I've reached the point where I know Ben is going to hate a terrible move because I can sort of tell it's not very good. (Creates no threats, weakens the pawn structure, gives away squares, weakens the king, etc.) But then I get to hear the explanation and I really appreciate it. b5 was bad, but at least you hadn't eaten recently.

It’s funny how when people ask for their game review they rarely share the game in which they might have lost (lost games actually needs proper analysis). They will usually share one of their better wins as if that is actually representative of their level.

Ben Finegold saying "Ignore the engine, you played fine" to an 1100 rated subscriber. I don't know what to say, is this an alternate universe?

engine doesn't help you a lot if you're under 1500. you won't be able to understand most of the lines it gives. that will happen when you're stronger as well but not that often. and when you get to super gm level, it gets very rare that they come across an obtuse engine line they cannot quite comprehend. but even there it happens because some engine lines are just bonkers.

@@coosoorlog Indian players like Gukesh didn't use engines until they became GMs. The opinions of stronger players is way more likely to improve your play. The sooner people put away the engine the better IMO. I'd rather be 50% sure a move is good, and be able to determine it myself OTB, than be 100% sure and use an engine, which is no use OTB.

This is why 1100 is 1100, they make a real chore out of dispatching terrible moves. Nb5/Nxb5 just sitting on the board for 4-5 moves.

So basically Ben told the guy who submitted the game “don’t listen to that mean, nasty old computer, it doesn’t know what it’s talking about. You played a fine game son.”
