Some automotive designers like Mr. Welburn remained with the same company their entire career...but that was not always typical. Low level designers for the major automotive manufacturers tended to move around a lot...because it was relatively easy to get hired anywhere if you had talent. Mentors would often encourage their design subordinates to follow them to a different company. Some designers would even begin their careers with a major car company...only to leave and work in product design in a non-automotive field. An entry level car designer years ago would often be tasked to create designs for wheel covers or taillights...with the overall design of an upcoming new car being the responsibility of those much higher in the hierarchy. Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell were the first two design geniuses at General Motors...but they were also tyrants and their behavior would not be tolerated now. At one time, GM offered lifetime job security if you worked hard for them...but their drastic downsizing over the last few decades has made that tenuous.

I’m a Corvette lady and at 74, I’ve never rode in a Corvette.
When I retired, I was planning to purchase one. My ex-husband and my son called a meeting to convince me that I didn’t need to purchase a Corvette.
Six months later I brought a brand new Cadillac SRX SUV.❤❤❤

Thank you for highlighting Mr. Ed Welburn's 44 year career with GM. His contribution to the automotive industry is incredible and very admirable. I can't wait to see the shoes he's designing.

A modern historical figure people need to know. I've met him a couple of times and he has a gentle soul. His spirit reminds me that of a priest. Nice report my NABJ sista.

At 4:20 you see his gorgeous fedora hat embellished with a ribbon which is actually in the colours and style of the flag of The Republic of Botswana. 👏😃

Mr. Welburn was indeed responsible for some modern classic designs that revived GM in the marketplace. He is an incredibly talented designer who rose to the very top of his profession. Great to see that he is still swinging for the fences!

Now if they can just get them to be as reliable and durable as Asian cars then they could be king.

Maybe they should work on reliability first!

the problem at GM today is not how the vehicles look. it's that the dealerships are, in general, a true disaster zone - nasty, unpleasant places. And, monolithic GM does not care. We had the worst vehicle experience of our lives last week, at "Chevrolet of Milford", and we told GM and they don't care. I think the company may be going down the drain again.

If you look at the late 70’s, 80’s and 90’s that was a dark day for automotive design. The worst designs ever to come out of Detroit. Those cars are in junk yards awaiting the crusher. Certainly not in any car collectors garage. Just ugly pieces of junk. European designers weren’t much better. Look at how ugly BMW were along with the 928 Porsche. Today the 2005 mustang set the stage for beautiful designs again along with the current C8. It’s a pleasure to see beauty again coming out of Detroit.

No. I think some of his designs were not good, such as his Cadillac design language.

You are out of touch with your viewers. How about a show on someone who is bringing reasonably priced vehicles back? Going in debt for many years just to have a vehicle is criminal. They could lower prices now if they would just stop handing out hundreds of thousands and even billions of dollars to their corporate shareholders and the executives. Maybe fire a few those.

Not Only Do ALL The New Cars Over The Last 20-Years Cars Look TERRIBLE, But They Are UGLY, EVIL Looking And Downright HIDEIOUS. Reflected In The ANGRY Attitude People Have Developed Right Along With It. The Guy Should Be Stripped Of His Pension And Living On The Street For The HORRIBLE TREND He Had A Hand In Inspiring... THUMBS DOWN Indeed...

Is he the man GM hired away from Ferrari? The man responsible for doing away with the pop-up headlights, and making the Corvette as beautiful as she was in her Stingray iteration? I L❤️‍🔥VE that guy, assuming he is the one I am thinking of…it was maybe 2004? I saw a documentary about it.🔥🔥🔥🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻💋💋💋🇺🇸🌸
