- This is a clip from one of my favorite movies (The Great Race -- 1965) where Professor Fate (Jack Lemmon) unveils his masterpiece car the Hannibal Twin 8 to his faithful servant Max (Peter Falk). Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk were great together in this wonderful fun and enjoyable film.
Every time Professor Fate said "Push the button, Max", disaster loomed around the corner.
Jack Lemmon was at his greatest here and Peter Falk hung with him every frame. An inspired pair.
"Just one more thing, Professor." :D
Dick and Muttley in pilot episode of "The Wacky Racers ".
I still say "push the button, max" when I need someone to push a button.
So do I!
I always say "Attach the hooks!' whenever we are tying something down. LoL
So do I!
Whenever I break break something the first thing I say is "MAAAAAAAAAX!"
Push the button, Frank.
That final Max scream always has me in stitches!! 🤣🤣🤣
The Hannibal Twin-8! The greatest automobile ever built from stolen parts! Push the button Max!
Why can't they make movies like this anymore? Just an all around fun movie to watch.
Nobody cares for slapstick, it's all about the crude sexual humor nowadays. Sad, but true.
Bunch of grouchy geezers up in here looking to complain. Plenty of kid's movies (and even a few aimed at adults) are still like this, you just don't pay attention to/watch them. Sad, but true.
I can't remember who said it but essentially it was "a lot of famous actors *can't* act, even Oscar-winners. So they choose projects where they can play minor variations on the same characters that made them famous." To do a movie like this you'd need a huge cast of really game actors with no ego and lots of range. Then you'd have to be sure the movie was all-over funny and entertaining enough to be permanently rewatchable.
They should do a movie about Professor fate and how he met Max and how the famous words became Push the button Max!
🙄🙄🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🙃🙃🤣🤣
One of my absolute faves. Falk was brilliant, as was Curtis, but Lemmon soared. His performance as Fate, then the Crown Prince, and then Fate pretending to be the Crown Prince, is legendary. This movie does not get the recognition it deserves, and Mancini's score.....
I think I'll go and put it on.
It practically bombed at the box office but deserved better. One of the all time greats. :D
Quite possibly the best ensemble casts of all time. Everyone played off each other so well.
This is in my top five favorite movies of all time.
I get such a kick out of this movie. As others have said, this is legit a live action cartoon. Professor Fate is such a great villain
How could you forget Stunningly Gorgeous and supremely talented Natalie Wood.🤩💘
I only learned about the movie a month ago and watched it just two days ago. Damn right it doesn’t get deserved recognition, its absolutely hilarious, i was enjoying myself thoroughly from start to finish.
I love how Professor Fate is so happy with his creation he has to smooth himself by self hugging lol! Jack Lemmon nailed it!
I had a guy named Max who worked for me and I could not resist
"You're the sloppiest tucker-inner in all of Pottsdorf- you're banished, banished, banished"
The first shot here of Professor Fate's mansion is a great example of a forced-perspective miniature. That way they were able to get the scaled-down house and the front gates all inside a sound stage
laika has got them pretty well covered, e.g. boxtrolls and Caroline other mothers house
I really wish they'd go back to using miniatures and models again, even if it was for comedic and self-referential purposes. LOTR did it for authentic purposes, but these old-school ones are so goddamn charming.
Word is, the Dick Dastardly and Muttley characters were based on Professor Fate and Max, and of course Dastardly's car, the Mean Machine, was based on this one.
Even Dick Dastardly waited until the race before he blew up his car.
Funny you mention that becuse fate was the insparation for dastardly.
The funny thing is: If you watch "The Wacky Races" Dick Dastardly is usually far ahead of everybody else. If he just finished the race instead of setting traps he could easily win.
In the pilot for "Wacky Races Forever" they made a joke about this. They show Dastardly and Muttley waiting to spring a trap on their competitors. Muttley taps Dastardly on the shoulder and points out that they are about a 100 feet from the Finish Line. IIRC, Dastardly points out that they have to win by cheating.
"MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAX"!
I must say Jack Lemmon was a genius in this film,as were most, love it!
Jejjer W I most certainly agree, and Jack and Peter made such a fabulous team. The chemistry was so perfect. Both were brilliant actors =)
+Jejjer W I am a Peter Falk's fan, but yeah, Jack Lemmon was a very good actor too.
To this day, if there's a button to be pushed -- especially if my kids are doing it -- I'll say, "Push the button, Max!" And they usually reply, "My name's not Max, Mom."
Peter Falk as Max and jack Lemmon as Professor Fate one of the best comedy duo's that should have been given a sequel!!!
Yes.!
Although a live-action sequel is unlikely, imagine what a CGI "Great Race" sequel could be like.
One of the greatest comedies of the 1960s. Still makes me laugh to this day. 🤣
2:09 Fate: Push the button max.
(Pushes button and fires mini cannon)
Fate: MAAAAAAAAAAAAX!!!!!!
Both these men were great comedic actors. Columbo one of the greatest T.V. characters EVER. Jack Lemmon always superb. Loved Peter Falk in the In-Laws with Alan Arkin. Miss both these fine actors.
So true and I have the same opinion!! So short sided to not give Peter Falk the money he was earning for the network and they made a bad decision and robbed posterity of untold episodes of a great show!!! I own every episode now and watch them all the time!!!
well will we'll all get'em back ..in TIME
I wish I could do that laugh.
Every time I start a test in work I say “push the button Max”!
Despite the fact that the parts were stolen, Professor Fate deserves some serious props here. The Great Leslie farmed out production of his vehicle to someone else, but Fate actually designed and built his own, and with some insane special features.
Though insane is the right word. That heating device would run down the battery in a few minutes, and I hate to think how the lifting mechanism compromises the suspension.
It is likely that the Heating Device is only intended to be used when the car is running. While running the Engine would generate enough power to charge the battery to run the device.
@@Solitaire001 He's got TWO engines and those big Rolls Royce magnetos! Wire 'em in series and you've got all the juice you need!
@@daveconleyportfolio5192 That's why I posted a comment to add this car to a video featuring a speed comparison of various fictional cars (such The Mystery Machine from "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You" and the Mach 5 from "Speed Racer'). In addition to the Hannibal Twin-8, I also mentioned The Leslie Special.
I also mentioned the Il Tempo Grande (from the movie "The Pinchcliff Grande Prix). It has two engines that are so powerful that when you start it it registers 7.8 on the Ritcher Scale, and is so fast that it has two speedometers, when one pegs the other take over.
Another car I mentioned was the GRX from "Speed Racer". It is so fast that in order to drive it you have to take a special drug to give you the reflexes needed to handle that much speed. Unfortunately, the drug makes you extremely thirsty and when you drink water you become terrified of moving any speed (even walking is too fast).
The tune cracks me up, every time I here it. I would like to record myself doing a bunch ridiculous non-dangerous stunts with this music in the background for my kids to watch, they would get a laugh out of it!!
HAHAHAHAAAA!!! PUSH THE BUTTON MAX!! The kids wrote FATE IS A FINK!! HAHAHAHAAAA!!
Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk that is too much!! Love this movie!!
Push the Button Max!! LOL
Peter Falk did a great Job as his evil partner lol
Thinking of reenacting this with my robotics team!!
Am I the only one who thinks of izma and kronk??? "Pull the lever kronk!" "Wrong lever!"
I am most certain that the Emperor's New Groove took inspiration from this.
Sierra Marchetti oh my gosh I just realized that connection...lol those tricky tricky Disney animators! Lol!
@@GeneralKenobi75 And I'm certain Hanna-Barbera took inspiration from this to make Dastardly and Muttley.
@@robbiewalker2831 That's also probable. Especially with Dick Dastardly taking influence from Professor Fate.
Sounds like Bullwinkle and Rocky (what me pull a rabbit out a hat. pulls out lion and shove it back in. wrong hat) and the creators of that cartoon probably got it from vaudeville.
Gotta love that Fate laugh. And " Maaaaaaaax!
It never stops being funny.
Jack Lemmon was brilliant as a villain here. I wish he did more roles like this 🤣
The funniest moment in the movie to me is when they are in Alaska or some freezing climate and Max breaks of the Professor's Moustache bc it's frozen...best part is when you can't see them and he shows Leslie and Ms Dubois how he did it...lmao
+Lawrence Caselton That moment is indelible to me also as a wonderful bit of comic genius! And when the bear comes in, and they go flying out in fear is also a highlight, as is the barroom brawl and Jack's maniacal laugh.
"Push the button Max!"
"MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAX!!!"
It's ready push the button Max :))) I love it
I've probably watched this particular scene or the next one, many times as a kid on VHS, when me and the Selis' family rented an RV. Loved the Pink Panther films back then!
I like Jack Lemmon! He is very good actor!
"Push the button, Max", the original "pull the lever, Kronk"
I'll have to watch this again just so I can keep track of how many times he says "Push the button, Max."
Am I to assume, that professor spends all his free time chuckling to himself until someone shows up?
"I had to go to the Rolls-Royce agency and steal a spare magneto."
Crazy to see Max and think "This is the grandfather from Princess Bride"
Max went straight though. Changed his name to Frank and joined the LAPD, where away from Professor Fate he found he had a talent for detective work. And of course, long experience of dealing with Fate's ego gave him ample skill at managing an endless series of villians who thought themselves equally clever.
At least they know the cannon works.
One of my favorite scenes
Perfect Movie to Watch it on a Sunday Afternoon 😁😁 BTW The Hannibal Twin 8 was My Favorite Car on this Movie
Next to Buford T Justice, Jack Lemmon's Professor Fate is the best comedic villain ever. Period End of sentence.
Buford T Justice and his ever-dependable Smokie :D
@@Max_Da_G I respectfully disagree. Up with the two of them (Fate and Justice) is Inspector Dreyfus from The Pink Panther Series once Clouseau drives him insane.
OMG! All favorite scenes!👏
That laugh....!
Some years ago, on a visit to Disney/MGM (as it was known then), I saw in a movie prop museum the Hannibal Twin-Eight on display, along with the Leslie Special.
(0:27) Notice the graffiti on Professor Fate's gate. It's driving me up the wall! Fate loves WHO??
+Montpelier Montgomery Fate Loves Fate. So yeah, himself :)
Before there was “Pull the lever, Kronk”, there was “Push the button, Max”
MAX!!! …. We’re number five ….
One of my all time favorite movies!
I am somehow reminded about how in Mystery Science Theater 3000 Dr. Clayton Forrester and TV’s Frank interacted with each other. It’s kinda funny, honestly.
Good to know I ain't the only one who thought that!
So, it's Jan 13th 2018. This morning around 9am ish Hawaii time, some moron "pushed the button" on the civil defense system warning us of some king of missile attack. Hours later it was deemed someone had pushed the wrong button.. which leads me to this lovely scene.
I love this movie lol.
My grandparents made me watch this and I’m not disappointed with that
The Hannibal Twin-8 is an awesome name!
WHY IS THIS NOT A MEME?!
espectacular Jack Lemmon, en este filme.....magistral su actuación
Peter Falk could push MY buttons any time!! :-)
I had this on VHS! 📼
1:40 his evil laugh makes me laugh! 🤣👏
they never thought about labelling the buttons I suppose lol
"MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAX!!!"
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAX.. LMBO.
It's like a live action Dick Dastardly.
The first half of this movie is great. The second half drags.
Funny thing to notice: the model actually matches the interior of the garage. The Hannibal 8 is facing the back wall and to it's right is a foundry/oven. If you look at the model, the chimney for that foundry/oven is right where it would be on the actual set.
Super film
A magneto is a device in an airplane that generates electricity to ignite the fuel-air mixture in an aircraft's engine. It's a critical part of the ignition system, and is mainly used in piston aircraft engines.
love love this movie
Nice to see Peter Falk before became famous as the great “ Columbo”.
I wonder if Jack Lemmon appeared on "Columbo" as a murderer.
*_"Drück aufs Knöpfchen, Max!_*
When I need to be cheered up, a guaranteed smile I'm
Push the button Max
Almost like "Pull the lever, Kronk." from "The emperor's new groove"
This soundtrack is the best
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAX!!!!!!!!!!
That laugh 😃
the best laugh of all time
Same cigar he smoked as Columbo.
0:01 He lives in The Addams Family Mansion.
A load of ready Cannon to blast wherever obstacle into Kingdom Come
Push The Button Max At Botch's Face
From No Straight Roads Encore Edition Transformers Earthspark Expedition
Best movie ever made
Push it max
Did they ever put out models of the cars from this movie?
Classic.
"Zhu Li! Do the thing!"
The first monster truck theory? lol
RIP Jack Lemmon
So this is the inspiration for “Pull the lever, Kronk! WRRROOOONNNNGGG LLLLEEEVVVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!” From The Emperor’s New Groove series!😄🤔🧐
His laugh 😂😂😂
That remembers me a lot of push the button frank, from mystery science theater 3000
MAAAAXXXX!!!!
This should be used on " counting cars " .
Fellow MiSTies, you're looking at the template for Dr. Forrester and T.V.'s Frank. "Push the button, Frank."
I like the graffiti on the gate. 🤣🤣🤣
The 1st monster truck!
That's Columbo? 😲
They can't make movies like this anymore not enough talent
I watched this with my niece a few days ago, she loved it. :)
More like it would cost $400 million.
Maaaax! Do the thing!
I'm beginning to think all the sound effects came from Looney Tunes. Even the "ka-pow" from the cannon is from Yosemite Sam cartoons.
They are. It's a Warner Bros. production.
It makes it that much funnier.
