To me, it's interesting to know that a cruise ship (still in working order) will most likely be scrapped after it lived out it 25 year life span. But an 80+ year old cargo ship that's been rusting away in a harbor, they decide to refurbish and bring back to life. I'm glad they're giving this old ship a second chance, but it seems wasteful that cruise ships that are slightly obsolete get destroyed.
Cruise ships cost a fortune to keep maintained. This old vessel has a tiny overhead in comparison. The systems on this vessel are few and simple. If a cruise ship has a mechanical failure, it's a public relations disaster for the shipping line, and old equipment gets unreliable. Lastly, this vessel doesn't require the public to find it 'in fashion'. So, the odds are stacked against a cruise ship, at least in comparison. There are a very few elderly cruise ships that have had longer lives - though Covid has done for most of them (Marco Polo comes to mind). The only one I can think of off the top of my head that might survive is MV Astoria (ex. Stockholm - yeah that one), which has recently changed hands into a corporation that want to continue to run her.

"That work looks not really professionel. Did they really weld some plates under the hull? I mean the hole thing is so corroded it breaks appart in its first big waves. Would have been better to break it down." Spieken Ze Deutch? Ha! It only sails in good weather! And the hull has thick plate. Never gets sent out in b/s weather. Plus they sealed the bottom with water resistant epoxy! lol.
She is still afloat after lately crossing the north sea a couple times, and she has been back and forth around the southwestern coast of Norway. Her history is not over. Laid up and mothballed, prepared for restauration, still awaiting her destiny.

A few thinned hull plates is normal on a ship that old, they cleaned the hull, cut away the corroded steel and replaced it with new steel patches, like they do every other vessel that has been sitting for a while and gave the ship a new coat of paint and abated nearly all the external rust
What a beautiful cargo ship.
Congratulation for restoring this wonderfull piece of history.
I woud love one day to visit her.
Jeg seilte ombord på Hamen i fra 75_.Var kombinert Matros og Arbeidsleder. Har mange minner. Spesiell båt, skjedde mye.

We must preserve our history and heritage !!!!
We are now 8 years later... how does she look now ?
The time when Hamen was built, sips was made to last. Especially when all the Hull was riveted.

Looks like they took her out of dry dock a little too soon. They hadn't finished painting her bottom.

12 valve Cummins
The steam engine was replaced by a 1200 bhp 9-cylindre 232.8 litre Wichmann 9ACAT Turbo diesel engine in 1962-63...

I hope the T.S. Duke of Lancaster gets this treatment!
Очень странный ремонт... Я один так думаю? Или корабль отправили потом на ещё одну верфь?

Little money spent, just to keep her safe and afloat.

What is the significance of this rust bucket?
Are you British ??
One of the last still existing boats which were built on the Wear.
@@TheStefanskoglund1 The name doesn't come up on the registry of ships built on the River Wear.
It is a pompey boat. Built for portsmouth power authority
Pompey power from 1949

What song was in that video?
Check the info box: Brahms symphony no.4 something.
I live in Goole. East Yorkshire. I have seen the Hamen, many times taking cargoes of coal and coke to Norway, from the port of Goole.
toch mooi dat men er gelooft dat het schip gered kan worden.
succes .
Hva skjer med Hamen? Hørte noe negative omtaler for en tid siden.
hele skipet ble restaurert, noe som er bra for det

Kind of a crappy paint job
Yes, but is just a sealer coat after the initial clean up....
