You only need to put flux on the pads and not smear (dry fluxless) solder all over them. This method will just damage the pads and prevent the connector from laying flat. This is probably also why you struggled getting the connector straight.
The best way to do this is to first put flux on all the pads, including the larger pads on the side. Next, place your connector on the board. You then clean your soldering iron and put some solder on it and let the flux boil off. You already have flux on the board and connector pins, so no need to worry about "dry" solder on your soldering iron. While holding the connector in place, quickly tap one of the larger ends tabs with your soldering iron. The flux on the pin will pull the solder in between the pin and the PCB pad. Just do one pad and adjust the connector if needed. Then repeat the process with the other pad. You can then add some more solder to your iron's tip and drag it over the row of connector pins. Ideally, you should keep your soldering iron's tip closer to the ends of the connector pins and let the flux suck the solder in. Adjust the speed that you move the iron depending on the iron temperature, tip, pad and connection size and how fast the solder is sucked in. No need to put a lot of solder on the pins, just wet them and they will "sweat" the pins to the PCB. Add some more flux to the board if you need to rework your soldering connections.
If you applied too much solder and some connections are bridged, clean your soldering iron tip and put some more flux on the affected pins. Then quickly touch the pins with your iron to "pull" some solder off the board. You can repeat this more than once but don't let the board or connector overheat. When you are done, all connections must be shiny and without solder blobs. Practice, practice, practice... Good luck.
