Growing up, my best friend in middle school had a kaya doll. It was the most beautiful doll i had ever seen. She had the horse, the dog, everything! I was super jealous but also just in awe. I never had an American Girl doll growing up, but reading the books was part of my childhood. This video was great. I really liked how both sides had strong points and links to interesting theories. But at the end you really made a strong case for the positive impact of Kaya and the importance of the dolls existence. Loved it!
thanks for making this video! very well done and informative. i did want to note that nellie did also have a modern outfit as a historical character to celebrate her irish heritage… but of course that is looooong gone
Another thing to point out, the only other time that natives are mentioned is in Kirsten's story. And she's not even allowed to be friends with Singing Bird, it's so heavily forbidden, and her mother tells her not to be messing around with the "Indians". We need a true representation of a modern Native girl. World by Us or something should come out with that kind of doll.
Wow this was really amazing! Especially the shade you gave to yourself at the end. Thank you for this well researched back and forth, helped me think about this topic in a more nuanced way.
You seem very informed and educated about Kaya’s culture and concept which I neverrrr see discussed. I know it was important tot he advisors working on Kaya that her story take place pre-English contact/colonization but the implication of her supporting the concept of the “disappearing Indian” I’m just generally happy that other people care about this besides just me😭😭😭
This is fantastic! I have sad news kinda all of her beautiful outfits are sold out and probably aren't getting restocked. I am lucky to have her 3rd powwow regalia, her winter accessories, and tradings outfits. She is my 4th ag doll ever, actually.
thank you for this. as a native american who places a lot of importance on these subjects this video was done with so much care and i thank that.
omgg I always wanted Kaya! She's so beautiful💙 Thank you for making this

Love the format, the self-awareness, and the full picture you painted of the issues at hand. And citations!
