Kels and Jay converted a school bus into a gorgeous rolling home on a tight budget (under $30k). And, due to their tall height, they raised the roof of their skoolie. Their home features a wood stove, narrow shower & toilet area, roof top deck, expanding desk & entertainment area, an innovative couch design, and an outdoor basketball hoop (regulation height). They now live nomadically and are loving the tiny life!

I'm 5'3" so if I were living alone I wouldn't, but if someone tall lived with me then I would definitely want to raise it.
I would definitely do a roof raise, if time wasn't the issue. It allows you to make the aisle on the side & gives you more floor plans options. Makes the exterior look more like an RV than a bus, too.
I'm 6'5", I'd pretty much have to raise the roof. Watched a lot of conversions and videos on raising the roof. Not easy to do but doable.
I won't for my skoolie because a) money will be tight and b) I'mm petite and my cat is short so...lol. If I had a taller partner, maybe.

On a video, I saw a school bus conversion where they did use a window AC unit. They dropped the top half of a window down, had the
A/C unit on a tray with slides on it (Heavy Duty Slides). Pull the tray in or push it out, no lifting involved. On the inside they had a way to lock the unit on the tray and then a tie down from the ceiling. Easy in and out and lock down for the road. They also had a piece of plywood cut exactly to seal off the window for flies or mosquitoes. Whole think takes less than 30 seconds. Have to have s lot of solar and fuse protection. But well worth it!
I wonder if I could do that in a mini van lol

Good for you! I’m impressed. Been looking at bus conversions for 2 years now and even convinced my wife we should seriously consider this option. (she thinks pontoons under the house is a better idea) Your set for all 4 seasons. If you find yourselves in Canada we have a few acres behind the pontoonless house where we would be happy to let you recharge. Wine and fire on us.

The worktop is such an ingenious idea and also you have a shower and toilet. That is really essential and you also have a comfortable sitting area. Good job.
They are a cute couple and their conversion is beautiful!

They can still live that lifestyle with babies!
My advice for you in lighting your fireplace is A trigger starter torch for a propane bottle. Gets your fireplace started in no time!

Hey, it is a really great way to get more light in the b-room, so I like it. It is funny though, the creep factor 😝
I've actually have the same idea planned for my condo. My bathroom is between two bedrooms but has no natural light. I have planned to put in those glass cubes (I don't know what they are officially called) between the studs of the walls on each side. The glass cubes are opaque so they cannot be seen through but light can travel through them.
I have to agree with Jay. I think the word crisps is better and I think the sibilance from the word crisps matches the texture better. 💁🏻♂️ I'm from England though...

@@herzigharte maybe the language, but not the actual island. Cloudy wet/damp weather most days, and people make the most out of sunny weather. I guess what makes people British would probably be closer to us complaining about the weather lol.
That said, I think we're definitely noticing the effects of climate change - the hots last longer and are hotter.
@@willtato8778 Do you have some secret meaning that is not shared with outsiders when you say it is "not an actural island." The UK resides as part of a broken whole kingdom on two islands. England is one country sharing its landmass with Scotland and Wales. It is the same with Northern Ireland, the final part of the UK, that shares with the independent Republic of Ireland. Three parts of the countries on the Eastern UK island and the remaining country is at the top of the Western island map.
Perhaps you enjoy being mysterious and confusing Americans who have very long family histories in and about the two islands. So, please explain your oblique meaning to us, Will. : )

Beautiful bus. Their sink is huge! I often see people saying the same thing about the pee in the Nature... composting toilet. They're free without mortgage. Nice couple.
I can imagine it gets full quickly. I noticed several bottles full of pee next to the toilet, LOL. I think he pees in those instead of the toilet.
I can't wait to watch this a second time, maybe third, it's such a good video. The folding tv desk is such a good idea, so useful. The ceilings are so well done, the curved arch is really nice, so carefully cut.
The rope ladder is great, maybe there is a way to wedge a bar with 2 hooks across the bottom to hold bottom ends together when climbing, put it away after you come down.
Was not expecting the hoop, nice thing to have. I don't like tight places much but the bathroom looks pretty good, lol, the spy cut is funny. You can always put translucent film on it if it gets to be too weird, still plenty of light.
And thanks, good old fashioned fun THOW build, I love it. Lol fun exterior paint job. 😁

I am impressed. Building a school bus with a roof raise is hard enough for someone with a lot of experience. To not have any background in building and take on the project like that and have it come out so well he is unbelievable

Go to a stock feed place and see if they have "bentonite"
It's the cheapest and most effective kitty litter you will find.
Its clumps with the deposits so you only need to discard the clumps.
It holds the smell, usually comes in a 20Kg (40lb) bag and is just a crushed soft rock so it's 100% natural.
I have watch so many of these on so many different channels and have wondered about how do they get cooled off because most use the fantastic fans and say use ac off generator. But im from the south and am about to start process of getting my own bus and conversion and I have to have ac it is a HAVE TO HERE. So finally someone that uses the solar power for a that is so great to hear
One day when my kids graduate high school and move on with their lives I am so determined to go tiny whether it be a tiny house or a bus conversion. It is a dream of mine.

It’s beyond crazy to me that people are able to do compete, amazing bus conversions for $26k in America - in Australia if you want a decent ex-school bus (for example a 23 year old Mercedes that has just completed its life of an everyday school bus run/route and has no issues) your minimum starting price is $13k, for manual transmission and starting from $20k for automatic 🥺😳
Are prices just higher in general in Oz?
Bel H hmm, interesting. Have you been looking at older models for that price? Or smaller buses, I’m imagining? Like an Toyota Coaster kinda route?
I’ve been looking at all the Aussie Facebook pages and all the bus sale websites I can find and I’ve found that prices are pretty consistent around the $13k/ONO mark. I’m also more so looking at the 58/61 seater buses, which is basically the equivalent to 40”, so quite larger for full time living.. and hopefully eventually travelling once the borders are open to Victoria again 🤞🏻

Really cool build. Can’t say I dig the shower area but to each his own. Many happy years of travel to them. The basketball net and the swinging chair were neat ideas too. The chair would definitely be something I would want to try only a bit higher. Not as young as I used to be!! Congrats on a sweet accomplishment!

Lovely build. So homely and I love the L-shaped couch and home office arrangement. That swinging chair was way too low though and I would attach a fixed ladder to the side of the bus to access the deck rather than risk life and limb on the rope ladder.

put a stip of clear plexi glass in the creepy window (make it narrower so you have a gap at top and bottom for air circulation) and then put some Frosted Privacy Frosted Glass Window Film Sticker on it. Cheat from walmart or amazon.
