"Villains who twirl their moustache are easy to spot. But her or someone like her will always be with us, waiting for the right climate to flourish." I've been thinking about this quote as far back as 05(when we got a proto trump as our Prime Minister). It makes me sad that people are so gullible
"DRUMHEAD!" -Brad Boimler
hey, out of curiosity, which country?
I'm a Black prior service Marine. With that being said there's more racism in the military than any where else. Many vets use so called patriotism to shield their racism. What you must realize is that most of them were poor farm people and southerners in the first place, that's why they joined in the first place. People with options never join the military.
damn.
that last sentence hit me hard... damn!
Semper Fi brother. You are 100% correct.
There was a window during the 80s and 90s when racism in the military was at a low point. It leaped right after 9/11.
It was good for me. I wasn't too poor to have any other options, but poor enough to not have the options I wanted in Kansas. Living and working and being mentored by and making friends with and putting my life into the hands of a wide diversity of people I was never exposed to made me realize how homogeneous and warped the world view that I had grown up with.
Going back home was a reckoning, realizing that I didn't feel like I belonged there anymore.
@@kirkdarling4120 I hate to say it, but 9/11 was a godsend for the US military. Frothing at the mouth, rage-induced patriotism had never been easier to come by, and recruitment was a turkey shoot...
"That old guy on the porch" is my dad. And you're right. My sympathy, my empathy, my compassion is better spent uplifting those he puts down.
I don't know if I'll ever give up trying to "save my dad's soul". I don't know.
Well said,Steve. Thank you for articulating the truth. ❤ " All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing"
I talked with my grandfather about this and he came to the same conclusion, that he allowed himself to be played when he was young. He was from Germany and died with 96 years in 2017. He was shocked that Trump won in 2016.
To be fair, my grandfather realized that he allowed himself to be played when the Reichstag was on fire on Monday 27 February 1933.
I guess it was too late then.
When he was 12?
And this was made BEFORE Jan 6, so all of these things ring even more true now.
As someone who has generally leaned more towards that narrative of trying to reach out to right-wingers, I think it is easy for some liberals and moderates (especially ones in places of privilege like myself) to get lost in the psychology of the perpetrators and forget about the core issues. Whether that twinge of sympathy will ever evaporate for me i don’t know, but I’m glad I watched this video today because people like me need to keep in mind who the real victims are.
I remebdere who the victiims are But th Trump suppoirters nnumber 70 million. It's ghard to win an election against those numbers. Taking them down seems sensible. If it can be done cheap[y,
Real victims. That speaks loud.
The psychology is useful to know, because it enables us to examine ourselves for the pitfalls. It's not useful for changing the minds of conservatives, however. There's this odd, infantilization of conservatives, as if they were too stupid or naive to understand why they believe the things they do. But make no mistake, they *know what they're doing and why they're doing it.* They're ok with killing, defrauding, and enslaving the people they deem to be "the wrong people."
The show isn't for themselves, it's for moderates and undecideds who don't know what's going on, not other conservatives.
I don't care about their souls, I just want their Senate seats
Likewise. We need to vaccinate ourselves from fascism.
ITS TREASON THEN! EXECUTE ORDER 66!
Facts ☝️
Exactly!!!!! I really don’t care how they feel anymore, don’t want to hear about their feelings anymore. The world is moving on without them because they are too busy playing victim against people they deem other and beneath them. Fu*k them all
10 billion X this.
Some of those souls are close family and friends. I miss being able to talk to them. I’ll keep trying
You're not alone. Fight on! ✊
That's one of the unspoken tragedies of the Trump administration, it's the division of family and friends from one another. There is nothing more sad than being divided from the people you love based on political propaganda. They all think Trump has made such radical changes in this nation and he has in a sense, but it's been in all the wrong ways. As far as actual policy he hasn't done anything more than make token changes that still favor the rich and powerful and make the poor struggle that much more, but they buy into his narrative because they believe that he is one of them when he's always been as far from it as possible. We have to try to fix this division, the problem won't go away just because Biden won. They think he is a messiah and we need to show them he's just another deeply deranged and flawed human being. They'll forgive any action he does and excuse any behavior he exhibits because he has played on their fears for years. We need to keep doing what we are doing without animosity because this change will take time to even being to work itself out. Don't keep the division going, we have to start the process of healing this nation. If we don't all forward progress will have been in vein. Like it or not we are all stuck on this rock together and we have to find a way back to working together.
Rspec - don't try too harrd. Look after yourself.

Talk to then about anything but Trump. I have family like that and hes not allowed to talk about Trump at family gatherings.
@@ahouyearno Sounds like good practical advice.
A big part that almost nobody is addressing is narcissistic abuse - how effective it can be and and how it's one of the trademarks of a practiced sociopath.
There is no such thing as a 2020 Trump supporter's soul.
I've mostly stopped debating them except for the occasional opportunity to troll someone with a fact check that I can't resist. I was at a difficult customer a couple of weeks ago, while the election results were still in the initial stages of questioning. The owner came out and ranted at me 2 or 3 times about the product he wasn't happy with (which was justifiable). Then he explained himself by a comparison: "Well, I'm just like Trump. He's harsh but he really cares about the American people". The comparison didn't exaclty create a positive impression with me like he expected it to, but I had to bite my tongue. I presume because I am white, over 50 and live in Texas, he assumed I felt the same way. Good thing I had a facemask on.
The cause of your problems are never people with less influence, power and standing then yourself. People who can't see that are not worth saving, except for recycling.
Well said... I'm definitely going to steal that/quote you on that.
As a Trans Woman of Colour it's always been my philosophy that - it's not my responsibility to drag you kicking and screaming toward being a better person. I don't fucking owe you that. No one does. Being a good person is a choice. It takes work. It takes energy. And I'm not wasting my time trying to make you a better person while you fight me off and tell me that everyone like me should die for being like me.
They have my pity but that's it.
thoughts and prayers they can have.
@@ahouyearno HA!!!
Fantastic as always. I have been struggling with how to reconcile the fact that members of my friends and family voted against my interests, but also against their own, and against people they don't know. I still don't know how I will interact with these people in the future. I'm easily overrun with emotion. When someone from the other side of an issue starts to say things like "I thought you were the most tolerant person I've ever known, but you refusing my kind offer of coming and being treated as family, just because we disagree politically, when you know it doesn't matter what they do at the top, makes you the intolerant one!", my resolve immediately starts to break. I do not like conflict among people I know and care about. Maybe that's what I need to get over.
Anyways, Steve, like I said, fantastic video. I've shared on FB in the hopes of some of these people watching the video, as well as reading my own thoughts regarding this. I appreciate the support.
You are one of my favorite RUclipsrs. Yes I agree. It's endlessly angering that some people have no problem hurting others, or seeing others get hurt, as long as it's not them--all because they have some perception that they are better than those others.
I like to think of myself as being logical and level headed, but it's hard to try to be a voice of reason and understanding when someone is yelling that, as a member of the LGBTQ community, I shouldn't exist--or that anyone else from other groups shouldn't exist. People talk about wanting us to return to a time when there was respectful discourse between the parties. What they really want, is for all of us to shut up so they can continue to discriminate against us, and it's really frustrating. They're starting from a place of disrespect, so why should I have to be the one respectful to them, when they're not being respectful to me? But we do, or we're the ones that are seen as rocking the boat, and causing the problems.
Thank you for expressing so eloquently what I myself feel about the Trump supporter. Be safe
This. Thank you.
Hi Steve, thumbs up from the rest of the world!
Thank you for this.
very well spoken
Thank you. First time I have ever listened to you and I wish I had found you sooner.
A voice of reason is a blessing these days. Thanks for making sense.
I'm a follower as of now.
thank you
This is really great, Steve. LLAP from Ireland 🖖🏼
We need an update. Is he STILL flying this flag? After 1/6 and everything since?
No pity for the orange comb-over & his cult..... nothing but contempt......
I understand Steve, I kept seeing all these pieces about forgiveness of Trump supporters. One thing about forgiveness is it requires repentance, and I've yet to meet a Trump supporter willing to admit they were wrong and make amends.
This. They won't admit trump was bad. They don't want forgiveness.
Exactly this. When they want to give up on the hatred and make amends, I'll be more than happy to welcome them into the fold. Until then, I can't find anything but contempt for them.
Here here.
Great video, Steve. I feel the same. I feel you had more to say and if so, look forward to the follow up video.
Thank you, Steve.
I say this all the time! Thank you for saying it! I don’t have any sympathy left over for people like the old man on the porch, because I have a finite amount of it, and I’ve used it all up, and shed as many tears as I’m ever going to, on the victims of trumpism! I got nothing for the perpetrators of oppression, and cruelty, that they wouldn’t have for me and mine...
Excellent as always. Keep up the good fight sir.
Word
Well done!
after all that's been revealed about trump & trumpism, these people haven't changed one bit these past 2 years.
Superb video.
Very well said, Steve!!
It's hard to care about people you know don't care about you.
Thanks, Steve. 💖💔
Thanks. Keep up the good messages.
Commenting to feed the algorithm. Well spoken, Steve. Kudos!
lol, that old guy you talk about reminds me a lot of one of my uncles... He and his wife both support Trump vehemently. He is a retired decorated marine who fought in Vietnam. I cannot understand for the life of me how he can support Trump. My aunt meanwhile says her support is 100% dependent on Trump's anti-abortion stance... And nothing else. Those two confuse the hell out of me.
Great video Steve. I've been a long time subscriber but haven't seen a lot of your recent stuff. Great job.
I was hoping you'd weigh in on this. I've been trying to figure out how to reach this group for about a decade and I find your perspective useful.
Steve - when you’re on your game you’re really good. This one is really good.
Well-said
This is a great video.
loved this very on point
I've been a subscriber for about 5 years. I first came on for your atheist vids, but then I just drifted and then I saw your thumbnail on this video. I really believe you spoke with certain amount perfection. This was spoken so well that in a few short minutes you co even everything that had to be covered. A keeper for sure.
i just give back all the compassion they have given me......which is zero...
Really good soap box. Thanks for sharing. Ive been wrestling with that for sometime now.
I'm all for understanding why people vote for them so we can counter their arguments and minimize them, politically.
Preach, Brother Steve. Preach
This sums up how I feel so well.
People rarely, if ever, change their views by being shouted out. However, I don't know how you are meant to summon the patience necessary to help these people who cloak themselves in vile rhetoric and behaviour, and upon finally losing, demand the other side accommendate them.
I think historically when there were people so against a society there was no common ground to come to, that society either banished them or executed them. I do not know what a modern solution would be. People way smarter than me are going to have to solve this one.
People rarely change their views just in general.
Plus which they arre privillevged. In those terms yheir behaviojur isc uderstandable. Justice, what's to becomeof Trumpists, that's for the victims to chose and probably the courts to decide. I'd say. At soime stage.
Shouting doesn't help but neither do facts. They need mental health evaluation and care. The level of delusion and cognitive dissonance they engage in needs professional counseling and therapy.
@@TreyBlythe
Theoretically we banish them by seeing that they don't hold power anymore. But they have it, and have rigged the system and the discussions to ensure they maintain it.
Thank you for this video, I know it's an older one but it still feels relevant to me. I appreciate how clearly you were able to lay out both the twinge of sympathy and the evaporation of it. My parents aren't openly Trump supporters, but they did vote for him in 2020. Trying to come to terms with that fact has been one of the most difficult and painful of my life, particularly since they refused to try to explain their decision. I had to eventually (and sadly) come to the conclusion that these two people I love and respect are in fact weak and selfish in this situation. As much as I hate that fact, in some way the day I accepted it was the day I finally, truly grew up.
I’m glad I found your channel.
I’d love to see these barriers that keep people from voting.
You nailed it Steve, and you always do, but this time you really nailed it and outlined all the valid reasons why people get sucked into the beliefs and propaganda of the Conservatives.
I’d love a transcript of this.
Word!
He's a vet and probably takes the American Flag down at sunset (US Flag code) and takes the other one down at the same time. Not a comment on his character it's just why he takes them down every night.
At one time or another, we've all fallen for a lie -- that's universally human. But we don't all fall for the same lies, and I think the sort of lie you fall for tells something about you as a person.
Im a little late to your videi, but everything yuve said still stands true. Thank you steve. i agree 100%
To the true supporters, they are not played...he meshes with their principle believe in bigotry, classism, immigrants and the LGBTQ community...they've had generation of manifest destiny rhetoric taught to them...church members I used to respect support them and that nationalism message...I'm grateful for my friends that are not proud of the historical issues and hatred. And for the new people I've met during this time we are in...as a black woman I'm still hurt and disappointed, but I am also filled with hope for a truly better future...its damn work and hard but worth it. Thank you for your thoughts steve. Keep on doing what you do!💜
There is a portion of people who literally would of voted for a potato as they want to get away from a life long politician.
Did you mean carrier pigeon?
As a liberal progressive veteran, it pisses me off to no end when I see Republicans claim the military and service members and veterans and the flag, and patriotism in general as their thing; and Democrats never fight back much on it. I understand that I'm in the minority politically when it comes to veterans, but it's not like there are only 5 of us.
I can recognize that John McCain was a war hero, and still vote against him for Obama because I don't like his politics. I can go to war, and criticize that war later and recognize that I was part of the problem. I can love my country and acknowledge the history of white supremacy colonialism, etc.
The idiotic tribalism between the military and the Republican party needs to change.
Okay Steve i kid you not the ad that youtube popped under your video was for “Preparation H”. Because any conservatives who watch this video are definitely gonna be butthurt.
Great video as always!
I love you Steve. I've been following you for awhile and I fucking love you. Thank you for being a voice of reason in an insane world. You really should be a starship captain, but if you ran for president, you'd have my vote.
I want to add comments to this video but by the end of it I found myself kinda speechless. You just put it all together perfectly and while I feel like I should add my voice to it, I couldn't do anything better.
Our divide in this country is often ill-defined by our political divisions, but starkly visible when you look at the voting records of rural counties vs those of the urban metropolitan areas.
The coasts and cities don't want to be ruled by the heartland any more than the heartland wants to be ruled by the cities. How do we resolve this particular conflict of governmental preference?
There isn't any easy solution to this conundrum outside of radical electoral reform nationwide to make everyone's votes more representative than they currently are.
Once they no longer allow themselves to be used as tools to cause the suffering of others I will worry about the state of their souls. Until then, they can get dragged along, kicking and screaming, into a better world.
They cannot be saved. All we can do is save ourselves from them.
Last night I finished reading an article in Harper's Magazine about Kenosha, Wisconsin. Kenosha used to be a wealthy place built strong by the unions and civic participation. The auto companies and other businesses did the area well. The companies have largely closed down now and the unions are a pale shadow of what they once were. Kenosha is still doing well when compared to the rest of the nation, but it has clearly declined. The people there, most of them, don't blame the Republicans though. They see nothing wrong with Trump and his antics and think the Democrats have been complaining about nothing, it's all overblown. The people of Kenosha have been kicked in the face, repeatedly, their standard of living is a fraction of what it once was, but they see nothing wrong. No blame to the Republicans at all. They don't even want to talk about politics, their midwestern values sees political talk as something bothersome and rude. Don't talk about subjects which would upset people.
The author painted Kenosha as a still decent place to live. The people seem nice enough. But, like Steve, I've lost my capacity to pity them. If the majority of them see nothing wrong about Trump and the Republican party then they deserve whatever fate befalls them.
(Note: this article was written and published before the events of August, 2020.)
I wonder what you would think of the motivation behind someone who would religiously raise the confederate flag each day above his house, along with his wife beside him.
Greetings from across the ocean. Great video.
Just wanted to add that the very youngest of the korean war vets that are left would today be 85, and the youngest vietnam vets 63. It's perfectly possible to be a post-vietnam cold war era veteran and still mange to qualify as a "grumpy old man".
My boss is still flying his trump flag. It is always frustrating to have to go to work and see it. It is hard to believe he does not see ugliness. I guess it just just does not bother him.
The problem with those people isn't that they don't see the ugliness. They do see it. And they are totally ok with, and support it. They WANT a fascist dictatorship, as long as it's "their guy".
I came for the Star Trek videos but this was amazing! Preach!
Steve the other day I was at work and there's very few people I will a political discussion with that work. He voted for Trump last time this time he voted for Biden but he then said something that wasn't hard for me to understand but it was hard for me to accept. He said why I'm not happy with Biden because the only reason he chose Kamala Harris was because she was a woman of color. I told him you have made a statement that only a white man could make. You do realize that every other vice president we've ever had even the one time we have a biracial president the vice president was still a white man. He said yeah but and I said don't tell me it's just because of all of them were just more qualified than everybody else on the planet they were picked for specific reason. They could have been picked because of the region they come from they could have been picked because there are hardliner or there are moderate or they appeal to another part of the base of whatever party it is that maybe the main person doesn't appeal to as much but there was a specific reason why they were chosen a vice president is chosen to bolster the ticket. Joe Budden pick her because she was a woman of color yeah he did but she's also qualified for the job. I asked why do you think Sarah Palin was chose for the McCain ticket because she had a strong lean with blue collar voters she was known to be a hard liner as where McCain was a moderate.
I am for the tough love aproach, reaching a hand and dialogue, but also ruthlessy not sparing the dark stuff, if lovingly, mostly. That includes if peopke are on their way, people can change but no reason to pretend nothing was wrong.
We have a corporate dopoly. They do not want to change the status quo of the dnc sneering at their base while the gop panders to backward wedge issues that makes theirs feel good. Both are owned by establishment figures who promote the economic status quo.
Shouting out to Innuendo Studios? I am loving the recent batch of Breadtube crossovers.
"Don't try to teach a pig to sing, it wastes your time and annoys the pig"
I live in a place with massive amounts of Trump supporters, many of whom were always active in the Republican party but others who registered to vote just to vote for him.
If the Democrats had done just the bare minimum things might have been different here. But they ceded my area to the Republicans and too many of my neighbors have the Stockholm Syndrome.
Most are totally irredeemable but there are enough who aren't and just want people to reach out to them.
If Trump supporters asked for forgiveness, I would grant it in a heartbeat, but only as far as I can. After all, I'm not part of most of the groups that have been hurt by them, and I'm only one person. I wouldn't forget, but I would forgive.
But they won't ask, so they won't get it. Redemption requires a willingness to admit you've done something wrong.
I think it was Ian Danskin from Innuendo Studios who tweeted that

@Steve Shives I must say I came for star trek but I stayed because you not only voice a conscious but you do so in a thoughtful and non moralistic style, that is really rare not only on the internet but on public stages in general. Maybe it's inevitable given that information is more fragmented now, and people can look for viewpoints on facebook or news channels that agree with what they already think- as opposed to the old days where everyone listened to News At Ten and examined the same set of input.
Not Republicans Steve, conservatives. Conservatives have been placing barriers since the founding of this nation. Whether they were mainly Democrat in the 1800's to early 1900's or switched parties due to the Democrats backing civil rights, its conservatives that are at issue, not just Republicans.
As a conservative myself, I would contend conservatives haven't been the issue. Authoritarian fascists and bad faith actors looking to abuse our systems for power and wealth have been a perpetual plague, and this country was setup in a way to empower them.
You can't force someone to be a good person. They have to want to change.
They have souls? Never would've guessed from their vitriol.
they deserve absolutely no sympathy as they're going to be the first to give none, don't fall for it
@Chris Lindsay lol I've never even been in the states, the issue with the US is that it's omnipresent on the web and the insane US political scene is a world problem. your alt-right idiocy is widespread everywhere. I don't care about your liberal party or Biden, don't worry. I just can't wait for the poisonous alt-right cloud to finally leave europe as well as it's a fad fueled just by politicians enraging the most ignorant part of the population and as it was said on this video conning them, it's not something they can do for the long run luckily
The whole thing is emotional blackmail and a complete abuse of trust and empathy
That is Trump to a t.
Yeah, you just helped me feel that 'twinge' of sympathy, too. But you're absolutely right - we've all been played at some point in life, but we recognize it, learn from it and stop - they don't. And they're willing to hurt others rather than admit they've been played.
This is SO true and succinctly stated! Thank you!
I want nothing to do with them.
I have sympathy for the old man in the sense that I believe an advocate for progress must want that progress to benefit everyone. Everyone won't benefit to the same degree, because we don't all start with the same handicaps, but civil rights and fair economics and access to education and access to medicine makes every person's life better. I have an academic sympathy for him, I guess you could say.
However, my sympathy does not negate his culpability.
You seem like a really, genuinely nice dude.
