  • This is a clip from one of my favorite movies (The Great Race -- 1965) where Professor Fate (Jack Lemmon) unveils his masterpiece car the Hannibal Twin 8 to his faithful servant Max (Peter Falk). Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk were great together in this wonderful fun and enjoyable film.

      I can't remember who said it but essentially it was "a lot of famous actors *can't* act, even Oscar-winners. So they choose projects where they can play minor variations on the same characters that made them famous." To do a movie like this you'd need a huge cast of really game actors with no ego and lots of range. Then you'd have to be sure the movie was all-over funny and entertaining enough to be permanently rewatchable.

    One of my absolute faves. Falk was brilliant, as was Curtis, but Lemmon soared. His performance as Fate, then the Crown Prince, and then Fate pretending to be the Crown Prince, is legendary. This movie does not get the recognition it deserves, and Mancini's score.....
    I think I'll go and put it on.

      The funny thing is: If you watch "The Wacky Races" Dick Dastardly is usually far ahead of everybody else. If he just finished the race instead of setting traps he could easily win.
      In the pilot for "Wacky Races Forever" they made a joke about this. They show Dastardly and Muttley waiting to spring a trap on their competitors. Muttley taps Dastardly on the shoulder and points out that they are about a 100 feet from the Finish Line. IIRC, Dastardly points out that they have to win by cheating.

    Despite the fact that the parts were stolen, Professor Fate deserves some serious props here. The Great Leslie farmed out production of his vehicle to someone else, but Fate actually designed and built his own, and with some insane special features.
    Though insane is the right word. That heating device would run down the battery in a few minutes, and I hate to think how the lifting mechanism compromises the suspension.

    • @Solitaire001
      @Solitaire001 10 месяцев назад

      It is likely that the Heating Device is only intended to be used when the car is running. While running the Engine would generate enough power to charge the battery to run the device.

      @@daveconleyportfolio5192 That's why I posted a comment to add this car to a video featuring a speed comparison of various fictional cars (such The Mystery Machine from "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You" and the Mach 5 from "Speed Racer'). In addition to the Hannibal Twin-8, I also mentioned The Leslie Special.
      I also mentioned the Il Tempo Grande (from the movie "The Pinchcliff Grande Prix). It has two engines that are so powerful that when you start it it registers 7.8 on the Ritcher Scale, and is so fast that it has two speedometers, when one pegs the other take over.
      Another car I mentioned was the GRX from "Speed Racer". It is so fast that in order to drive it you have to take a special drug to give you the reflexes needed to handle that much speed. Unfortunately, the drug makes you extremely thirsty and when you drink water you become terrified of moving any speed (even walking is too fast).
