Guardiola & Ronaldo had a special connection

  • Ronaldo Nazario would only play one season in Barcelona. However, Guardiola and Ronaldo would form a deadly partnership. They seemed to understand each other very well on the pitch, especially in this game. Guardiola was always a step ahead of everybody else, he had a quick mind. Therefore he didn’t need to take many touches on the ball.

      @mick3501 Год назад +44

      @@mynameis6575 the offside rule favoured the defending team more back then (1997?) than now. Any part of the attacker's body (not just a goalscoring part) could be deemed offside and there was a stricter interpretation of what interfering with play is, compared to now. In essence, it was easier to catch the other team offside and so an aggressive high line was an effective weapon, when applied competently.

    • @nsoper19
      @nsoper19 Год назад +30

      @@mynameis6575 exactly as Mick said. The interfering with play rule didn't really exist and so it was much harder to beat the offside trap. Now the rule has changed defenses all sit much deeper. This creates more space in the middle of the park, hence the death of 442 and 5 in midfield being the norm.

      People like to say that guardiola was a average player but not he was the Busquets of his time, even more Busquets is the guardiola of today because now we get use to see good playing architect in that role but back then that position was only for two types of players the Vieiras tall and strong or the Gatussos small, fast and aggressives.
      Guardiola back then was a unique player

    He doesnt have very good pass or vision or anticipation or technique, he had it all at extraordinary, outsanding level... He is, with De La Pena and Xavi, the best through ball passer and overall passer of all time... I watched all of them live and i remember that all experts back then(90s) were saying that pep and De la pena invented the trough balls- they were so good and so better than anyone else... at their level was only Xavi(and Iniesta) later... and yes, i know that i mention all barca players, but it is because of barca style of play, grond play, using the space perfectly and through balls... In Italy(there was some magnificent passers too) and especially England football was only long balls without thinking...
