Happens with home made multi scale guitars all the time. People play them then I ask them to look at the frets to see if they notice anything and it's like OMG......WTFFFFFF?????
I can't justify another guitar right now (I've got 6!) but I watch these vids just to hear Pete and Mick play! Also Pete had problems with a chord! OMG he is human after all - not a guitar god - now only a Demi-God! Lol Great to see and hear you together again guys
I discovered fanned frets because of Don Ross and Andy McKee, so acoustics are where that started for me. I tried it, and it did not require any learning at all. In fact, it was instantly more comfortable than standard frets. I also found they translated to bass very well. If I had the money, fanned frets are all I would play.
Truly AMAZING how easy the fan fret guitars are to play. You think it's going to be weird but it all fits your fingers like they were made for it. Mark Wahl in Oswego NY makes a great fan fret guitar.
Bill Yellow you would totally be able to use a fanned fret with a capo, bar chords are totally doable, there's a song I play where I bar the second fret on every string
I have this guitar - it works fine with a capo. I have zero problems. My only issue is that it's so... flat. Don't get me wrong, it's a perfect sound... everything is balanced. I have an upgraded Anthem SL preamp/pickup in it.. and it can sound amazing plugged in.. but I would compare it to my Thiel speakers. Thiels are extremely high end audio that are flat response and put out exactly what you feed them. Feed them a crappy signal? Get a crappy sound. EQ it and feed it a solid signal with solid components (playing)? You'll get a great sound. So, what's the problem? Well, I can plug my Larrivee in and it just sounds amazing on any setting. I am a sucker for jumbo's, admittedly, and Larrivee is, in my opinion, as good as any other acoustic on the market. I have a Cort Earth 1200 that sounds like a Martin... and plays every bit as well. I don't have a pickup for it, but acoustically, it's my favorite or equal to the Larrivee... So, back to the problem: The problem is that I have to customize every setting to the Ibanez to make it sound the way I want. Acoustically/not plugged in, it sounds extremely clean, but I can't pick out separate notes in the midrange because they are so equally leveled to everything else. TL:DR; It's a great guitar... it plays phenomenally, even if you've never played a fanned fret. However, be prepared for the most neutral and flat response you'll ever hear. The way I see it, this can be terrible or phenomenal depending on your needs. I think it can be a fantastic session guitar, especially if used direct-in. However, and I say this while it sits on my wall and I can't ever see myself selling it - I end up playing it less unplugged than any other acoustic because of the flat response. Also, I should say that i have a TonewoodAmp installed, so it has reverb and other "natural" effects, even unplugged. All in all - I guess I'd say that it's "lifeless," but intentionally so. I mean, isn't the whole point of fanned-fret guitars to make a move "balanced" or "even" tone across all strings? It does this perfectly. But the real question is, "Do you really want that?" I'm still not sure, but I do love the way it plays. I wish it had the sound of my Larrivee, but played the same as it already does.
Actually i had heard that (at least one of) the main reason(s) for Multiscale fretboards, is that you get a better equalisation of tensions across the strings. Certainly that is what the multi scale bass instruments seem to offer. And it certainly seems to work especially on 5 string basses, as the bottom B really seems more solid and "bigger" than the standard scale basses.
OK, got to the end of the video and i'm sold. These sound pretty good even over RUclips, and i could do with an acoustic guitar (even though i'm mainly a Violinist and Bassist). these look like great value for money, and i just love the idea of the multi scale neck. PS the usual great playing, too, guys.
That was the joke! Not very funny, I guess.... But I do usually watch the whole video and always think they're great, no reason this one should be any different :)
Are there issues using a capo? Do capos work any better around the seventh fret, where the frets are more conventionally perpendicular to the line of the neck, than they do nearer to the extreme ends of the fingerboard, where the angle of the frets is more pronounced? Or are there some designs of capo that work, and others that don't?
Would-be folk guitarist checking in - been on nothing but DADGAD (or CGCFGC on electric) for probably a year now! Would love to try one of these at some point...
Sounds very deep and rich, with a piano like bass. Just one thing---the Ibanez website makes no mention of solid woods so I think we can assume they are all laminate.
It's amazing that this amount of quality guitar can now be bought for less than £500! I'd love to compare the Ibanez to my Greenfield 1.2 to hear the tones :D
I wish they would make multiscale guitars with a straight nut and just the bridge being slanted... my index fingers are lean in naturally so I wouldn't be able to bar an F chord if the lower frets lean the other way.
Man, from certain angles (undoubtedly because I'm used to seeing the frets all lined up) those fretboards look like they're curling around a bit. Obviously just a trick of the eye, but weird none the less. Great playing as always!
Only normally watch the chappers and captain videos and some of the metal oriented sounds like, but damn that was a fine video and lovely playing, can't get past Pete's intense staring whilst playing though 😂
Man when they mentioned Charlie Hunter and what he played, playing on Continuum, I thought "Haha, yeah. 8 string guitarist jamming away on a blues album. Real funny." They weren't joking. Dude's sick.
Mick, that stretchy chord is why I also stopped learning Neon! Glad that I watched this video - these fanned fret guitars make me dizzy but it might just be the answer to playing those complex acoustic fingertyle songs!
I was a bit sceptical at first but these actually make a lot of sense. The whole fan-fret thing is still a bit scary to me, but i should really check these out. I think they are going to be a bit of a gateway drug though... Once you get used to one of these it's probably going to be hard to go back to a normal guitar
I'm wondering how hard/easy they are to work on? Are they harder to set up? Is the action easier to adjust? The concept makes sense but my mind is thinking old Martin/Taylor's and my eyes are seeing the 21st century... I'm somewhat unsure. Btw, I love the interaction between you gentlemen - talented and just fun to be around.
Welp...I found my acoustic! Been looking for one for a long time and haven't found one I really liked. These sound AWESOME, they're Ibanez (I'm a HUGE Ibanez fan...) and they're WAY cheaper than expected. DONE!!
+rmp5s I bought an Ibanez Artwood about ten years ago. Something about Ibanez acoustics, they have a thick backed neck that isn't wide fretwise that fits my hands perfectly, and they sound absolutely amazing, AND they aren't outrageously price. Point being, Ibanez is a great place to start looking for acoustics,

Kory De Leon I always LOVED the Artwood line...they look great, are priced right, etc...but I don't think they sound all that great. Every one I've played sounded a little on the dull side. Yours have a nice brightness and fullness?
This has put my mind at rest. I'm having a custom guitar built and it has evolved into a fanned fret guitar, and there was a part of me that was concerned I wouldn't be able to play it.
Fan fret seems kind of awesome. Although I think using medium strings helps if you're tuning down. I typically play in D and sometimes drop the low E to a C as well, and it's not bad with medium strings instead of light. These guitars sound kind of like made in China budget guitars tho, or is that because they're playing through the pickups?
god i love these videos. Am i right in thinking fan frets came about with ibanez 7 strings, prog metal that kinda thing. i can see real benefit for those who enjoy doing finger picked arrangements of songs as well
"Am i right in thinking fan frets came about with ibanez 7 strings, prog metal that kinda thing." ACTUALLY! I believe the patent was originally held by Novax, and it was intended more for jazz guitarists. A few small companies got on board later, like Strandberg and such, and those guys were definitely more geared to prog-metal, and Ibanez was one of the last companies to hop on the bandwagon.
+Travis Lausch yup. Agile been doing fanned frets for years no one bats an eye. when other big companies doing it like they have shocked of their life. 😂
Hello people. I made an electric multi-scale Bass and Guitar about 15 years ago, still got them. The strings are much more in balance, the intonation is much more accurate and therefore the guitar is much more in tune. It is the evolution of the guitar IMO.
Mick would make a good bluegrass picker, nice flat picking style. Mick put a Tony Rice CD on and start picking! I would like to have one of those guitars for the open tuning playing

Hi guys! Nice to see your again! Hmm, the neck to head transition after the nut looks weird to say the least. Kind of ruins the overall nice look of the guitar.
for a low budget, say $100-500 and youre looking for something new then Reverend guitars may be to your liking, if youre willing to spend some real money then go to your local guitar store and ask for a "gibson les paul" and pick one to your liking. billy joe armstrong uses single coils (think fender strat) and humbuckers (les paul) both have a different sound but both can easily make a green day sound
+Spamtaco64 I don't think you can get a Reverend for $100 or $500. At least not one that hasn't had its neck run over by a tour bus. And I definitely don't think anybody should be starting with a $3500 guitar. A low end Reverend Double Agent (P-90/HB) is about the same as a Les Paul Studio at $800-900. Going down market, a used Les Paul Jr. would land you in Billy Joe territory for $500. Or a new Made in Mexico HSS Stratocaster. Down towards $200, a Squier Bullet HSS Stratocaster. Or a down market manufacturer's super strat model with at least a bridge humbucker.
yeah I've been wondering about them, I've bought the Ibanez 8 string Nylon and it's just flawless, dream guitar to me, just wished they did an acoustic version :p
Well, I guess she saw me coming. I was lied to, and that's a fact. You see, I was in Key West some years ago, right after Hurricane Andrew, as a matter of fact, and walked into one of them T-shirt shops. A very pretty (a serious understatement there actually), 50-ish asian lady met me at the door. "You want a Hawaiian shirt" says herself. With stunning accuracy. "Yes I do" I admitted. "Look around, and when you give up, talk to me" she said, and left me alone. In the air behind her she left a faint trace of, um, enigma. Well, I looked around. There must have been hundreds of Hawaiian shirts there. Garish things, subtle things, beautiful things, and mostly, things I have never been drunk enough to wear in public. After making a show of independence, I gave up. "I don't know. Nothing calls to me. Am I missing something?" I asked her. "I have just the shirt for you. It has been waiting for you, and only you could wear it." She produced the shirt, and damn if she wasn't right. I bought it immediately, carried it home, convinced she was the great Hawaiian shirt whisperer. It has a cherished place in my closet to this day. And then I see she, or someone, sold the exact same shirt to the guy on the right in this video. Anyway, there is nothing cooler than rock and roll on acoustic guitars, and this is that. (referring to minute 28:40 in particular) Great job guys, and some lovely playing there. Thank you!
I like these and they sound pretty good but the bridge looks like crap. At least set up the middle of the bridge in the middle, they start this one on the bass string side and go in from there.
Blindtest! Blindfold Chappers & Lee, give them fanned frets guitars and see how long it takes before they actually notice!
I really like this idea. I would be very interested in watching that video.
Why have tehy not done that yet, that would be so great
Happens with home made multi scale guitars all the time. People play them then I ask them to look at the frets to see if they notice anything and it's like OMG......WTFFFFFF?????
That intro jam was just pure beautiful music.
The cap on the headstock should cover up to the nut on the treble end. That said it's pretty cool on its own.
I can't justify another guitar right now (I've got 6!) but I watch these vids just to hear Pete and Mick play! Also Pete had problems with a chord! OMG he is human after all - not a guitar god - now only a Demi-God! Lol Great to see and hear you together again guys
I could listen to these two play all day. It's nice to see people who play without a lot of old blues licks or shredding.

In fact, it was instantly more comfortable than standard frets. I also found they translated to bass very well. If I had the money, fanned frets are all I would play.
these guys have great synergy, that intro was fucking beautiful
You guys are hilarious and fun to watch. You guys should make a podcast. Also 20:00 very helpful when thinking about investing in a fan fret.
Yet again Mick and Pete's review comfirms why they do the best guitar videos on youtube by a country mile.
God I miss this duo on this channel. Guitar/acoustic paradiso was the best thing on the internet. Love, love, ❤️ these two together.
The fan to to me, makes it look like the neck is twisted
Truly AMAZING how easy the fan fret guitars are to play.
You think it's going to be weird but it all fits your fingers like they were made for it.

That fret reminds me of the time I tried to play guitar while tripping on acid.
120 micrograms
lol
i did that once and the guitar wrapped around my leg and it didnt even affect my playing. It was amazing,
Top 5 favorite jams of all time at the end there. Bravo...

Great demonstrations ideas and examples of Beautiful music...thanks
These guitars make my eyesight feel odd, as the distortion in shape is just weird.
Oh dear. I need one of theses.
Wow, this whole video was excellent!
It was just posted. There is no possible way that you know what the video is like
That was the joke! Not very funny, I guess.... But I do usually watch the whole video and always think they're great, no reason this one should be any different :)
yeah you fucking liar
At least you didn't say first. What a waste of a comment and most everyone hates you for doing it...

You've played very similar theme intro in video about Roland JC-40 Jazz Chorus 😉
I liked all the playing in this vid. great.
Would-be folk guitarist checking in - been on nothing but DADGAD (or CGCFGC on electric) for probably a year now! Would love to try one of these at some point...
How would slide playing work here?
Sounds very deep and rich, with a piano like bass. Just one thing---the Ibanez website makes no mention of solid woods so I think we can assume they are all laminate.
they sound so sweet. definitely gonna have to try
It's amazing that this amount of quality guitar can now be bought for less than £500! I'd love to compare the Ibanez to my Greenfield 1.2 to hear the tones :D
when Y'all plating in the pub again? that was fun to watch.
which video was that from?
it was a review of the Laney battery powered P.A. very cool
cool! Thanks!
I wish they would make multiscale guitars with a straight nut and just the bridge being slanted... my index fingers are lean in naturally so I wouldn't be able to bar an F chord if the lower frets lean the other way.
Very interesting demo.....Love to see a demo of some Resonator Guitars
Man, from certain angles (undoubtedly because I'm used to seeing the frets all lined up) those fretboards look like they're curling around a bit. Obviously just a trick of the eye, but weird none the less. Great playing as always!
Danish Pete could make a baked bean can sound good... bloody lovely playing!
Only normally watch the chappers and captain videos and some of the metal oriented sounds like, but damn that was a fine video and lovely playing, can't get past Pete's intense staring whilst playing though 😂
My question would be, when you get used to the Fan Fret, does it screw you up when you grab a regular guitar?
You guys are such fun!
Man when they mentioned Charlie Hunter and what he played, playing on Continuum, I thought "Haha, yeah. 8 string guitarist jamming away on a blues album. Real funny."
They weren't joking. Dude's sick.
Would love to hear a Jim Croce duet on those guitars by these guys.
I do miss you two guys together. Any chance of a reunion?
Mick, that stretchy chord is why I also stopped learning Neon! Glad that I watched this video - these fanned fret guitars make me dizzy but it might just be the answer to playing those complex acoustic fingertyle songs!

how much would something like that cost in Australian $ ?
Mick did quite a good job on Neon btw! I have tried (and failed) to learn that song multiple times now... maybe next time? :p
Welp...I found my acoustic! Been looking for one for a long time and haven't found one I really liked. These sound AWESOME, they're Ibanez (I'm a HUGE Ibanez fan...) and they're WAY cheaper than expected. DONE!!
bought the Ibanez 12string with the maple front ....love the sound ... acoustic / electric
Awesome, man! I'll have to check those out if I see one in the stores!

Are these 2 guitars the same model? It seems that Mick holds the "smaller" version or something O_O
I once knew a girl named Pandora... but I never got into her box..
trust me you don't want to
This has put my mind at rest. I'm having a custom guitar built and it has evolved into a fanned fret guitar, and there was a part of me that was concerned I wouldn't be able to play it.

Jackson also has a prototype SLAT FF model.
+Travis Lausch yup. Agile been doing fanned frets for years no one bats an eye. when other big companies doing it like they have shocked of their life. 😂
Well, Agile has a bad reputation to some (not me, I own a 6-string bass from Rondo Music and it's pretty good!), so I tend not to count them.
Mick, evenflow at the end?
any selmer style guitars?
what party piece tune was mick playing in dadgad tuning
Hello! It's a piece I wrote a few years ago - pretty much the only thing I can play in DADGAD. Cheers!
And now I see why Andy McKee uses one. Dang, been looking for a sound like this forever...
At 27.08 was Mick playing even flow?
Probably! I love that song. :0)
Does this work with any set of strings?
Weird optical illusion - the necks look like they're twisted. They sound nice, though!
Can anyone tell me (or show me!!!) how it is for slide-players to play fanned fret?
Hello people. I made an electric multi-scale Bass and Guitar about 15 years ago, still got them. The strings are much more in balance, the intonation is much more accurate and therefore the guitar is much more in tune. It is the evolution of the guitar IMO.
How many frets do they have?
What is that john Mayer's song plz ?
I had one of these! Really cool guitars for the cash.
What song are thy playing
Mick would make a good bluegrass picker, nice flat picking style. Mick put a Tony Rice CD on and start picking! I would like to have one of those guitars for the open tuning playing
I am surprised that ergonomics is not one of the key points highlighted here. My understanding is that the concept originated more on the idea of making playing more comfortable than anything else. Personally, when I learned about this years ago.. I also was thinking.. man.. bends must be easier as well...anyway. I do believe ergonomics are an important factor that should be stressed. .. and since I never played one.. was really curious to know if indeed things like bar chords up and down the neck felt more natural or not. not to mention just soloing .. the movements should be more natural as the fan follows how we move our hand up and down the neck
What string gauge is recommended for this?
well im gonna go n try n learn neon now :/
I picked up a fanned fret last week. All I can say is, why did I wait so long.
Great vid! I think these would maybe be improved with a slightly different set of strings.
Hi guys! Nice to see your again! Hmm, the neck to head transition after the nut looks weird to say the least. Kind of ruins the overall nice look of the guitar.
YES MICK IS BACK
At the end, Pete should have sung: "He had a frog in his throat, and then he croaked!"
What are the scale lengths...in american that is.
google it you lazy
They said it in the beginning
0.00026 football fields...
whats the first song they played together?
It's very similar to Pray Your Gods by Toad the Wet Sprocket if you want to check it out
I think they just make it up as they go. I think "Noodlerama Sunrise" would make a good title for that first jam.
It's a jam on the basic progression of the chorus of Who Can It Be Now by Men At Work
"Noodlerama Sunrise", now I like that! It could be used for the first jam every vid.
kind of optical illusion viewed from the front, the neck looks twisted.
new mic? sounds different :)
I can play neon quite well, actually
It took me months to get the technique down
The fingering is easy, the execution is just hard as hell
Can anyone recommend a first eletric guitarra for me? I mostly play stuff like green day
your budget?
for a low budget, say $100-500 and youre looking for something new then Reverend guitars may be to your liking, if youre willing to spend some real money then go to your local guitar store and ask for a "gibson les paul" and pick one to your liking. billy joe armstrong uses single coils (think fender strat) and humbuckers (les paul) both have a different sound but both can easily make a green day sound

Even Flow...nice.
I must buy one....
Oh my 😍
glad i'm not the only one that struggles with neon
damn they should make 7 and 8 string of theses :) 11/10 would buy
Agile sells 7 and 8 string multiscale acoustic guitars :) just check rondos website
yeah I've been wondering about them, I've bought the Ibanez 8 string Nylon and it's just flawless, dream guitar to me, just wished they did an acoustic version :p
Yes and put the sound hole in the back...
they seem to have a piezo quack about them...maybe the preamp is in need of an upgrade?
Well, I guess she saw me coming. I was lied to, and that's a fact.

scorchio,channel andertons...great video...
Groovy guitars, and it's likely no one else on the block has one.
The necks are longer
agile makes fanned fret acoustics with 8 strings, like actual added lower strings like on electrics.... try them! :P
Pete got very excited about the barre chords his little face
I like these and they sound pretty good but the bridge looks like crap. At least set up the middle of the bridge in the middle, they start this one on the bass string side and go in from there.
You guys should get Charlie Hunter in!
'Drunk paradiso' would be fun! XD please do it!!!
tomorrow im going to get really high then pop round to anderton's and try one..
They're actually fanned fret and multiscale. They're two different things, and you can have one without the other.
hmm? what's with mick's voice? lots of sibilance there...
Looks like they're trying new lapel mics
ahh i see...
How does this guitar sound unplugged? Thats the million dollar question.
Cant they just release a goddamn 7 string fanned fret prestige model already??!
680mm= 26.77", 635mm= 25"
Thank you.
Can I just say Pete looks like Leo DiCaprio (or whatever his name is)? People probably said this ages ago though
