FURANO 富良野 FREERIDE; Benefits of a quiver?

  • Season 2021/22 had been a fairly slow start by Hokkaido standards. This changed with a huge low pressure system that parked itself over the island and brought constant snowfall for three days straight.
Furano now has more snow than it has had in the last forty years.
During the storm, we had seen a lot of wind and fairly warm temperatures. Probably not conducive to the powder turns that we usually experience as the snow was quite dense, but it was exactly the storm that we needed for completely covering the off-piste terrain and making it in condition to ski and freeride safely.
Near the end of the storm I met Ken who is a local Australian expat also living in Furano. Unfortunately the gondola did not operate due to strong winds, which limited the terrain that we were able to access.
We discussed the benefit of having a quiver of snowboards and skis. Ken and I are in different camps with regards to having a quiver at your disposal. Ken has by last count about 20 snowboards that he will use depending on the snow and terrain he is riding. I have one set of skis that I will use through the winter season and will not change these over until the spring season.
The skis which I use are Volkl Katanas, which have a waist width of 113mm and mounted with tech bindings. They are flat underfoot and have a small amount of tip and tail rocker. I can use these skis in all terrain and conditions, and while it may not excel in all conditions, it is a very good all-round ski for Hokkaido winters.
