Thank you Darren. I just wrote the following comment on Stefan's updated video for this great tool. His version 1.2 release provides boatloads more functionality, but what you present here is a game changer. "I bought this software - using the code that Darren had on his excellent video - just a couple hours ago. And wow! I think my hairline will finally get a chance to recover as this makes conforming shots so easy. So I no longer have to spend wasted days pulling my hair out. This new version 1.2 is far more useful and exciting than the one he shows in his video. But even that would would have been a game changer. I love the method of shared nodes showed in this video, which basically gives you a switch that can be used anywhere. I love the split screens, the exposure heatmap, and the saturation monitor. All in a simple interface. Again, I've only had it for a few hours but I have already saved myself days of struggling. Thank you Stefan! You have singlehandedly removed 90% of the guesswork of color correcting!"
Aww, so pleased that you have enjoyed using Stefans Utility tool. It is so good!! 1.2 update is FANTASTIC!
I wish something like this existed for Final Cut. Does anyone know of a standard LUT that shows skin tone this way without DCTL?
The Utility DCTL pack now includes LUTs for Final Cut, Premiere, Photoshop users. All Infos on my website.
This tool looks DOPE. Seems perfect for grading RUclips videos in a timely manner. Might have to cop.
Hi Darren, thanks so much for highlighting this tool! What a fantastic find, and a bargain too. Installed it straight away - no more masking round faces, hands etc to sample the colour; wonderful! Cheers
Its ridiculous how simple it is right!
Darren Mostyn, is a big gift for all of us. I've learned so much from him and all that in a such short time. No colorist is teaching like you're doing it.Thanks for all the info.
Thanks, Appreciated.
I've been putting off buying this tool because I'm a nerd and like to learn things for myself before I use any kind of helpers.....I got so sick of skin tones I broke down and bought it today and I feel like an idiot for wasting so much time trying to get my skin tones right without it. Thanks for doing this video
Ive been grading professionally for 18 years and I love it!
I'm new to davinci and I wanted to say thank you to you Darren for not doing 4hr videos on learning, but keeping it into bite size chunks with no nonsense.
So far the videos I have watched you do are super useful and enjoyable to watch. More so when you were the one that actually did the colour no the video here with Adam that i had watched previously. Really cool to see you work this sort of real content and share it. I'm sure you have a LOT under your belt already after 18 years.
Thank you Darren, good channel and good watching you.
thanks. Adam and his team are a pleasure to work with.
I’ve been using this tool for about 3 months and it’s been a game changer for me, as white balance, especially with skin tones, always does my head in. When I get the skin all yellow or as close to yellow as possible - perfect yellow is impossible in mixed lighting - I quickly scroll through the clip to ensure skin tones are optimal throughout.
For ease and convenience, I use the exposure heat map as well. I set up separate nodes for checking skin tones and exposure.
only used for this job s far - looking forward to using it more.
Thanks master again. You are awesome as always. Another useful tool! Cheers
this really is a great tool! you are welcome
Oh my goodness, what an excellent time saver, thank you Stefan and Darren. So quick and easy to use!
I can’t wait for this to start. You can never learn enough about how to get good skin tones.
Thank you for this.. I immediately went to check on my last project. Most clips were good, and some was way off, and you can see problematic ones from hole project in few seconds... I love it, best 50€ ever spent :)
Glad you agree - Its certainly a staple part of my workflow now.
I started with his "Color Shift" DCTL after seeing your video on it. I got results I've never been able to achieve. I "cried once" and bought it.
Curious to see what else his other DCTLs could do after being so impressed, I played with this one to try to fix a challenging skin tone situation in a multicam shoot. I got it to a great place easily, but the shadows still had magenta. I tried the demo of "Hue Twist" and easily got the shadows to be perfect. I was sold.
The DCTLs are a bit on the expensive side, but I'm so happy to have them in my power nodes ready to be enabled when needed.
Glad you are seeing quality results. These are game changing DCTLs!!
This is an awesome tool indeed, speeds up the skin neutral work for sure. Definitely adds to the confidence of actually utilizing it on our projects when Darren is recommending, thank you for the pro tip !
Hi Darren, i'm following your tutorials for a very long time and i'm always very very surprised how you are able to manage those tutorials : explaining some complex things with very few and simple words. You're damn good to make those things clear and accessible, even for a french ! When i look at your videos, i know i wont enter into Bermudes's Triangle but on something which a has been polished and cleaned to be very understable for everyone. Hats off and Bravo as we say in French !
Merci! Appreciated!
Thanks for this Darren, definitely a great addition to Resolve. Have a fabulous Christmas!
Happy holidays to you too!
I discovered this tool a few months ago and strongly agree with Darren that it’s a game changer. At the time I was grading a documentary scene with mixed light sources. With the Balance dctl I was able to navigate this messy situation with greater confidence and control. For a few shots where the face highlights were magenta and the shadows were green, I used the Mononodes Hue Twist dctl to spread the yellow further into those areas. Thank you Stephan for making dctls that make the grade go faster, and thank you, Darren, for your great videos.
thanks for sharing that! I love it so far on my first job.
Saaame. I had a challenging color situation. I used the free version of Balance to fix skin tone, and had too much magenta in shadows, so also used the free version of Hue Twist to get perfect skin tones. Needless to say I had to buy both, they make it so easy to fix color issues it's a no brainer.
Hate how much I've spent, but love having most of his DCTLs in nodes ready to make life simpler.
That's actually really clever! having this lut in camera could be very useful when not shooting raw!
Hi Darren, we just switched from Premiere to Resolve and are still getting the hang of it, but discovering your channel has been a huge boost and in particular we just wanted to say thanks for this DCTL recommendation. It's been worth every penny and has taken so much guesswork out of our colour correction when it comes to skin tones.
Trawling through your older videos, are we right in thinking that at some point recently you switched from a CST workflow to a Davinci Colour Managed one? The course we used to get started (Matt Johnson's Resolve course) recommends colour managed, so I wondered if you do too, these days?
Thanks so much for all the incredible tips and tuts - even the terrifying node trees!!
Nice tool ! Thanks Darren and of course thanks to Stefan for developing the tool.
I prefer to work in Davinci YRGB Color Managed with the timeline color space Davinci WG/Intermediate so I made a compound node in the timeline-grade (CST input timeline color space & gamma to Rec 709 > DCTL skintone > CST Rec 709 to timeline color space & gamma output). In this way it's easy to toggle on/off and to use it with other final output color spaces.
thanks for sharing! Glad you like the tool.
Oh boy, that tool is superb, I took some scrap footage i shot a couple of years ago and was able to balance all the shots and get lovely skin tones. Definately not the most excitting footage but everyone looks good and the lighting is about 1000% better than when it was shot. This is going to be a must use tool in every project i do.
its a simple and fantastic tool that works!
Been binging on your channel lately. Thanks for all the great content!
Wow! Great tool, thanks for the quick intro to it. Was just doing a grade and slaving over the skin tones, this looks like it will definitely save some time and energy. Cheers, Darren and have a great holiday!
works in DWG, but you need REC709 really for accuracy as it is measuring the wider space otherwise.
@@DarrenMostyn Literally just got to you saying that in the video 🤣 Thanks again!
Wow, unbelievable upload. Thank you! So much great info.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Crazy good stuff! Worth buying indeed. I used the vector scopes but this just makes things way easier. Thanks a lot, Darren!
I’ve been using this tool since it came out 3 months ago & it’s been a game changer & it has saved me so much time! 🥰👍🤗🙏
I wish Id known 3 months ago! Its indeed a game changer!
I bought this a few weeks ago and I cant stop using it. Totally worth while investment.
Bought it. !!!! Cant wait to throw in a nice reference footage, put the tools into timeline node and match what I like about it!
Saw this when Stefan introduced it and thought it would be great. Thanks for the reminder about it. take care.
I really enjoyed using it on this job. I can't believe I didn't know about it!
What a great tool! Just tried it out. Super easy and helpful. Thank you for telling us about it!
I use this same DCTL at the timeline level and make it a shared node. Then I copy and paste the shared node into my node graphs at clip level. That way I can turn it off and on without leaving the clip node graph. Sharing timeline nodes to clips blew me away when I heard you could do that, and this utility is the perfect candidate for that trick. I'm currently grading food spots for broadcast that use a pure white background. "Neutrals to Green" within MONO-Balance let's me quickly check (and prove to creatives) that the white background is actually neutral.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing
Our pleasure mate! Thanks again 🙏👊
Thanks Josh! Your grandad in my thumbnail is doing well! This is one of my fastest videos to date!
haha it is quite alarming to look at lol
@@DarrenMostyn
Thanks Darren. That's a very interesting and useful utility.
Cheers Ray!
Ah, Mr. Beard! Love it.
great video, i have been using the two tools from Stephan for the last few months. I got to get to sep up the DCTL on my Elgato
Amazing tool. Thanks for finding and sharing.
Fantastic, Darren. I'm working on a TV show so I bought it and started using it. You're right: makes it so easy. Thank you!
This was a HYGE help! I was just about to release a big interview project and I tried a new grade with this technique and my God what a difference. It's funny how you think you've nailed skin tones and then you see them correct, and you're like 'dang....he was so blue before.....' Thanks Darren. I think I have depicted you are from Brighton. That is my home town. Love to connect next time I'm there. I'm in Upstate NY right now.
Yes Im in Brighton (UK). Say hi if you are in town.
Plz make a detailed tutorial on Omniscope ofx about false color and your personalized scope setup.
Man, Darren, this is SO helpful!
Great video!! Thanks. Does this work for non European skin - Asian / African?
of course.
Thanks Darren, just purchased from Stefan. Can't wait to try these out...
And? Result?
@@RazeN_Gaming Very effective tools to have. Simple to use and speeds up your workflow. Takes the guesswork out...
Thx so much! You always have such good tips and tricks that are worth their money👍👍👍
Here we go again 😊 exited!!
Thank you very much! Extremely helpful!
Hi Darren, love the channel! Have you done a video about split toning i.e. how to do the teal and orange look while preserving the blacks? If so, which one is it? Thanks!
Hi Darren...one question: does this DCTL program work with both studio and free versions of DaVinci Resolve?
DCTL's not supported in free version so you will need the STUDIO version. Thanks
Thanks Darren! Great tips as always!
That tool will be a game changer for me; now I won’t need to guess if I skin tones are correct. I will know if they are right.
Amazing Darren! Thank you
thanks Danny
Thanks Darren, Happy Christmas to you and your nearest and dearest
Thanks Martin! And to you my friend.
How are you still seeing the grade when you use a power window? When I'm using node based management, whenever I use a power window, the image reverts back to PRE input transform.
The only workaround I've found is : add a serial after input cst with a single parallel, in one I create a power window over the portion I want to view in scopes, invert the mask, take the offset to 0. Then in the other parallel I can work on the transformed image whilst also seeing it's effect in the scopes.
Whoa! Really handy tool!
Happy New Year Darren, Long time fan, first time commenter. Mid/Late Last year I made the switch to DR (Why the F did I wait?) I watched all your videos back in 2021 and remembered about your channel the other week and re-watched some and caught up on some more, I must say I have learned alot more tips and tricks so thank you for that! There is earen some golden nuggets in the "Beginners" guides!
I use cst but I have been using the Gamut mapping in the final cst to Compress the sats on sat clipping, what I would like to know from a full time colourist is the pros and cons of such feature.
Thanks
Hi, HNY and thank you. Its not easy to answer here TBH. I use it on a scene by scene basis. Generally its pretty reliable to have on but im opening a large thread here - post it on facebook forums for more detailed 'pros and cons'. i have no problem using it in general. Hope that helps. Darren.
Brilliant. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Wowza!
enjoy!
Wow Darren, I watched your video and was impressed.. then I tried it for myself and it blew my mind. Easily one of the best tools I've acquired. Thanks for putting us onto this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome tip! Thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent! I got it!
May I ask? Where did you normally do skin tone adjustment? And another question I really want to know is, when you do all color balance perfect skin tone and you put lut on it, is skin tone still good?
Thank you very much and happy new year.
grade under the lut to get skin tone perfect!
Thank you very much@@DarrenMostyn
Stefan is a hero 🙌
Hey Darren! I hope you're doing amazing! I have a quick question:
My computer doesn't have Thunderbolt 3 but allows me to output 4K signal, and I'm looking to clean my colour feed coming from DaVinci Resolve to my 4K monitor :
- Does the "Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G" help me to clean my colour feed from my GPU HDMI computer 4K output to my 4K monitor?
Thanks in advance !
Great content Darren! Does the skin tone correction node go before or after a CST node? Thanks!
you need to watch my CST videos to understand this better.ruclips.net/video/CtSBVKmHkjU/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Hi Darren, can the skintone indicator be adjusted for different skin colours?
awesome tool. gonna get that right away.
Darren this is a nice video once again and the tool looks super handy :) I am also wondering how you got that grade so crazy balanced from such a warm starting point. Such a clean look. Would looooove a tutorial on this clean look. I need more of your tricks ❤ thank you so much for all your content I'm learning so much
I teach all these techniques and more when you join my masterclass - coming may! All things get deeper!! subscribe to the free email list in the decription to get details when they are available.
I am looking forward to that. Def purchasing it@@DarrenMostyn
Interesting utility. I’ll have to check it out. I wondered if it wasn’t Rec 709, though. A bit disappointing as I always work on everything in DWGRGB, so a bit of a workaround. As an early beta tester on Resolve I begged them for the skin tone (I line) and they put it in. I had always worked with big, hot scopes in an equipment rack. Remember those days and the I Line was the skin line. A little off topic but I’ve asked the BMD and the developers why the qualifier is so broad with the eye dropper in DWGRGB. There is so much work after a selection as a small click selects the whole world. This needs to be constrained.
Is the skin tone target the same for a low key look versus a high key look? Initial logic suggests the targets would be different?
Its just a guide. Consistency is what is important. This tool will help you keep that if you want cooler or warmer skin tones too.,
Great tip on the mono-nodes Utility pack - Not cheap but definitely worth it for me at least. Would love you to demo how the other components of the utility pack are used as I suspect they will also save me several hours
more coming soon
Thoughts on Dehancer? I know you use it for Bloom and Halation, do you use any of the other tools in it?
I did purchase the Mononodes, and I found that adjusting the skin tone with the offset would also affect the background colors. So I started using the Curves with Hue vs Hue and Hue Vs Sat which isolated the adjustments using the qualifier with the curves. Would you use a mask and tracking or any other approach if you were having the background colors shift while using the offset and Mononodes.
Amazing tool! Davinci could have this natively but good to have some margins for third party utilities
Hey Darren ia it ideal to use HSV together with Bleach Bypass? Im just curious on what's your take on this. Im just a newbie hope you will notice this. Thank you!😊
Fantastic video again! In my last project I also tried the "mask and highlight" trick with the skin tone indicator but somehow in the highlight mode Davinci decides to bypass EVERY other node and will show flat log colours in the tiny "face selecting" mask I created. Therefore my vectorscope also shows complete nonsense of course. Do you happen to know what causes this? I couldn't find any hint for it myself.
Mine does this also and I’m curious about the solution.
It is correct behaviour. The highlight tool isolates the node so the csts are not active in that highlight mode.
It appears, we need to use a node after every adjustment and second cst node. That will work. After adjusting the skin tone in highlight mode in that last node, you could erase the mask and shift the node forward in your node tree. Take a closer look at where his highlight node is at 4:00 @@colorboxbrett
Bought a tool didn’t know how to properly use it even though I watched the 20 mins tutorial from developer still didn’t make since until I came across your video. Nice work 👍
Glad I could help!
Actually i like those DCTLs, i already found some free DCTL and using them for my projects for a long time. But those are very limited. That skintone indicator can save lots of time and avoid unnecessary revisions
its so simple its crazy!
Hello,
I am a new subscriber, and I would like to know if someone could point me in the right direction in this channel.
I finished watching the Resolve mini Panel, Darren said that the Resolve speed editor is a great complement to the mini panel.
Honestly, how does the resolve editor keyboard compare to the speed editor, and is the editor keyboard a better choice for the mini panel? I'm just asking, but i really would like to know before I start purchasing equipment.
Thank you in advance.
This is HUGE!!
Its a good one for sure
Great as always
this tool is great, thanks for the video
“Clip is pre timeline” i guessed that from how you were working but that helps to make that clear.
correct. Clip is processed before timeline
Thanks Darren! If you work with CSTs and put one CST IN at the beginning and a CST > 709 at the end, at which point do nodes on "Timeline" start to work? After all nodes on "Clip" are done?
Keep up these great value videos!!
correct - Timeline is after clips.
10:20
Thanks Darren - I've got a question - I noticed you use a Wacom creative pen tablet. So I got a Wacom Intuso Pro ( Medium). I also use a DR speed editor. However, I can't use both. I use DR 18.6 with current update and both devices are updated. Did you run into the same issues. DR currently has no solutions.
I dont use wacom anymore. There support is terrible. I switched to Xencelabs about 6 months ago after 15 years or so on Wacoms. I Love it.
Ah... okay thanks for update@@DarrenMostyn
I use a 360 camera to shoot videos of dogs in motion at their level. I've been overlaying a grid and keyframing to keep them scaled and centered when reframed. If I could use the Planar Tracker instead of keyframing practically one frame at a time, my workload would be greatly reduced. However, when I put Tracker points on the 360 MediaIn node they also show up on the reframe node and as soon as a dog leaves that frame, it stops tracking. I've tried both KartaVR and Reframe360 with the same dismal results.
I also walk around with my Insta360 X3 on a pole, and though the stabilization is terrific, there is some bobbing around that should be able to be fixed with tracking in the 360 MediaIn node.
Would you please make a video about tracking in 360. Every tutorial about tracking that I've seen deals only with standard frames.
Darren, does it work for darker skin tones?
yes of course - would be a useless tool otherwise!
Would your tools also work for deeper/darker skin tones as well? Would we still follow the "yellow" rule?
Yes, our tool works effectively for all skin tones, including deeper and darker ones, similar to the skin tone indicator in DaVinci Resolve. For darker skin tones the principle of aligning to the skin tone line remains the same. We have a free demo available on our website along with examples featuring darker skin tones. So feel free to test it yourself.
Great video. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
thank u so much darren
Hello, I would like to ask if it is possible to specify the color of a product in Davinci Resolve? I have color replacement in PR that can achieve accurate color replacement, but it seems that Da Vinci can only roughly replace colors. Does Davinci Resolve have accurate color replacement function? It is used for color confirmation between products and physical objects.
colour compressor in the effects is going to help. You can specify an RGB value for example - you'd have to key area first, this is not ideal
@@DarrenMostyn
Thank you for your reply, I tried it and the effect was not ideal,So there is no solution in Davinci Resolve to solve this problem, right?
@@lv2mkd173 no its not ideally for that. Id say colour warper might be your best way forward - there may be something in fusion butIm not a fusion expert. Sorry couldn't help further. Darren
@@DarrenMostyn 🤛Thank you very much for your answer
I love your videos, Very helpful!
I am wondering if you can make a video or maybe even direct me to another video on how to export HDR footage from Davinci Resolve with either Dobly vision or HDR10+ that is supported for youtube. Personally I am grading on the newest Macbook pro.
Hey Darren...thank you so much for all the info you so selflessly share!
Between the teachings of yourself and @MrAlexTech, I am quite proficient in Resolve, and it was the key denominator in my decision to purchase the Studio Version of Resolve. If either of you are not yet sponsored by Black Magic Design, it is a sin!
Again, thank you for the wisdom you impart...I was curious though, what app/software are you using for your screen recording?
Thank you, appreciated. I use Camtasia for screen recording, but I dont recommend it all. Its clunky, and incredibly slow to render out the screen records. I keep meaning to change but by the time I come to record I have forgotten again!! Blackmagic Dont sponsor us, but they do donate prizes every now again. I have a livestream tomorrow giving away lots of goodies. ruclips.net/user/live7YbKvWrgDKY?feature=shared
Hey Darren, I think your work is absolutely insane and I have a few questions about how to make Gopro Collergrading it. Could you make a video about it?I think that might interest a lot of people.
Thank you Paul, appreciated. I just did one on drones recently, so its prob a bit early but I do get asked a lot yes. I also have one on 8 bit footage - these might cover you for a bit!! Thanks again for the ind words. Livestream tomorrow BTW 1800 GMT. Prizes giveaway.
when you move your offset wheel, aren't you also affecting the other tones in the shot ? wouldn't it still be necessary then to add a mask to just apply the grade on the skin tones?
yes im adjusting the entire shot. Id get that good early on skin tones.
Hi Darren, I love your channel! Im working on skin tones in my project, and when I use the HSL qualifier and then turn on highlight focus, my grade disappears, and it goes back to viewing it as log. So I can't really adjust my skin tones because I cant see the grade. Any tips?
yes, join my email list for details of my forthcoming masterclass in MAY. I cover this topic in detail. It's quite complex to address in quick response on YT TBH. I haven't covered it in a YT video.
Awesome!
Glad you think so!
Thank you!
Hey mate. Ive only just gotten back into film production after 20+yrs out of it (yes I am an old bugger). The issue I am running into, and I cant really see anyone who has addressed it, is I predominatnly shoot live music. Where RGB lights on the skin, throws off all sorts of wonderful colour combos. My question is, apart from eyeballing it, how can I trust my vectroscope, or if indeed (which is what I do) NOT use it at all??? Cheers mate.

Ok. Good to know!
How do you avoid gamma shifts with mac exports working in a 2.4 gamma?
Hey Darren, quick question. Do your clients send you the Log footage or do you ask for a ProRes 4444 of the whole thing to save space?
Depends on the job. Note that prores can be log ? You maybe mean RAW?
@@DarrenMostyn Oh sorry, I was referring to if the clients gave you like large hard drives that contained the uncompressed actual Log or RAW files, yes
Depends on the job. I have such varying work and clients we get a mixture of both so not easy to answer as a straight comment. I do music videos and long form TV so huge variety. I go into this in-depth on my paid Masterclasses.
@@DarrenMostyn Gotcha. Thank you man!
