Indeed, the suppression caps were a bit hard to reach on the underside of that little board. They looked like decent ceramics at least; so far I had no problem with those. And I do have a decent GFI around, just in case :)
I think it mostly depends on operating hours (including the heat) and storage conditions. But one of mine certainly had a bulge and seem to have vented quite some time ago.
Hey, I have one of those, but in the older early 60's dark Heathkit Blue color. It's way overdue for a refresh of at least the capacitors. Oh BTW, I wouldn't mount the electrolytics that way unless the tops are very well insulated from touching the chassis. Also the capacitors across the line to chassis are a bit of a risk these days, I'd replace them with AC line rated capacitors. That's mostly compensated by your using a 3-wire line cord, so at worst you'll blow an house fuse, not electrocute yourself.
I did consider putting some insulation between the caps and the chassis, but the insulation wraps around and gives about 0.5mm air gap; for the 300V that one of them has, this should be plenty. If it starts to bulge, the short is probably the least of the problems. I also briefly considered some new Y-class caps for the input filter; but I didn't have any at hand and might come back to that later. I have GFI/RCD everywhere, so there shouldn't be any real problem. At least they aren't RIFA 😁
Nice restoration! I love your videos and appreciate them a lot. When I saw the wire harness, it sparked my interest right away... was it factory made and supplied as a part, or did the person who assembled the unit make it themself? So, a deep dive into the manual and the wire harness was indeed made by Heathkit. Nice lamp cord, although I'd rather use something with double layer of plastic underneath that sheath.
Thanks! The manual lists the harness as a component indeed; I only found one issue: the routed one pair of wires too close to that amplifier tube, so they got singed. I bent them away a bit to prevent further damage to the insulation. I'd gladly replace the lamp cord wiht something better; sadly there seems to be no cloth insulation looking one out there. The only ones I could find are "iron" cords and those are stiff and bulky and while "cloth" looking, they still have a "modern" style to them. As long as it's for my own personal use, I'm fine with the lamp cord providing a nice look and functionallity, I can deal with the safety aspect by being very careful 😅
@@atkelar story time, I once was doing some wiring job including lamp assembly and got hold of excess 3x0.5mm² lamp cords with double PVC insulation under the cloth. Still keeping them in my lab for radio restorations and some highly aesthetic applications.
I have one of these, yes... but I'm a metric cat and these are imperial nuts, so they don't fit nearly as good as they should. The binding posts in particular are also "sunken" in the plastic case, so one needs a very thin one; and the potentiometers and switches stick out a bit too far. So these ones were driving me nuts 😜

Recently did the same test with the original filter cap, one of them anyways. It wasn't to bad for it's age.
