    I am German. And I am angry. We still have to talk to other Germans who say: Ukraine can't win, Ukraine's interests are not our interests, what if we freeze in the Winter, Ukraine is so corrupt, and how can you be sure that most Ukrainians really want to fight to defend their country? I am trying to use some of prof Snyder's arguments to counter. I am NOT a historian. I have very little idea. But it strikes me that history can be turned this way or that way to give arguments to any side. So in the end I will have make up my own mind. Don't we all wish, that we did not have to deal with this shitshow, most of all Ukrainians. But simply. In this war I can only be with Ukraine.

    • @Namuchat
      @Namuchat Год назад

      What does "being with Ukraine" actually mean? According to RD Precht (referring to Max Weber's concept of Gesinnungsethik), the phase of war in which we are now is no longer about intentions. It's all about victory or defeat. A Ukrainian victory would mean pushing the Russian army back behind the front lines before february 24th (before 2014 for some...); the victory of the Russians would mean that they go on taking more Ukrainian territory bit by bit...

      @@Namuchat looks like it, doesn't it. I would like to see it this way. I would be committed to send all the weapons I had. Everything I can give. And I would want to keep money ready for a rebuilding of this country that Europe has not seen before. Was I anti Russian before? I never hated Russia. I did not like Putin at all though, over the last 10 years that guy just showed signs that made you think wtf. And recently I was treated to what national channels say about Europe and Germany at 8 pm prime viewing times! They made us out to be: sick, deprived, unnatural, spineless, greedy and do on ....which is of course in part is what we are...but the examples they use and how they sell stories is...absurd. the west never did that....show me the most anti Putin / Russia channel in Europe and we can compare Europe's Dorset with russian mainstream! I think Russia should not win. Ukraine is by no means perfect. But to hey are not the aggressor. Russia is.

      NATO:!! ADMIT UKRAINE NOW!! Despite Ukraine defending an aggression, at war, despite article 5. Look at it this way: the moment article 5 kicks in, Russia will have to go home. It is unable to fight a larger war.
      The war ends with negotiations over reparations & the colossal rebuilding of Ukraine. 339 cultural sites bombed-museums libraries universities monasteries churches; 4000 schools, hospitals everywhere. Ukrainians’ homes.
      Russia needs to pay cash to every Ukrainian citizen whose house or apartment was bombed, should be forced to pay cash to every family that has lost a Hero. Forced to pay the 500 families whose children have been killed or wounded. A trust fund for every single kidnapped child after all are returned.
      Putin must be arrested, w his merry gang of crazy talkers & killers: peskov medvedev Lavrov Gerasimov Prigozhin, shoigu. All war crimes by every Russian soldier must be prosecuted by the world.
      If the above all sounds pie in the sky, it is the only way this must end. It is one year later, after this brilliant talk, many many thousands of young, innocent, talented soldiers and Ukrainians who were just going about their lives who have now no lives to live. This is a travesty. If NATO is anything it must solve the daily atrocities being perpetrated upon an innocent population and a democratic government, despite Putin’s fantasy wish fulfillment!
      As Professor Snyder reminds us, President Zelenskyy won with 72 % of the vote!!

    Russia has always ached under various tyrannies.
    Ukraine is one country that struggles to be a democratic republic. It is an inspiration for everyone who values freedom and human agency.
    No matter how deep its roots may be in the institutions of any nation, democracy is NEVER guaranteed. And democracy is never valued by all people - even in nations that pridefully proclaim themselves to be “freedom loving” democracies. Democracy is alway attacked and resisted, and not only by oligarchs.
    One important thrust of Snider’s work is to re-emphasize the links between empire and tyranny. One way the two are entwined is how “empire” confuses (perverts) our sense of patriotism when you grow up in an imperial center (France, England, Russia, China, the US etc)
    If democracy fails in the US (as it may well) our “investments” in empire will be one of the causes.

    Beautifully succinct take on the history of Ukraine and the larger region. Although I much prefer Mearsheimers take on the reality of the current geopolitical situtation.
    Also the closing remarks towards global warming and empire seemed silly to me. On a per capita basis its the west not the Russians who pollute to scale. It's the west who redefined empire in the 20th century and lead to the geopolitical situtation of stagnation and private equity domination we currently have before us.

There where “elected” 6 presidents each one came to power as millionaires and left billionaires, Zelensky is not exception. They sold national companies, all fertile earth, all weapons arsenal; fighter jets, ships, tanks and vehicles to all war zones from 1991 till today; Yugoslavia, African and Asian conflicts. 15 millions Ukrainian citizens fled country because they where jobless poor and not protected . Ukraine has reputation as one of most corrupted country in the world. All what Ukraine won it was Eurovision song contest as sympathy because of the war. Nothing positive in Ukraine.
