Thank you, Yvonne & Gertje for this informative training video! One can see how intelligent and well-behaved a well-trained, mature, Friesian actually is. Reintje remembered her paces & all commands very quickly. We also saw that she knew to stand still while the ropes were being adjusted. Such a difference from the videos that Yvonne recently posted lunging the 3-year olds for the first time. (And they did great for first-timers!) I’ll never forget how well-behaved Uniek was when she was first introduced to Risey. At first, of course, she was very excited & danced like she was doing plessage, but as soon as Rein indicated that she should stand still, she stood like a statue, even though one could see that she wanted to check out her new foal. Uniek also seems to know to be very still around young children, such as when baby Tieje was placed on her back & Faya was in her stall. I was also amazed when Yvonne posted the calendar video with 2 prized stallions standing so calmly within arms length of each other without any signs of aggression. One can see why the Friesian horse is renowned for its temperament! ❤️❤️❤️
A neighbor taught me how to lunge her horses. It was great to learn how little gestures really communicated to the horses. At long last I got to hang out with horses! Being with horses was very calming because you have to calm yourself to calm them.

Very educational video. Before that I had almost no idea about lunging. Very good camera work from Geertje and with Reintje a model on which the subject could be explained well, as she implemented the commands excellently. The beginning of the video was also funny, Sanne and Rising Star have now learned that hay is suitable for eating but not for climbing on. I think Uniek thought Yvonne didn't know what she wanted. At first she wasn't allowed to go out of the stable, and then she was wrong in the stall, too.

Gertie was excellent at filming and narrating….pointing out things that we should know about lunging! And Yvonne again demonstrates her wonderful horse knowledge! How nice it was like rinse janko was looking after his best friend rising star. So cute. Now they are fighting, biting but they love eachother so much. Friends for ever. I think that when you should give a stall to a horse, always let them in the same stall. They can remember very good, also witch stall. Look how reintje remember trott, canter in dutch draf + galop. How she remember she has to walk when you go to her back, and many more things. I believe they are inteligent. 👍🤩💞

Ha...That Sanne. What a character. I love her to bits. 😍 When she was just a week old, she was running around and would not follow her mother Sjirkje at all. Sanne then climbed on top of the mud mountain by the paddock. 😂Now she climbs over the hay bale 🤷 I think if Sanne were ever to be trained for it, would be a pretty good jumper...she has no fear 👍

I am in your same situation. My frustration is learning to say certain sounds and I usually need someone to write some things phonetically. I wonder if horses sense something different about someone with hearing disabilities?

I really enjoyed you sharing Reintje's lunging session. It was really interesting and very informative. I loved the graceful way you explained, how lowering her head in exercise will strengthen her back and tighten he muscles in all the right places.
Really well done, thank you! It's very clear to me that your horses are well loved and well trained. I appreciated the explanation about the neck muscles especially. I always call the muscle on the lower side of the neck the resistance muscle; you can always tell a horse has been lunged or ridden on too tight a rein when they have that massive bulge on the underside from flinging their heads up and fighting to get away from the bit. Your horses are lovely, light and balanced under saddle and on the lunge line. It's always a pleasure to watch you work with them.
When the horses come in to the stable as a group, it reminds me of a college dormatory as the students are looking for their rooms and fill the hall with hustle and bustle. Yvonne, your videos are always so much fun to watch, thank you!
So much to say...Will start by thanking Yvonne for this education. Now I can understand some of the basics of lunging what and why. I have learned so much here on Friesian Horses that I can now carry on an informed conversation about horses with most anyone. 😮 20 horses 8 hours a day...No wonder Yvonne was "lunged out" 😄

This was SUCH A GREAT VIDEO! I only watch Friesian Horses videos now; but, long ago, on another channel, I saw a man lunging a horse. He was so hard on the animal, it looked like torture; not muscle training. As always, Yvonne shows us the proper and humane way to train horses. Having watched Yvonne's videos of our Friesians at Inspection, I could immediately see the value in training horses this way. Most excellent, Yvonne! Thanks to the videographer and interviewer, Geertje too! I have commented before that I LOVE watching Yvonne & Geertje working together and speaking with each other. Their banter is truly fun to watch and their friendship is so obvious. Of course, as an American (who only speaks English), I'd have no clue as to what they are saying, but for Yvonne's subtitles and Google Translate. 🤣LOL!😂 I know that it's a lot of extra work for Yvonne, so I want her to know how much I appreciate the time and effort it takes for her to do that for us. Your instructional video was fascinating and very logical. The tips you gave were interesting: like the dropping of the whip, the lunge line draping in concentrically smaller rings. Explaining the why of the ropes to arch Reintje's neck and how it results in how her hind quarters work was briliant. It occurs to me to ask: did you or Rein decide to have you train Uniek and Reintje for showing events? Is there something in how those two mares presented themselves that made you and Rein think they'd benefit from the training and be more genetically and financially useful? I ask this because it is logical you can only really train one at a time, with your family obligations and health. I see you beginning to work with Reintje's daughter, too.
This was really interesting! And you two are a good combination for instructional videos. The camerawoman (who I think is Geertje? I'm not great with names) knows just the right questions to ask to make tings clear for the viewers who don't have as much background knowledge, and to complement Yvonne's clear and concise explanations. As someone who did horseriding as a kid/teen and only lunged a horse once at a clinic, this was informative, interesting, and entertaining, which is the best you can hope for!
I thought lunging was all about communication with your horse, I am amazed to learn it's more about exercise and strengthening a horses' muscles. AMAZING and very informational method of training. Initially I was very uncomfortable seeing riding with the head down, seemed like torture to me, but now understand why. Thanks Yvonne and Geertje!!!

Ha...That Sanne. What a character. I love her to bits. 😍 When she was just a week old, she was running around and would not follow her mother Sjirkje at all. Sanne then climbed on top of the mud mountain by the paddock. 😂Now she climbs over the hay bale 🤷 I think if Sanne were ever to be trained for it, would be a pretty good jumper...she has no fear 👍
I had no idea what lunging was about. I thought the horse just went in a circle around the person. What a great explanation by Yvonne to a non-horse person like me.
I've been watching your videos for a few months now. I wanted to say thank you.. not only for filming everything you do, but also for captioning it. I'm deaf, and this is one of my favorite channels. I am in your same situation. My frustration is learning to say certain sounds and I usually need someone to write some things phonetically. I wonder if horses sense something different about someone with hearing disabilities?

I really enjoyed you sharing Reintje's lunging session. It was really interesting and very informative. I loved the graceful way you explained, how lowering her head in exercise will strengthen her back and tighten he muscles in all the right places.

Really well done, thank you! It's very clear to me that your horses are well loved and well trained. I appreciated the explanation about the neck muscles especially. I always call the muscle on the lower side of the neck the resistance muscle; you can always tell a horse has been lunged or ridden on too tight a rein when they have that massive bulge on the underside from flinging their heads up and fighting to get away from the bit. Your horses are lovely, light and balanced under saddle and on the lunge line. It's always a pleasure to watch you work with them.

So much to say...Will start by thanking Yvonne for this education. Now I can understand some of the basics of lunging what and why. I have learned so much here on Friesian Horses that I can now carry on an informed conversation about horses with most anyone. 😮 20 horses 8 hours a day...No wonder Yvonne was "lunged out" 😄

Yes, Yvonne did dressage with Uniek before she rode Reintje. They achieved some high levels and Uniek has the sport predicate.

I only watch Friesian Horses videos now; but, long ago, on another channel, I saw a man lunging a horse. He was so hard on the animal, it looked like torture; not muscle training. As always, Yvonne shows us the proper and humane way to train horses. Having watched Yvonne's videos of our Friesians at Inspection, I could immediately see the value in training horses this way. Most excellent, Yvonne! Thanks to the videographer and interviewer, Geertje too!
I have commented before that I LOVE watching Yvonne & Geertje working together and speaking with each other. Their banter is truly fun to watch and their friendship is so obvious. Of course, as an American (who only speaks English), I'd have no clue as to what they are saying, but for Yvonne's subtitles and Google Translate. 🤣LOL!😂 I know that it's a lot of extra work for Yvonne, so I want her to know how much I appreciate the time and effort it takes for her to do that for us.

How long do you keep foal’s with the mother’s before you wein them? And do you keep male foal’s for breeding? I couldn’t remember if you said anything about that.
Weaning is at about 5 months. Colts are not kept at this stable for breeding.

Agree. I've always loved horses but didn't know much of anything. I've found that people like you and me are friendly and eager to learn. Yvonne really does have a wonderful, warm personality and she's a great teacher. Watching the horses in the meadow is definitely relaxing. 💯👍

Your instructional video was fascinating and very logical. The tips you gave were interesting: like the dropping of the whip, the lunge line draping in concentrically smaller rings. Explaining the why of the ropes to arch Reintje's neck and how it results in how her hind quarters work was briliant. It occurs to me to ask: did you or Rein decide to have you train Uniek and Reintje for showing events? Is there something in how those two mares presented themselves that made you and Rein think they'd benefit from the training and be more genetically and financially useful? I ask this because it is logical you can only really train one at a time, with your family obligations and health. I see you beginning to work with Reintje's daughter, too.

This was really interesting! And you two are a good combination for instructional videos. The camerawoman (who I think is Geertje? I'm not great with names) knows just the right questions to ask to make tings clear for the viewers who don't have as much background knowledge, and to complement Yvonne's clear and concise explanations. As someone who did horseriding as a kid/teen and only lunged a horse once at a clinic, this was informative, interesting, and entertaining, which is the best you can hope for!

I thought lunging was all about communication with your horse, I am amazed to learn it's more about exercise and strengthening a horses' muscles.
