    I started as a 10 year old with a spinning reel with left crank. Have never changed. I did buy a right crank TD Zillion when my right shoulder was injured and learned to cast left handed. I have 2 TD Zillions one left and one right crank. I also have 3 Shimano Calcutta TE's 101GT 201 and 401. Being able to cast right or left is an advantage in certain situations. Problem is which reel you have in hand at the moment. So some switching does occur. Not having to switch hands, when the bait lands you are fishing.

    • @mrfilamfishing
      @mrfilamfishing  10 месяцев назад

      I can reel with both hands and you're right, it is good to be able to reel with both hands in certain situations. Those are some nice reels. Especially that Shimano Calcutta. I almost bought a similar reel from Daiwa's side.

    The guides on your rod that wrap around are called “spiral wrapped”. Disadvantage with those guides is that there is no way to store the rod on the ground without some guides being face down. How is the casting distance compared to other reels?

    • @mrfilamfishing
      @mrfilamfishing  21 день назад

      Yeah, never had a spiral wrapped rod before. Quite unique. I know of other rods that have them, but just never thought I'd use one. I don't store my rod on the ground anyway so I'm okay with it. As far as casting distance with this reel, it literally launch a country mile. Check out one of my saltwater videos where I caught a Cabezon. You'll see how well it cast. Definitely cast farther than my Tatulas and some of my JDM reels.

    Yeah i dont do the switching of hands casting either. I did on my first ever baitcaster back in the early 2000’s; and i fished it like that for a year or two….. because thats how my dad and grandad taught me… but i always found it to be kinda silly because we all set up our spinning reels to reel with left hand, so why would you switch with baitcasters?? But then in like 2017 when i started fishing more seriously, i bought a couple rh casters and returned them for lh casters. Its much more natural to reel with left and rod in right if youre right handed.

Catch and release is better now. A lot of people kept what they caught when I first started. Equipment is the biggest change. You had to train your thumb to cast baitcasters, now the brakes are so good it’s like using the old Zebco push button. Rods are so much lighter than the old fiberglass rods. I have all the new stuff. My favorite jdm reel is the steez sv tw (but i currently dont own any they expensive). Followed by the steez A ii (i only have one). Then anything SV TW i love for their ability to throw tiny lures. I have zillion sv tws, i have coastal sv tws, i have salamandura sv tws, and i have tatula sv tw. When it comes down to it though, anytime i am going to spend more than $200-$300 on a rod or reel, rods take priority. Buying a specialty megabass rod like from the destroyer series or the orochi x10 series is of more value than having a high end reel. The $200 tatula sv tw performs very similarly to a $500 steez sv tw. But rods…. Nope. A $500 destroyer is incredibly different and better than a $200 levante, or a $200 daiwa rod. You can feel everything on the high end rod, and feel it well. It also loads up differently and manuvers differently. Its worth the money to upgrade rods if u can afford a nice one…. At least a nice jig rod and cranking rod.

    • @mrfilamfishing
      @mrfilamfishing  7 месяцев назад

      @@catchofthedave8681 You are a man that did it's research well. You're right about the rod and reel part. Lower end rods are definitely different from a higher end rod. But reels are a bit different. With reels, I like to hit the sweet spot. Anything with an SV spool or Mag Z boost spool hits that sweet spot. So no need for me to even go up to a Steez. Especially when you can find some of the middle end Daiwa reels to have Hyperdrive nowadays.

      Best way is to type the name of the reel you're looking at on Google and look for an official Daiwa website that comes up on the search with your reel spec. For example, I Googled the reel in this video and after scrolling, I found an official Daiwa website from Scandinavia out of all places and clicked on it. However, there are some sites that's selling the specific reel you're looking at in Digitaka that may have more info than Digitaka.
      May I ask which reels are you looking at? Maybe I can help by sending you a link.

      The older American version has a deeper spool, 9 CRBBs and 1 Magsealed BB with a 15 lbs drag. Those specs alone makes your choice a great one. The main reason why I went with the JDM is because I got a deal on it, and also it has a drag clicker. Does the US version have one? Because if it does then I believe it's the better reel. The JDM has only 13.2 lbs of drag, which is fine for what I do with the reel.

    Casting with the right hand, and retrieving with the right as well. It really is not important, i usually swap hands while the lure is still flying in the air, so you're not wasting any time swapping hands when the lure is in the water. Always thought that paying attention to this is stupid because everyone should cast and retrieve the way they feel comfy with, not the way someone else told em to.
