Met Charlie in 1965 or so when he was hitching out from Chicago to San Jose. I was 17 and was working at a Chevron station in south San Jose. I had never heard blues before. We talked a while (he was looking for some work) and he played his harp for me (when he told me he played "harp" I thought he meant one of those things with strings..... I was just a dumb kid) before shouldering his duffel and heading down the road. I was dumbfounded. I've been a blue fan ever since. I've seen him play countless times but have never spoken to him since that day. I hope to see him play again one day soon.
Back around 1966 I discovered the blues. Charlie and Paul Butterfield were two early heroes. I love this video. I'm so glad Charlie made it all these years and is still thriving and recording. Very fun just to watch him talk and show his stuff. They could have made this an hour long for me.
My husband interviewed Charlie for the WA Blues Society magazine and said that of a hundred or so he interviewed and published articles on Charlie was one of the best and nicest subjects of all time.
I talked briefly to Charlie years ago, and got his autograph. I try to play the harp and he, and Paul Butterfield were my idols. He is a nice man, and patient, and appreciative of his fans. A true gentleman, a great harp player, and a rare individual. Oh yeah, and one of the remaining Chicago Blues shakers.
I met Charlie, Mark Hummel and Kim Wilson in a small venue in Florida for their Harmonica Blowout. All three were really nice and approachable to talk to learning harp players.
obviously a down to earth man....real....unlike some modern musicians....who act like the world revolves around them....God bless you charlie.....With a famous great initial song like Christo Redemptor....God knows you are the best....The best !....So honest.....so real....thanks......

He seems so calm and happy. Truely one of the greatest.
