canadian's voice is naturally produced and is employed with the greatest artistry, whereas the voice of "the most gorgeous thing on the lyric stage today" (so claimed by thousands and thousands of queens around the globe) is weirdly produced, sounding synthetic and grating.
To even say that both singers are completely out of their element is an understatement. This is an Italian opera, as such, it should be sung by singers with an Italian approach, particularly the two principal roles. Only when the opera is sung in a German translation can the two principal roles be essayed by singers of Teutonic and Scandinavia heritage. What's more detrimental is that not only were these two faux Radames and Aida deadly unidiomatic but also didn't have a clue as to what constitute bel canto.
Like it... but is not always wel balanced. Tenor, soprano, mezzo are great, superd. Bas and bariton they has not a great voice, "grande voce". But they arevery convincing.
Bad, the voices are weak, inexpressive, tenor screams, only Semyonchuk sounds good, a rather dense sound. The orchestra rumbles, as if Wagner, and not Verdi play.

Just bought the CD because of this.😅
Este Aida es bastante pero bastante exótico.....
Why do the men stand with the right hand to their ear and the left hand holding onto the right upper arm??
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
🎼👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹
Why is Kaufmann holding his hand to his ear when he sings? The point?
He sounds wonderful, too.......

+mannail888 Ah, if only you could get rid of 'edited', then you wouldn't look such a bellend or should I say 'belland' :D Such fun!!

Sorry, Erwin Schrott.

How to fake it with a bunch of 'bull...'.
I didn't even know that "Radames" is a baritone part. unpleasant, horrific!!!!
+belcantist You probably never listened Bergonzi and Del Monaco in this part !

Kaufmann is a disaster, as always. How ugly that Il ciel dei nostri amori not being able to sing an i on the high A
Exciting sound, but painful to watch.
Not a bad recording! In live Harteros and Kaufmann sound much worse
