- This is a kind of prequel to my set of videos about my "romance" with Collings 12 fret (Martin" designs, and welcomes the latest addition to the family -mmy 1998 002h.
BTW _ apparently I said that the "dreadnought first emerged in 2016 ...Doh! - only a century out!"
Enjoy (I hope)
My two favorites.. 12 fret slope shoulder D 18S and 00-18V.
I'm looking to replace the 00-18v with a 12 fret 00.
I have not owned a Collings but have played a few.
My opinion is they are often superior to Martin.
Hi Jeff, I turned from Martin to Collings (of Martin Designs) because in 1996-9 I simply could not find a Martin 12 fret with a suitable fretboard width. Are Collings better than Martin ? I would not want to say that, but I'm sure that that was Bill Collings target and I'e never heard of a Collings warranty return.
@@SillyMoustache I have owned 15 Martins since 1961. Currently 2.
I have had very bad luck with 5 out of my last 8 new Martins. Two were very expensive customs order within a couple months of each other.
Both were grossly defective, I never played either. Both returned to Martin.
It took them 14 months to make a decision about what to do with them. They lost one and they destroyed the other as "unrepairable".
No more new Martins.
Having just bought the Boucher, I don't think I can afford a Collings, but I might get the hat :-)
And that was expensive too!
Hello again. These are beautiful, well balanced sweet sounding guitars. I have only had the pleasure of playing a Collins briefly once. This was a great comparison.
I have a small assortment of acoustic guitars but I typically play two of them more often than the others. These are also similar, but with Adirondack over mahogany. One is a dreadnought and one is a 00. (D-18GE and CEO 7)
Given the opportunity, I would probably have opted for adi or European spruce, but remember I've only ever bought one new Collings - I mostly buy (bought) used.
There's something about a 00. Your recently acquired Collings 00 is oustanding. The Waterloo's from Collings are cool too.
Well, I'm hooked on Collings, as I will show in my next few videos.
As much as I love them, here is a question that has nothing to do with Collings. Have you had any experience with Brook guitars built on your side of the pond? A Brook Adirondack and Rosewood, 12 fret parlor guitar, 0 to 00 size, in excellent condition, has become available over here and I know nothing about them other than it looks beautiful in the photos.
Hi Patrick, I have two friends who have Brook guitars and love them. They are not very far from us in the south, and can be ordered to your spec. I have never played them, but they sound very good. To me, they typify the British style and sound. Have a look at their website.
You have a 00 now?! Whaaatt!!! Strangely I thought the 00 sounded better with a pick than the 000, but the latter still wins for me overall with fingers. I guess you've played that one a lot more than the new addition 00 so it may change over time. Very cool and beautiful sounding trio of guitars you have there Andrew 🙂
Hi Lewis, great to hear from you, and hope all is well. I also think tat although it is 25 years old the 00 is still a little ... sleepy. I've decided to hang it up in my office for a while listening to BBC Radio 4. It might send people to sleep but it seems to wake up guitars!
Would you know it I just won a bid on the Fylde equivalent of a Martin OOO a Goodfellow today at auction. Would you mind if I send you some pictures and information via your email Andrew? I have your email address from previous letters? The guitar having no fretboard I didn’t realise had been strung for a lefty but I wanted to know if you could tell me if a luthier could adjust the bridge or saddle
Hi Andrew, I'd be happy to see your new guitar. Concerned about the left hand stringing. As to a luthier to I'll have to ask around and it kinda depends on where you are. Send medetails by Email.
@@SillyMoustache yeah just had a terrible two days trying to line the chimney after a chimney fire but yeah I really ought to have picked up on the left hand stringing but it wasn’t in the description. Anyway I’ll let you know the price I got for as I do believe that there is leverage for any work
So I can only quote from my previous guitar making shop Brook about their constant repair work on binding ect n expensive Martin guitars and that I have yet to hear anything from anyone about anyone ever even playing a bad Collings guitar such is the quality and maybe something approaching Alchemy re their work. I love the messages that presume you must be a billionaire and yet you have mentioned before that you really have bought well with perhaps the one make Collings that one could expect a good instrument
Hi, I did a calculation recently, which I've misplaced about how much I've spent on buying guitars since I started "accumulating" in about 1999. It averaged out at less than £1000 a year, not counting items sold.
@@SillyMoustache well don’t that just show then how subjective it can be? I mean a season ticket for a premier ship football ground would be twice that
Happy to see another video again. You have a collection of guitars to be proud of. Hope you have wonderful holiday season. George in Montana
Hi George, many thanks, but not thinking about Christmas just yet!
Give me that oo. A bit more crisp and clarity. ooo is wonderful as well.
No! It is improving daily, I think it was "wet" when it first arrived. The 20 year old 0002h always sounds great. Thanks for watching.
What is that brace? I have thumb joint pain. Any advise?
"Push" CMC Thumb Brace. Expensive!
The sound is stunning. I can't play dreadnoughts (too big). I have a Martin 000-15M that has become too bulky with me aging...got a goo 0 (Stanford Golden Era).
I may get an Eastman E10P. Collings are ...too expensive for me. Thanks Andy for sharing the beauty of guitars.🎶
Hi, I understand about dreads I have a good friend who has had to sell all his. I guess my time will come.
I have not encountered Sanford guitars as yet.
Eastman guitars esp. small body are truly outstanding. Thanks for watching.
Wow, that OO sounds amazing!
Hi it's getting better quite quickly. as it acclimatises to my home.
@@SillyMoustache
I can't wait to hear how it stacks up against the Eastmans. My DS2H I bought, with your very valuable assistance, has really become a special guitar. I had a very skilled, local builder borrow it to measure for a custom build.
Greetings and thank you for another great video. As a listener and player, it is interesting how our ears develop and change over time. Your comments about Collings being built with the balance in mind is very interesting and I’ve found that I am still working out my hearing of what I like the best (the balance or the bass heavy).
I’ve had rosewood b/s guitars and I find that I prefer mahogany b/s. Mahogany seems to create a tone that is warmer? Is that your experience?
Hi, In a later video, i'll show my mahogany dread (DS1) of very similar age setup, strings etc., and my EIR Ds2h. to My old ears, I think the rosewood is warmer, but EVERYTHING in a guitar affects tone so I don't think that there is an absolute answer.
Interestng. All three sound great in their own way. Initially, I couldn't hear a drastic difference with the strumming, but once you started playing fingerstyle, it became quite apparent. I think the OOO has the best balance, bass to treble. Also, I loved how it kept ringing even as you were putting back on the stand. That guitar just wants to sing!
Yes, it does. it has probably had more use that the others too, over 20 years. Thanks for watching.
Hi, what a coincidence! I took delivery of a Collings 00 yesterday 23 Nov. Stunning guitar (my first Collings). I also have a Goodall OM and a Eastman E20p both of which I love. I'm massively impressed with the Collings which is absolutely a keeper and I've always been impressed with the Eastman especially now i can make direct comparisons with the Collings at 3 times the price! Very happy camper at the moment and really enjoying your videos! Happy new guitar by the way!!
002h built in 2017, in basically new condition, just FYI.
Very cool!
Really liked the sound of the 12 fretter. Will be watching for one in the Future for my collection.
Hi Stephen, all my flat tops are 12 fretters. I'll be telling the stories of my guitars in upcoming videos. Thanks for watching.
May I ask why you stick with Sitka instead of red spruce?
James, I'm in the UK. There are relatively few Collings in the UK and I don't buy new. When a Collings appears on Ebay I jumped. I have one Collings dread with Adi.Pretty rare here.
