  • Hey guys!
    So I mentioned a few months ago that protective styles can be the DEVIL! I've have a few requests to elaborate so here it is. The key idea is to not forget about your real hair. This is what works for me but if you have any other tips/tricks, please share them below so that we can all benefit from them.
    I have planning on doing protectives styles this winter so this video is a great start to this series!
    Talk to you all soon!

    protective styles are my everything. I can keep my hair in braids/plaits for 1-3 months without breakage. I wash my hair, deep condition and moisturize it. My hair strives when I leave it alone. great video and you do really look nice

    You are doing it allllllll wrong if it's not growing. I have been doing protective styles literally forever(I am not kidding.) My mom used to send us to braiders when I was a kid...now I can do my hair
    1. the edges thing is an issue. I usually tell the braider to loosen up in the front. Believe it or not when I do my hair it is always too tight.
    2. don't pull it back often.
    3. The take down process is the key part to pay attention to. I take down each braid and make sure I break apart the matted area with my fingers(DO NOT COMB) by adding a little conditioner and water (spray bottle). After take-down, THEN ADD CONDITIONER to your whole head. I use V05 because that is cheap and I usually use almost the entire bottle(I have a lot of hair). The conditioner will help you detangle, I have found this is key to my detangling woes. If you do this, it doesn't matter matter how long you decide to leave your hair in.

      My mom actually braids for a living and she believes in everything you just listed. I have had my hair in braids and twists on and off for seven years now and it has been my holy grail. I never get tiny braids because of the breakage and the takedown process. But as someone who has slow growing hair, I find that protective styling is truly what repairs and thickens my thin and fragile hair. As an added bonus, I don't have to deal with my hair on a weekly basis: a great thing for a high school student as myself.

      +Tabita Gnagniko I agree 100%. For my hair, the most important thing is making sure that my scalp is clean and moisturized. I was every 2 weeks while my hair is in braids and don't get them too small. But they are always tight! As long as you deep condition you hair as soon as you take your hair out it should be fine. My hair grows and isn't dirty.

      Latisha Valentine agreed 💯 % .... I keep my braids in for 2 months moisture with my oils 3-5 x a week and when I take it out it’s SOOOOOO soft!!! And manageable 💝

      Same here i keep my braids in for 2 months. I dont wash it because i think it would unravel faster than i would like and some styles like faux loc and goddess locs are difficult to wash. Howevrr i dont have product build up because i use lite oil every few days if it needs it. My hair is really soft when i take out my braids.

    I had in micro thin twist braids in my 4c hair for 6 months. I washed my braids 3 times during the time and only oiled it twice. When I took my braids out I had a ridiculous amount of growth I couldn't believe it. Yes it was tangled but with hrs of careful detangling using my fingers, I had minimal breakage.

      Where they braided at the base and twisted the rest of the way? or twisted completely or braided completely ?

    I agree with most everything you've said except the length of time hair can be left in a long term protective style. I'm a student and I do my hair myself as I don't trust saloons. And it is usually a 2 to 3 day process, that involves me doing a henna/protein treatment, wash detangle then twisting up my hair in havana twists. There is no way I would be able to justify taking this amount of time of work every month plus it could get very expensive buying tht much attachment. I think 2 months is fine as long as u wash ur hair at least biweekly (if u can weekly) and spray ur hair and scalp with water/conditioner/oil mix nightly which is what I do. As long as you are taking good care of your hair while its in its braids or twists i think 2 months is fine especially if u remember to wrap up your hair at night to keep it looking neat. Granted these measures will be a little more difficult with a weave

      Ose Etomi Leaving a protective style for longer isn't a problem as long as you make sure to take care of your hair underneath, which it seems like you do. Trust me, I am a student too so I completely understand. As long as it works for you, that's great. I try to stay on the safe side because I have had bad experiences in the past with my hair matting up. 4 weeks makes the detangling process a lot easier for me. xx

  • @Ms.Williams84
    @Ms.Williams84 10 лет назад +37

    I think it depends on the person's hair. I can wear braids for 10-12 weeks with no problems. Others can't wear them for a week. You just have to know when it's time to take them down.

    • @JennJackson
      @JennJackson  10 лет назад +5

      DarkandChocolate Yeah, I agree. I stay on the safe side because I have had a bad experience with my hair matting badly but as long as it works for you, do it. Don't fix what's not broken. xx

    yarn braids or crochet braids really grow my hair I wash the braids every 8 days and keep the moisturize I leave them in for 6 to 8 weeks no problem with breakage I don't comb when taking down detangle with my fingers

  • @123leahm

    I notice that when I braid or twist my own hair too small, it definitely grows, but breaks when I take it down. So I decided to braid Marley hair just in the back for updoes and that annoyed me as I felt like I could not get to my scalp when I was washing. So I have decided to just do "short term protective styles" using my own hair with about 30 twists that I take frequently down and put back in. That seems to work best for me. With 30 twists, washing and conditioning is easy, detangling is easy and I can get to my scalp to do my daily massages. Thanks for the vid!

    • @vegmeout69
      @vegmeout69 9 лет назад +3

      How are you taking them down? I just started doing semi mini twists and the first time the breakage was a lot. Then the next time I sprayed my hair with some water and coconut oil. And it was so much better. Perhaps try some water and an oil of your choice. And as I took them down I twisted in the opposite direction and guided my finger down the twists.

    • @123leahm
      @123leahm 9 лет назад +4

      Wow, so much has changed since I commented on this video. I don't even remember writing it. LOL I no longer have breakage when I take my twists/braids down, even if they are mini. You are right about the oil, that really helps. What I do also is to oil my ends just about every day. THAT is the key to easy braid removal. I oil my ends and check for any balled up shed hair that may be gathering and tangling at the end of the braid or twists. If I feel any, I redo that twist. I can keep twists in for weeks, wash them several times and take them down, no problem. I also think that my hair was breaking back then due to not dusting my ends to get rid of scab hair.

    • @123leahm
      @123leahm 9 лет назад +1

      vegmeout69 p.s. thank you again for calling attention to my comment, very educational as I COMPLETELY forgot I had some breakage during this journey. How long do you usually keep your twists in?

    • @vegmeout69
      @vegmeout69 9 лет назад

      +123leahm hey there. I actually just started this journey of semi mini twists. I've done them about three times already in a month. Just because the first time I didn't like them. The second time they looked way too frizzy to be kept in longer then two weeks. This third time around is the best so far. And the second time I learned how to take the twists down better. By way of some water and coconut oil and unraveling in the opposite direction using my other hand to guide it. Takes me about an hour to take them out.

    • @vegmeout69
      @vegmeout69 9 лет назад +1

      +123leahm you know that's a good suggestion about the ends. I'm definitely going to do that because the ends get the most tangled when I take them down. I'll spritz them with a little bit of water and seal the ends with oil.

    Great tips! I just do low manipulation styles because my 4c hair is so fine that it would easily break.when I first did a big chop I called myself doing a protective style by wearing wigs over plaited hair. The friction of the wig to the scalp and plaits caused bald spots to the perimeter of my head. So, I stick to the low manipulative styles to daily moisturize my hair and to avoid any tension. Thanks for sharing.

    Protective styles are my life! Lol I braid as often as possible. My sister did micro braids for me when I went out of the country and they lasted for 2 months and my hair grew like crazy! I just sprayed water and oil daily and redid my edges and no hair loss! But the salon braiders pulled my edges out. Oil and water are my best friends with protective styles now.

    I do experience a lot of shedding but other than that protective styling helps a lot. I remember a couple years back I got box braids and kept them in for 3 months (which to me is sorta pushing it). I sprayed a mixture of conditioner and water as I took down each breads and my hair was fine. At the time I was relaxed so I had permed my hair and it looked sooooo healthy and it a grew a lot. I'm now fully natural and wearing single braids for the summer. Projective styles are my best friend..... if you do it right. Lol

  • @ForUsNaturals

    I don't think twist outs and braid outs are low manipulation styles. You manipulate your hair daily. That's just regular manipulation. If those are low manipulation then what style isn't protective or low manipulation?

    • @JennJackson
      @JennJackson  8 лет назад +19

      Personally,. I think they are low manipulation as you don't HAVE to manipulate your hair daily. Regular manipulation, in my opinion will be combing your hair daily etc.

    Protective styles of any size have always been great for me and my girls. I always co-wash weekly and moisturize daily and have had good success. Since I did it myself it's never too tight and the edges are safe because I make them larger there. Proper maintenance is the KEY to any protective styling. I personally go about 6 wks, but others I know have successfully gone 2 months!

    • @JennJackson
      @JennJackson  10 лет назад

      n2xrcise Yeah, people successfully leave them in longer. One just have to find out what works. I stay on the safer side because I have had bad experiences but it seems like you take very good care of your hair and your girls as well. xx

  • @milady112

    I definitely recommend taking care of your hair underneath. My braider always compliments me on how clean my scalp is when I go in for touch ups. I can usually keep a braided style about 3 months with a touch-up at the 6 wk. point, but I take very VERY good care of my hair while in braids. She also laughs at me because I'm so overprotective of my edges, but I have a big head so I can't play the no edges game. Good luck to you all!

    I like braids for protective styling and depending on the style I usually leave mines in up to three months. I have found various ways of washing, cleaning and conditioning my scalp. But I don't do a lot of protective styles, I'm usually a two strand girl with my own hair. One day I will get enough man power to step out of the box and try an install myself. I have always loved how you are always able to style your own hair. Thanks for the tips!

    I don't know my hair number but I do have very fine, thick but coursed hair!! I get my hair braided as if I'm getting a sew in ( braided and my ends sewed into my own hair) then wear different wigs! I keep it for about 3 months!!! I only wash it 2 to 3 times! I keep it moisturizer with natural oils! I kid y'all not I get about 2 to 2 1/2 inches of growth!! If I clip my ends before I get protective style, my ends are still freshly clipped when I take my hair down!! I use cpr by Motions and plat it in about 4 plats about half a day then detangle!! My hair grew from my chin to waist line hair in a year in a half!! No edge or ends problem!!

    How I care for my hair in braids (during +- 4 weeks):
    I moisturize (spritz) my scalp and the length of my hair using coconut oil:water mix (lukewarm) (1:5) every morning and every night before going to bed.
    My hair is always soft and doesn't go dry.
    I wash it once a week and restore moisture by spraying warm coconut oil (over the hair and NOT the scalp) after cleanse. The following day my hair would still be pretty okay on moisture level so I leave it alone. But the next day, I repeat the above steps.

    when I have long braids when they start to get old and the new growth start to come in I usually take the braids out around the edges to prevent from any serious breakage I also try to avoid washing my braids because u can usually form knots around the root area where the braid starts which can also lead to breakage when you tried to take them out but I at least keep my braids in for like a month and a half though

    Tbh the common protective styles have ruined my hair (weaves and single braids) but that's just because my hair personally can't take the stress. I've learned to live with the fact that adding in extensions just don't work for me. Plus it got to the point where protective styles weren't just temporary and I would use them to mask my real hair. All I do now is twist my hair with no additives. It's low maintenance and I've been getting great results but that's just me :)

    I was transitioning until 2 weeks ago ( I big chopped finally, yeey ) and I had braids done in July of this year at a salon, to avoid styling for a little bit, but the girl that did my hair braided it sooo, but sooo tight that after a few days my scalp started to show bruises and flesh started showing off... I mean, you can imagine. Disguusting !!! And the hair she used on me was soo heavy that I had a headache for 3 straight days. On the 4th day I couldn't take it anymore so I toke the braids down, and came here on youtube searching for a healthy way to do box braids without breakage and thankfully, I found a tutorial on how to box braids without the knot. So I re-did my braids myself watching the video over and over again and this time I used with a lighter type of hair and when I toke down the braids 4 weeks later, my new growth went from two fingers (horizontally positioned on the hair) to the whole 5 fingers on my hand. I was so surprised to see that much growth in such a short period of time. And during the period I had my braids on, I washed my hair every week the same way, I deep conditioned, applied an oil mix to my scalp every night and my shea butter mix after every wash to seal in the moisture from the deep conditioner and the water. Now I have braids on again after the big chop and I can't wait to see what my hair will look like when I take them down. I am loving my journey so far, and learning a loot thanks to all the natural gurus here on youtube and of course the biggest challenge is then finding out what works better for my hair. Thanks a lot jemy1415 :)

    Great video. I've had my braids in since April 2 and it's May 10. I wanna keep them in until the end of May so I moisture and treat my hair as usual doing a deep condition on wash day which is every other week. I exercise 6 days a week so I make sure to clean my braids after exercise with warm water and oil it properly. I have redone some braids where the braid was slipping and pulling so that helps me check my own hair. I'm definitely goung to use some of these tips.

    I have a sewin in my hair. The braids underneath are not tight at all I stress that to my beautician. This may stay up for a month, but I wash my hair every 2weeks still with my protective style in and moisturize.

    Everyone hair type is the same, my hair loves being in a protective style. I leave my style in for 6-8 weeks, I deep condition before and after my hair does not like plain water all the time so I refresh with a spray leave in I use an oil mixture on my scalp, am going to try the dry shampoo if I need it just to how it works

    I keep my protective style for 3-4 weeks into crochet braids. Even with a simple protective style my hair breaks easily and my scalp is really sensible. So less protective style, keep it moisturized and it will grow

    ugh, I am just lost when it comes to my hair. I have been wearing protective styles for almost two years, and I just don't think my hair is growing with them. Now I have hair that I no longer know how to care for. I don't want to say that I am ashamed of my hair I have just gotten used to protective styling ( longer and bigger hair).I have been Natural for three years and I have about the same amount of hair I had at the end of my first year. Suggestion,tips ,advice anything

    • @JennJackson
      @JennJackson  9 лет назад

      SimpleeStaci Ok, don't be frustrated. Protective styling don't work for everyone. You have to find what works for you. I recommend starting with the basics such as washing/deep conditioning and then start to incorporate other things such as protective styling to find what your hair likes/doesn't like. Go back to what you did the first year that worked. I hope that helps. x

    Great tips!!! When I want to wear a low manipulation style I wear loose two strand twists on stretched hair and if I want to protect my ends I put them in a protective style. MsKegz and mstanish1 videos on loose two strand twists really help out especially since it's getting cooler. I usually wear my twists for 3-4 weeks and they look really good. I don't add hair because I've never had hair that didn't come from scalp before and I don't really know how to and I don't trust other people with my natural thick hair. But I think it would good too. I think they will look good on anyone.

    Great video...u looked amazing btw...as far as protective styles I stick to the low manipulation styling because I don't think my scalp likes braids...I tried them 3x and all different styles and my scalp would be so dry and itchy so I said no more lol I might try a weave this winter and see how I like that *fingers crossed*

      i dont know if this will work for you, but i switched from normal braids to kinky/marley/havana braids. They are quite light and fluffy. So when I spray they hair with water/lconditioner/oil and squeeze it gets to my own hair. So when I'm taking them out they are not overly brittle

      Shannan Washington They shouldn't be offended. You want to take care of your hair right? If they feel offended let them! You want to grow long hair and you and the stylists know tight braids aren't the way. Keep telling them you don't want your braids tight girl, it will pay off in the long run.

      I have the same problem with stylists. It's like they forget that you're the one paying them... smh. And really, if they care about healthy hair and edges, they should be happy to make sure that the hair is not too tight.

    I don't like braids.. They take way too long and they snatch my edges.. I love sew ins. The longest I've protected style with a sew in was 9 months straight. I did wash and condition though. I'm not one of those people that has to wash their hair everyday/every week... Guess I'm blessed. I wash my hair once a month if that...or when it's time to remove all the products from my hair. I feel washing my hair everyday/every week or every other day would leave my hair super drier than it already is and completely stripped of its natural oils. I love co-washing. My hair doesn't produce its own oil so every little bit helps. My hair is currently in a sew in I want to leave it in for at least 4-5 months. Sew ins grows my hair like crazy. I've been incorporating the hot castor oil, scalp massage and greenhouse effect challenges a long with hair vitamins. I can't wait to see the growth.. I love the greenhouse effect! I can't wait to do the oil wash...

      Elgeta Witt
      Well, for those of us with sensitive scalps itchiness can mean a whole lot of things. My two main things was sensitivity to synthetic hair and too tight braids. I would literally get an itchy scalp an hour after getting my hair done. Tea tree oil was the only thing that helped, twice daily once in the morning and again in the evening.

      +Ose Etomi Have you tried doing an ACV rinse before you put the hair in? A lot if oriole are allergic to the chemicals they put on the hair, not the hair itself. ACV rinses strip the hair of that, puts leave synthetic hair not so shiny. I do one part ACV to 3 parts water, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, rinse and air dry. Just a thought, works for me!

    I have been braiding my hair without extension. I do approx 20 braids, I thought I was doing a protective style however my ends are not tucked in because they are not long enough to tuck. I keep them in for about 1 week the most 2. Do you consider this a protective style even though my end are not tucked? Please let me know. Thanks 😊

    • @JennJackson

      Sharon Elwekil I know that people can get VERY technical with the definition but I will say that it is. As long as you aren't styling your hair daily (i.e.. re-twisting at night for a twist out), I would consider it protective.

    • @balance-x602
      @balance-x602 8 лет назад +1

      My hair isn't 4c or 3 maybe 2c ... but protective styles are not good for me . My hair grows better free . I do moisturize daily with oil and light cream and I don't use heat . My hair is up but with a simple hair clip :)

    • @Pussinbootszzz
      @Pussinbootszzz 7 лет назад +1

      AllStar2282 i leave my crochet braids in for 2-4 weeks because I have fine natural hair and don't want my edges to give way. I spritz with water and lightly oil my roots with a grapeseed/jbco mix daily to keep moisturized.

    • @orselenadidi
      @orselenadidi 7 лет назад +1

      AllStar2282 You need to moisture your hair (and your scalp) every single day. I suggest you spray your hair every morning and every night before bed using oil:water mix (preferably lukewarm if you are low porosity). This way your hair will always be hydrated.

    • @Pussinbootszzz
      @Pussinbootszzz 7 лет назад

      ***** very good point. I've always had dry scalp so I have to oil daily. I'm extremely high porosity. But your method works also, I am sure.

    • @orselenadidi
      @orselenadidi 7 лет назад +2

      ***** Hi there. I wouldn't call it "oiling" my scalp. I focus mainly on watering my scalp. I add a bit of oil just because that way the moisture cannot escape easily.
      And also I cannot really agree with your point. I've used oils solely all my life on my body and yet my skin is still producing sebum. Sebum is oil, so how come oil stops oil from surfacing ? I'm gonna double check that anyway.
