I was born on October 14, 1943 in St Louis, MO. in a clean hospital with my father and older brother waiting. Sometimes you need a touchstone such as this video to remind yourself what the world was like when you got here.
We forget these stories and I have a bad feeling we are on our way to repeating some of them

My great grandmother's family disappeared in Poland at the end of 41' and as such, no more letters would be received from them here in the states. May the millions like them NEVER be forgotten.

Dr. Mark Felton is a true Master at non-fictional 'storytelling.' With the intelligence, wit and lucidity this man brings to his fascinating subject, I am slave to every video he produces. I can only think that I would have been a better student in school had I ever been a student in one of Dr. Felton's classes. Bravo, Sir! Keep the excellent videos coming, please!

Mark, I'm very excited to listen to this series. Many years ago as a Teenager, we regularly attended a Church which had a weekly potluck where Missionaries and other interesting speakers from all over the world spoke regularly. The Pastor was one of those people who somehow knew people all over the world. One night Toivi Blatt spoke, and it really made an impression on me. I also bought and read one of his books about the escape. Thanks for reviewing this little known but important chapter of WWII history.

@@billmers3219 It was a Baptist Church in WA State. Not sure exactly how he ended up speaking at the church that night, but the Pastor had been all over the world and had also been a Missionary in the Sudan for 17 years, I believe in the 1960/70s. He seemed to know people from everywhere.

I live in Jamaica, I remember the TV movie back in the 1980's and I never saw it again but as I listen to the series it all came back to me.

Sobibor is the title. On Amazon Prime Video. It's a foreign film so no english. Very great film.

There is an 80s movie with the great Rutger Hauer as the Russian Lieutenant. Great movie. Don't know if the movie on Amazon is worth it. From my experience, remakes are usually never up to standards.

Even though I know (because of my armature's interest in history) how this story goes, I can not get enough of Dr. Felton's story telling and ability to communicate history. One of the top, if not the top, historians on RUclips.

The story of sobbibor is a saddening yet such an inspiring one. When people had nothing they found everything in it to fight, incredible.
Yeo Thomas (a British spy) said to his interrogator "I don't know anything and even if I did I wouldn't tell you " his treatment was brutal in the extreme including pliers on his genitals (you all can imagine that type of torture ) he is my hero of WW2 in a world of this type of brutality and I implore you to Google his defiance! Another brilliant upload from our local friendly Mr Felton! !!

The story of the recently discovered Sobibor photo album is an interesting story. The photo album of the death camp was vergoten but survived because it's owner, the ss officer on the horse, got killed and his personal effects were bundled up and sent to his next of kin who stashed it away for 80 years.
Has it been made public yet? If so.. where?
@@lornestein7248 The photos in this story are from it. Google Sobibor album and hit images. The most sinister is the pic of the front gate with the SS + Swastika flags and 'SS Sonderkommando' above the entrance.

I saw the film about sobibor, that to this day is the darkest film I've ever seen, but glad that history allowed the revolt to be successful.

I remember that movie. The scene where the inmates are surging against the barbed wire, seeking to be free, brought tears to my eyes, symbolic not only for their desire, but for all people yearning to be free of oppression.
I've seen a film about this which was very moving and inspiring in a way. My goodness, imagine the bravery of those people!! Imagine how it must have felt to finally fight back against the animals who had been their captors and tormentors.
Don't leave us with this cliff hangar!!!! I'll forget the story in such detail in a couple days.... Excellent as always Mark. 🙏

What is on the Sobibor site today? As a youngster, I had a neighbor whose father and brother perished there in WWII.
These camps were demolished and attempts made to hide the murders. Too many had escaped to be successful.
There’s zilch there, you see a few burial pits in the woods, an old wooden toilet by the church on the road, the small visitor centre museum. The buildings around the railway track where you see old pics with soldiers etc etc.
You can always use Google maps & Google Street-View.
It's all there.

There is also another interesting escape story, from Auschwitz, polish scout Kazimierz Piechowski escaped in the camp commander car. I think it is also worth your narration, sources are available. I wasn't a history major in college, but I took Western Civ (2 sem) as electives and to, hopefully, feel a little educated. Both profs were wonderful storytellers and kept everyone writing madly the entire time. Thank you for your stories, but I'm enjoying them, without notes.

Yeah. The BBC produced comedy series about 1) the potential invasion and enslavement of Britain (Dad's Army) 2) the end of Empire in India (It Ain't Half Hot, Mum, with a blacked-up white actor) and 3) one of the most brutal partisan wars in European history ('Allo, 'Allo!). And I love all of them, even though they are clearly repugnant to a modern audience.

I express my greatest thanks to the man who helped to pull this off, Alexander "Sasha" Perchezsky (I have no idea how to spell his last name. If someone does know, please let me know). Without him, much of what we know about the Sobibor Revolt would've been lost to time and the people who escaped the camp and survived the war wouldn't be able to tell their stories. God bless him and all those who survived!!!!!!!!
Thomas Blatt was 15 when he took part in the preparations for and the execution of the uprising on October 14, 1943 in the Sobibor death camp - and survived. In his book "Nur die Schatten bleiben" (Only the Shadows Remain), written 40 years later, one learns at close quarters and in a nerve-racking way what everyday life was like there for the working slaves who faced the gas mass murder on a daily basis - and how the meticulously planned uprising was able to succeed...

In Russian, his name is Александр Аронович Печерский (Alexander Aronovich Pechersky). He lived in Rostov-on-Don after the war. He died there in 1990 at the age of 80. In my country, everyone remembers this, because in my country there is not a single family in which there are no victims of that war. We lost 27 million people then.

Terrible, frighful, horrifying might be more suitable descriptions. Imagine the horrible lives these prisoners had to endure and their desperation running across a minefield, under fire, to attempt to wrest back their freedom.

I met the man who wrote the book that the movie was based on , he was about 16 years old when he escaped. He showed me and put my finger on his jaw where I could feel the bullet still there. I showed him my scars where a 45 caliber bullet had gone through my Jaw while I was was in combat in Nam. Very nice man. This was at a book signing in Aberdeen Washington.

I’m a history fanatic because of the type of work I’m in and I was raised by war vets. Is anyone else binging on historical documentaries because of what Is going on domestically and world wide? Aren’t the parallels between the 1930s and now crazy?

3:48 Franz Stangl after the was imprisoned after the war. He escaped and fled to Brazil. He was extradited to Germany in 1967 to stand trial.
Towards the end of the trial he died of a heart attack on 28 June 1971.
4:00 Franz Reichleitner was later transferred to Italy. He was killed by partisans on 3 January 1944.
5:07 Karl Frenzel 20 December 1966, Frenzel was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released on a technicality in 1982.
He died on 2 September 1996
8:30 Philip Bialowitz survived the death camp. He died in Florida on August 6, 2016, at the age of 90.
Esther Terner Raab survived and died at age 92
11:10 Leon Feldhendler survived Sobibor and resided in Lubin and was killed by polish nationalists on 6 April 1945.
12:20 Alexander Pechersky survived and died on 19 January 1990 in Russia.
19:30 Thomas "Toivi" Blatt survived, in 1957, he emigrated to Israel from Poland, and in 1958 settled in the United States. He died in Santa Barbara CA, October 31, 2015
21:00 SS Sergeant Gustav Wagner after WW2 escaped to Brazil with Franz Stangl. In October 1980, Wagner was found dead with a knife in his chest in Atibaia.
25:10 Walter Hochberg was killed in the revolt.

Anyone interested in Mark's work should check out Erik Larson, if they haven't done so already. He's a historian who writes non-fiction from the WW2 era that is so gripping it feels as though you're reading a novel.
