When using clay like that, in ceramics too, you score each side of what you're sticking and then add slip to help join them. Slip is basically a glue made from the clay by taking the clay and watering it down into a paste. It'll help stick it all together and have a less likelihood to break

Agreed. In dry - very dry - environment, I'd dampen paper towel and loosely wrap clay, then place wrapped item in a plastic bag kinda' closed, but still open. Check item periodically, and if cracks forming or uneven drying, sprits with water and gently smooth. or prop bag open to speed drying, as needed.
The entire video I was thinking "oh no, she gonna be disappointed when everything is gonna fall apart in the end, because those methods don't work with natural clay" I love working with natural clay, but the methods are just really different from the clay you're used to.
As some of the other comments say, you need to score and slip when attaching two pieces. Basically scratch both sides of the clay your attaching and add a little water in between them
so i work with clay a lot, but i’m a ceramic artist so i don’t work with polymer clay. but from my experience and how you described the clay i wonder if it would survive a kiln firing. this clay seems to be just straight from the ground, and might be a stoneware clay. also you were painting it in the bonedry phase, which is when it is at its most fragile. when clay enters bonedry it’s totally normal for it to shirk some since all the water is leaving the clay body. you were doing great scoring and slipping your work but no matter how much you do it to the wooden base, it’s not going to stay/not crack. wood sucks up moisture from clay pretty quickly and it caused the base to dry unevenly and crack, clay really doesn’t like bonding with anything but itself.

Something to help your individual added on details (the under belly, the legs, the head, etc) is by making a slip solution. You literally just mash up clay with a bunch of water, and as you score the clay, apply the solution before sticking the on details. Another thing to avoid your clay from breaking while it’s being fired in a kiln, or an oven, is to make the fugue hollow. But you have to make a puncture site so the hot air inside the hollow clay piece can escape without exploding the figure. Edit: I’ve also used that brand of clay before and I can confirm it’s terrible and not worth wasting time and energy on. I tried absolutely everything to prevent it from cracking and falling apart. It’s just a bad clay in all honestly. You’re better off spending a lot more money on high quality clay than the cheaper alternative.
You had the same advice I did! Have you used DAS clay? I always wanted to try it but it was really expensive so my parents wouldn't get it for me to try. I recently found some DAS kids' clay, and I grabbed some white and some green. Haven't used the green yet, but my 4yo used the white to make "fossils" by pressing toy dinosaurs into lumps of it. It hardened really nicely.
Yes, I agree with all of these points/tips! I've studies ceramics and sculpting with clay for 2 years now and I can say that these tips right here usually do the trick, expessially with using the slip solution to stick on details.

Jackie, this is pottery clay. Meaning it goes into many stages: plastic, leather hard, bone dry, bisque ware, and glaze ware. Your piece was at bone dry which is very brittle and prone to braking. It has to go in a kiln and get fired for it to be strong-and it shrinks as you saw, because water.
When you scored it, did you make sure to score both pieces? You're supposed to, and scoring is supposed to look more like your grass texture with random lines. You're also supposed to add a little water from the tip of your finger on both scored sides, and once you put the pieces together you still have to blend them together. I hope this helps you (whomever reads this) understand this style of a clay a bit better.
This is because this type of clay is not the best for details. It is bad for making small pieces since they crack and dry quickly but it is perfect for projects with a big size. It is also good for textures. It works best as a single big piece

@NerdECrafter a simple trick that I use when I make stuff out of a clay that is similar to this (ceramic clay) is I rub water into my hand periodically to keep them moist and hydrated so my hands don't absorb the water from the clay as quickly. Also it's a good idea to keep a spray bottle on hand if you want to work on another part of the same project. If the clay peices come a part after it dries, add just a little bit of vinegar to both pieces and let them bubble up a bit, then press the two pieces together firmly. PS. I really love your videos!
Yoooo Jackie, this "air dry clay" seems to be acting a lot more like standard mixed pottery clay. The soft but firm out of the package is akin to a stage of clay called Plastic. This is the darkest in color most moldable and fixable of the stages. The white on your hands is par of the course as your hands will suck out any moisture that the clay has while working with it. It's best to have a spray bottle on stand by to keep all parts of your piece evenly moist. Even the base. Another thing abt pottery clay is that it won't just stick to each other like polymer clays. It needs to be scored and smoothed to the base then re-carved out from there. While yeah you'll lose some of your sick grass texture, this is how this type of clay works. You can be cheeky and have toothpick stand inserts but both pieces of the project have to be Plastic for them to dry properly. The complete crumble at the end is due to the moisture levels being different at the end. Its a terrible way to lose your time but it was a sick sculpt while it lasted my guy. Heres to the next one built upon your learnings from this :D!

I actually did make a dragon in Ceramics class, although he also broke a good amount, and I really did notice the differences in how working with it felt, especially with how much I needed to score the clay for it to stick. It definitely helped to keep my hands damp but not to over water the clay, which I think is why you got the soap texture. Also namewise, (I'm sorry for odd spelling) maybe something like Anyshia, Anagma, or Maya? Idk I'm just throwing random stuff out XD

I dont want to be mean, but: "Jackie you did it wrong!" Natural clay is really special, and you must have some experience with it, it is sooo much different than polymer clay, natural clay can be fired which makes your piece much stronger, every piece of the sculpture has to blended together together, that is why the legs and other parts of your dragon fell off. But if you know how to work with it, natural clay can be an amazing material to work with. But it was your first time working with it, you did great, i didn't know these things when i first started working with natural clay. Pls just like so Jackie can see!!!👍👍👍

I was like ANGRY when I saw the base started crumbling, like "HOW DARE YOU, CLAAAAY!" but then when the dragon broke I wanted to cry! I think your sculpture is definitely cute! You are very talented!
This looks and acts just like the clay we used in pottery class in high school. You had to air dry it first and it turned much lighter but it also became extremely brittle. After it was completely dried out you then put it in a kiln and it made the clay much stronger. I think the packaging mislead you greatly by telling you that you only needed to let it air dry.
Yea it definately works a lot like the clay I used in pottery class too (except ours was this weird orange color) I don't know how Jackie kept her cool, I would've literally cried
I always work a bit of lotion or hand cream into air dry clay when I work with it. Usually I'll coat my hands well and then knead the clay and reapply the lotion thickly to my palms once worked into the clay. For every egg or golfball worth of clay, maybe a quarter of a teaspoon of lotion. May not work for everyone, but it seems to extend drying time nicely, makes the clay more supple and workable, less cracks once dry, and I'm able to get more fine details into the piece.
Lol I use to use this clay for high school projects alot. I learned all the stuff that you did plus the $1rama brush that youu got were for watercolour paints. Red is watercolour. Black is for acrylic. And when it came to painting I hate that I soak up the paint so I just used a transparent Gesso. The Gesso gave it a thin coats like a skin, so it was less likely to break, what it did decide to break, E3600 was my friend at the time. You could use super glue but I find that stuff s pain.

I'm wondering if you just encountered a really bad batch. I bought some of this a few months ago despite having never sculpted because hey, what the heck. I was super impressed with it. I sculpted a jackalope out of it and was really impressed with how it held its shape and texture. Its dry now and I only had one issue with cracking, and it was in a particularly thin and oddly shaped area of one of the antlers.
Jackie you can make something called airdry slip to fill in any cracks :) You put small amounts of clay and mix it with water till you get a clay paste and fill in the cracks and crevices. Iam going to be making a big dragon using air dry clay and cant thank you enough for the inspiration :D
The kilns that you bake this type of clay are electrically powered. Baking the clay with direct fire is called Raku, which is a whole other discipline in ceramics.
Tip: scoring is a good tactic but also use it for all attachments like the feathery thingys with slip it’s a extremely watery and liquidity clay and water mixture that will help it stick
Something my mom and I used to do when using cheap air dry clay was mixing Elmer's glue into the clay alongside small amounts of water to keep it flexible and prevent cracking. I remember it worked pretty lovely.

Here’s some helpful hinds I wish I had when working with air dry clay. If you want to take your time use a damp paper towel to wrap your project in. Keeps the clay nice and damp. And I like having either a wet towel or more wet paper towels for my hands. To help with the cracking. And not allowing my hands to get white and dry. For the sake of what Jackie knows and for her talent I believe she did well. Way way better then me. I don’t do dragons. But I love to watch your crafting videos. Okay, I have some experience with natural clay so I'll give my tips. As many have said, slipping and scoring is a big need! Especially if you do not smooth out the pieces to make one solid form (I've cheated when smoothing pieces together because usually the smoothed part can hold it). But, with the style, slipping and scoring is a must. For scoring, we'd usually use a serrated scraper tool or a fork to lightly brush lines into the clay. Not too deep, but enough to hold slip. Slip is just a mash of water and clay that can be applied via hand or with a brush. Now I've never really seen natural clay that didn't have to be put in a kiln. Of course, different brands have different makeups, so I'm likely wrong. That being said I don't understand how they can say it wouldn't shrink. Shrinking is a big issue! And I've never found a type of natural clay that doesn't shrink. Even my own animal models have areas where the shrinking is obvious. For example, my dog-like model had a normal snout when he went into the kiln, but it bottlenecked when it came out. I think this is due to the clay have such a high amount of water in it, that when the water is taken out it just compresses. Now I am surprised the dragon didn't just break because of the tinfoil, because I had been warned that natural clay would just break around anything inside of it. Seems not to be the case here!

When you're working with clay, you're going to have to make a slurry to use as glue. clay isn't going to stick together well just from water.

Natural clay is really special, and you must have some experience with it, it is sooo much different than polymer clay, natural clay can be fired which makes your piece much stronger, every piece of the sculpture has to blended together together, that is why the legs and other parts of your dragon fell off.
But if you know how to work with it, natural clay can be an amazing material to work with. But it was your first time working with it, you did great, i didn't know these things when i first started working with natural clay.

This looks and acts just like the clay we used in pottery class in high school. You had to air dry it first and it turned much lighter but it also became extremely brittle. After it was completely dried out you then put it in a kiln and it made the clay much stronger. I think the packaging mislead you greatly by telling you that you only needed to let it air dry.

I always work a bit of lotion or hand cream into air dry clay when I work with it. Usually I'll coat my hands well and then knead the clay and reapply the lotion thickly to my palms once worked into the clay. For every egg or golfball worth of clay, maybe a quarter of a teaspoon of lotion. May not work for everyone, but it seems to extend drying time nicely, makes the clay more supple and workable, less cracks once dry, and I'm able to get more fine details into the piece.

Lol I use to use this clay for high school projects alot. I learned all the stuff that you did plus the $1rama brush that youu got were for watercolour paints. Red is watercolour. Black is for acrylic. And when it came to painting I hate that I soak up the paint so I just used a transparent Gesso. The Gesso gave it a thin coats like a skin, so it was less likely to break, what it did decide to break, E3600 was my friend at the time. You could use super glue but I find that stuff s pain.

I'm wondering if you just encountered a really bad batch. I bought some of this a few months ago despite having never sculpted because hey, what the heck. I was super impressed with it. I sculpted a jackalope out of it and was really impressed with how it held its shape and texture. Its dry now and I only had one issue with cracking, and it was in a particularly thin and oddly shaped area of one of the antlers.
I've never found an air dry clay I liked... I really felt the pain when she fell off the base!! 😬

Jackie you can make something called airdry slip to fill in any cracks :) You put small amounts of clay and mix it with water till you get a clay paste and fill in the cracks and crevices.

jackie this clay is actually the one used for pottery and it needs to be baked but not in electric ovens but fire ones😉
The kilns that you bake this type of clay are electrically powered. Baking the clay with direct fire is called Raku, which is a whole other discipline in ceramics.

Tip: scoring is a good tactic but also use it for all attachments like the feathery thingys with slip it’s a extremely watery and liquidity clay and water mixture that will help it stick

Something my mom and I used to do when using cheap air dry clay was mixing Elmer's glue into the clay alongside small amounts of water to keep it flexible and prevent cracking. I remember it worked pretty lovely.

Here’s some helpful hinds I wish I had when working with air dry clay. If you want to take your time use a damp paper towel to wrap your project in. Keeps the clay nice and damp. And I like having either a wet towel or more wet paper towels for my hands. To help with the cracking. And not allowing my hands to get white and dry.
For the sake of what Jackie knows and for her talent I believe she did well. Way way better then me. I don’t do dragons. But I love to watch your crafting videos. They’ve helped me so much in the last year and half.

Okay, I have some experience with natural clay so I'll give my tips.
As many have said, slipping and scoring is a big need! Especially if you do not smooth out the pieces to make one solid form (I've cheated when smoothing pieces together because usually the smoothed part can hold it). But, with the style, slipping and scoring is a must. For scoring, we'd usually use a serrated scraper tool or a fork to lightly brush lines into the clay. Not too deep, but enough to hold slip. Slip is just a mash of water and clay that can be applied via hand or with a brush.
Now I've never really seen natural clay that didn't have to be put in a kiln. Of course, different brands have different makeups, so I'm likely wrong. That being said I don't understand how they can say it wouldn't shrink. Shrinking is a big issue! And I've never found a type of natural clay that doesn't shrink. Even my own animal models have areas where the shrinking is obvious. For example, my dog-like model had a normal snout when he went into the kiln, but it bottlenecked when it came out. I think this is due to the clay have such a high amount of water in it, that when the water is taken out it just compresses.
Now I am surprised the dragon didn't just break because of the tinfoil, because I had been warned that natural clay would just break around anything inside of it. Seems not to be the case here!
