For a long time I thought Germany's responsibility for their past is a little too much. Until I realised that other countries with a difficult past do too little. The US in particular where it's okay to have symbols in public that stands for the dark past. Germany is on the right path.

Without the missing comments, my post comes off as odd and unhinged. But when you consider at the time around a year ago, Japan was strongly supporting Ukraine right alongside the US, UK, Europe, and South Korea (and still is), it makes more sense that Russian bots would be out in full force trashing Japan - and I was probably just responding to the usual historically-inaccurate hyperbole and rudeness of the trolls. My comment is not directly addressing the OP. And of course all nations have things in the past for which they must atone - including Japan, especially when it comes to China and Korea. *Edited to add: The talk was about each nation facing our OWN wrongdoings (genocide, colonization, slavery, war, ethnic cleansing, etc.). Thank you for putting the current conflict in Ukraine into historical context. It takes courage to stand in front of a global audience including many German intellectuals and remind everyone of their part in colonial genocides of the past. Especially striking for me was the connection between American expansion into its western frontier with Hitler's attempt to conquer and colonize Ukraine.
How easy is to blame Germany which lost the war. Nobody will contradict. The fact that US and UK accepted the border of Soviet Union of 1939 is not an issue. The main culprit in this case is Germany. @@ssir5927 Historically inaccurate. There were Jews in Ukraine even before the Vikings founded Kiev. In Polish Ukraine only Poles could own property. In a country which was largely illiterate, educated Ukranians, many of whom were Jewish, found work managing property, farms, businesses and especially bars. You may be incorrectly referring to the conditions of the transfer of "Ukraine" from Lithuania to Poland, as in all Lithuanian territory Poles (non-Lithuanians) were not allowed to own lands, which obviously changed once Ukraine was transferred from Lithuania to the Polish Crown, all still within the same overall state union.

Of course nothing new for you, but I can assure your, starting on from the Austrian Border to the western end of the EU the people completely forgot about this. My grandfather fought in WWII and remembered the "Ukrainian Kornkammer" pretty well, for my father, the world ended geographically and historically at the iron curtain. Please, look closely at map. Stalingrad (which is now known as Volgograd) is located in less than 300km of the border of Ukraine. The reason why german army was going towards this city and didn’t stop on the border is simply because of quite unique geography of this lend. Ukraine is located majorly on the wast lands of the “European plain” - an open area which lacks natural barriers for any potential invader to cross this land. In historical and military terms this exact feature is the reason why Ukraine has been always tied up in conflicts between major forces invading this land either from east or west, south or north. Now, the Volga river on contrary represents exactly such massive natural barrier in that part of front. The only one river that can play the same role is Dnipro, which basically divides Ukraine in two (and which has been used by germans in the first part of invasion). So if you’re planning to occupy Ukraine, you would eventually go all the way to the east, towards Volgograd to establish well protected and fortified border for your occupied land masses. Plus it helps when you need to establish a “safe belt” between Soviets and your occupied land. And in this instance those extra 300km would play major role in keeping an essential land (which is Ukraine) well protected from the interferences of the front.

From the Volga on, the steppes transform into a kind of desertic land not suitable for agriculture. So the argument of Pr Snyder is not exactly contradictory with that part of history.

For a long time I thought Germany's responsibility for their past is a little too much. Until I realised that other countries with a difficult past do too little. The US in particular where it's okay to have symbols in public that stands for the dark past. Germany is on the right path.

Without the missing comments, my post comes off as odd and unhinged. But when you consider at the time around a year ago, Japan was strongly supporting Ukraine right alongside the US, UK, Europe, and South Korea (and still is), it makes more sense that Russian bots would be out in full force trashing Japan - and I was probably just responding to the usual historically-inaccurate hyperbole and rudeness of the trolls.

In Polish Ukraine only Poles could own property. In a country which was largely illiterate, educated Ukranians, many of whom were Jewish, found work managing property, farms, businesses and especially bars. This is a common occurence in all colonies.

Of course nothing new for you, but I can assure your, starting on from the Austrian Border to the western end of the EU the people completely forgot about this. It was about Ukraine, this is not Mr. Snyders assertion, this is what the Nazis very openly said.
Please, look closely at map. Stalingrad (which is now known as Volgograd) is located in less than 300km of the border of Ukraine. The reason why german army was going towards this city and didn’t stop on the border is simply because of quite unique geography of this lend. Ukraine is located majorly on the wast lands of the “European plain” - an open area which lacks natural barriers for any potential invader to cross this land. In historical and military terms this exact feature is the reason why Ukraine has been always tied up in conflicts between major forces invading this land either from east or west, south or north.
Now, the Volga river on contrary represents exactly such massive natural barrier in that part of front. The only one river that can play the same role is Dnipro, which basically divides Ukraine in two (and which has been used by germans in the first part of invasion). So if you’re planning to occupy Ukraine, you would eventually go all the way to the east, towards Volgograd to establish well protected and fortified border for your occupied land masses. Plus it helps when you need to establish a “safe belt” between Soviets and your occupied land. And in this instance those extra 300km would play major role in keeping an essential land (which is Ukraine) well protected from the interferences of the front.
It was Ukraine Breadbasket and Caucasan oil fields. Both important, therefore Stalingrad iso Moscow. Ukraine (in the sense of land of Ukrainians) at that time was, by the way, not yet outlined with a border. A lot of Ukrainian were living in the Rostov and Sotchi area, closer to the Caucasus. They have been deported by Stalin later after the war.
In general by Ukraine the German probably meant all the fertile lands in the Dniestr-Dniepr-Don area.
A last point is that while the oil field were important for autosufficiency, those areas were less liveable as "lebensraum" than present day Ukraine. From the Volga on, the steppes transform into a kind of desertic land not suitable for agriculture.
So the argument of Pr Snyder is not exactly contradictory with that part of history.
If you have listened attentively to Snyder's speech you would hear him addressing this point - hitler did not plan to occupy more than 10% of russia. & even though Russians suffered massively in that, but they were not the major victims during that war, as they claim now. But for decades russians claim the victimhood status, demand all sorts of benefits for it and, at the same time, deny this for other nations.
