    I have a suggestion, which you probably already tried, but can you use your drone to see if Sir Porkington is stuck in the Cedar Swamp? Seems to me the level of mud you showed could easily get a pig stuck in it akin to quicksand almost. Surely the livestock soon learned that storm meant no more hot fence, for a while. Or were they penned up inside too, for storms? Weather and farmers, they fight one another sometimes.
      Speaking as an electrical engineer, there ought to be more robust ways of charging a fence (the vacuum tubes of old could hold up to a lot more than our modern solid state can), however unless the supply really is isolated from the power grid (as in that solar box) the lightning can follow the supply into power wiring, even if it had to jump after its first hit in order to get there.

Had plans for a new shop, hoophouse greenhouse, carport, chicken run, and even house remodel. Maybe I'll get a few things done this fall. I am single, but I found a pretty reliable high school kid to help just keep things running. He may not do things the way I do, but I am grateful he is willing to work. He can only come once a week now that school has started, so I'm gradually picking up more of the work. Trying to get my fall garden ready. At least it's not 100 degrees outside anymore. We call this false fall here in Texas. Highs upper 80's.

    I love your farm, and love the oak tree you pointed out. Please, if you want to baby those trees, clear out all grass and ground cover at the base of them by putting plain clean cardboard out 3 feet from the base of the trunk in every direction. It might not seem like much, but the grass & groundcover at the base steals nutrients from the tree, strangles your tree roots, and potentially harbors tree diseases. Been at ground zero of at least four lightning strikes in my life and it’s always a truly heart stopping experience. The first and most explosive was aged 7, when our TV aerial was hit. This was 1985 and the inside of our TV resembled your charger box.

    I'm so glad to hear that everyone is okay! 😊 I’ve also witnessed a lightning strike right in front of me. On a rainy day, my dad and I were standing at our pig farm during a heavy rain with lots of thunder and lightning in the sky. Suddenly, a flash of light struck a tree only about 5 meters away from us. We were terrified, but thankfully, everyone was safe. The only damage was to the TV and some electrical devices. The next day, I finally went to check out the tree and saw a long crack with a black streak along it, and the tree was completely dead a few days later. Thunder and lightning are truly frightening. Thank God for our safety! 🙏

I’ve had some up close and personal experience with lightning, and trust me, respect and caution is the name of that game. Where on earth can Sir Porkington be, please keep us informed, that is just plain weird. Relieved to see everyone made it through another storm, let’s hope you can keep it that way. Thanks Morgan, always good to see what’s up at Gold Shaw Farm!🐕🐕🦆🪿🐓🐥💕👍

    Remember what I said about your electric fence being your only barrier for a lot of issues? This is exactly the sort of issue I was expecting, you're lucky you didn't lose any animals. You need backup plans for when things fail.

      Wow frankly I’m shocked he doesn’t care what “CantThinkOfAHandleSoItsThis” has to say. Surely the condescending random on the internet has all the wisdom. Sounds like you were wrong not right given he literally didn’t lose anything. Using the fact that nothing happened as evidence that you were right that something bad would happen is hilarious. “See I told you if this hypothetical happened that another hypothetical could happen (it didn’t)”

    I know other summers are much drier but i think the birds really need a pond so maybe diverting some of the stream to make a few ponds would be good for them especially in summer heat. Looking forward to the goats.

    Given that the fence engerizer was blown up, it was your electric fence that was struck, not your barn.

    • @Berkeloid0
      @Berkeloid0 11 дней назад

      Definitely. If the barn had been struck then it would've induced some current in the fence wire but it wouldn't have been enough to cause the level of damage seen here. It would've had to have been a very close if not direct strike on the fence itself.

    I'm glad you are getting goats to eat down all of the weeds to clean up your farm where the cattle do not graze. Your farm is growing fast now with a lot more cattle. The property that the cattle don't graze is more than you can keep up alone and do all of your other projects. The goats should be eating machines to give you a break on property up keep. 👏👏👏👏

    I actually know the answer to why the fence charger was affected while the pump was not. It was because the fence charger was on, while the pump was not on. The electricity was flowing to the fence charger, but was not flowing to the pump. So, anything that was connected to the electricity grid and that was running was affected, while anything not running was not affected.

    Hi Morgan, I'm doing the same kind of assessment on my property, which has the Dog River running through it. I've seen the river dig itself deeper and with a more narrow flow area, also the intensity of the flooding recently has knocked some previously high banks down lower, so the water will rush over that area, and into my back field, through my barn (!), and eventually fill my cellar. I've been here for about 60 years, and believe, from observing the river since I was a kid, that dredging isn't the answer, but floodplain creation is. I have a large field that used to gradually fill when the river flooded, and I believe that recreating that situation probably would be a gentler long term solution to my problem.
    Your idea for herding the water into the cedar swamp when it floods is, IMHO, a good one. Help funnel the water where you want it to go. Also, that may be where it originally WAS going before the intense flooding you've been experiencing rearranged everything, and you and Mother Nature can work together to redirect the brook to, hopefully, its original status. Dredging doesn't hold for too long, and you will find yourself with the same problem again in a few years, having to dredge again. Very interesting video, and I am so glad you and your barn and property are safe, all the animals too!
    💕💕

    Always have surge protection, a good Earth path and have good Bonding to structure steel frame work and your lightning Protection in line with your local Electrical Regulations.
    It is good you have a “depth “ of redundancy when you have a failure of kit.
