After reading a couple of testimonials, it becomes clear that surviving such a kind of hell was a mix of pure luck and strong willing to see another day.
I was there in September, and it was quite a rainy day out there (while us fully dressed) that tourists were begging the guides to go to another location because the camp itself is located on a swamp and strong winds were blowing from all the directions that they could not bear it anymore. Imagine those who had to face it each and every day without food, warm clothes, and proper shelter.
*The prisoners created their own 'Hell' by allowing themselves to be 'herded like sheep'*
*Once someone has arrived to a 'Camp' even the dullest would know what their own senses are telling them*

These men who revolted and the women who supplied them were courageous, and their actions of resistance against the evil Nazis are inspiring and worthy of remembering and celebrating. It is better to die for freedom than to "live" in slavery to be tortured and murdered.

My friend from Vienna, Ann, gave her diamonds to a Nazi guard so he would let her escape the death train headed to a concentration camp. She later came to the US.

The cruelty and hardship that people endured during WW2 is something my mind can only try to imagine. Thanks to dedicated historians like Dr Mark Felton who can inform us within a narrative, of their struggles will not be forgotten and hopefully never endured again. Keeping the narrative factual and telling the whole story must be a difficult thing to do especially on subject material that deals with the horrifying and the gruesome side of humanity. Yet another important story you have presented Thank you.

We rarely heard the details in the US as high school and university students of history, political science, or German language. Nice to hear these stories of courage and determination. I was lucky to have a high school German language teacher who was responsible for arresting Dr. Morell so we had access to first hand information that peaked my curiosity and interest. That is so unbelievably, deliberately cold.
It was done on a larger scale in the Ukraine, during the Holodomor, where the Soviet Union removed all food from Ukraine and sold it off as exports, and thus starving up to 12 million people to death. This was just as cold, only not as widely talked of, and by some not known at all.
What nonsense. It’s no secret that by then, Germany was in a desperate struggle for resources. They were barely able to feed their own soldiers.

@@elvenkind6072 was it truly deliberate or was this accusation mere propaganda? In September 1944, Amon Goetz was arrested by the SS for his actions while he was commander of Plaszow cc. One of the things he was charged with was failure to provide adequate food to the inmates. Deliberate starvation clearly never was policy.

Before any obvious comments about actions carried out by Nazis on prisoners, 'Deliberate' starvation implies such passive cruelty, as opposed to active cruelty. It's a different kind of cold, possibly because it's just so casual, patient, indifferent.

I am very thankful for being born in a wonderful time (compared to some downright awful times all throughout history) and recognized that I am blessed to have a loving, caring, and well off family.
Wishing I could have lived my best years in early 1940s Europe is not something I can say has ever crossed my mind.

This story makes absolutely no sense. He claims these genocide workers would be replaced and murdered but at the same time they are not shot when the SS finds out about their plot. Also, several people came there in 1943 he mentions. So how many of the people on the train were killed on arrival? Feel like I'm missing some important details.

Incredible story, well researched, no bias, as documentaries should be. Incidentally, I found out recently that I had family that were in the camps, I do not know their fates, nor which camp they were held. I hope to research and find out more. Thank you for telling this story.

I can't help but smile at the irony of an SS officer being thrown into an Auschwitz crematorium furnace by his own prisoners.
Such a shame that these brave individuals were killed, among the countless other innocents. Even if the riot didn't have its desired outcome, it's good that those who stood up to their subjugators are being remembered.

Heartbreaking and inspiring. As usual feltons flat unemotional matter of fact delivery, crisp diction, careful research and attention to detail make this a treasure. The moment we forget is the moment we start to slide towards another world war.
Thank you for this. My grandfather survived and most of his family killed immediately in the gas chambers. He worked at the IG Farben plant which gave him chronic lung issues which ultimately killed him in his 70’s.

Not sure if you have yet. But I'd like to see some stories about the millions that were killed outside of camps. The ones shot into giant pits. Most people don't know about that they just think of the camps.
I'd like to see Mark do a video about the Einsatzgruppen(SS death squads). They shot over two million people.
Everyone has heard of/ knows about them. Babi Yar and all of it. Nazis = every possible way you can think of “evil” and murder of poor innocents. Its overplayed to be honest, we get the point.

visited the Auschwitz and Birkenau sites last year and would have to say that absolutely everyone interested in the history should visit these sites to gain a greater understanding of the sheer horror in our sad page of history.

I still need to visit Auschwitz before I die. I was told that the people doing the tours are told to not take photographs or be disrespectful. They also remind people "Thousands of people have died here. Respect the dead and know that this isn't the place to talk or be loud. This place is a cemetery and you will be reminded of that."

This should have been taught in school. Many of our problems today, in all probabilities, our world wouldn't be as it is today. I was born in 1942 and knew something bad happened, but not the entire history.
Sadly it hasn't. I'm 57 and I wasn't taught about both world wars. I think the generation that was involved just didn't want to talk about it and wanted to forget. It should never be forgotten because history repeats itself

Brave folk - better to die with dignity than as a slave, in any event. Their honour and memory is inviolate. It is a fact that most victims of violent perpetrators fearfully comply, sadly, to their demise. There are still many predators among us, and I think especially of those who would prey on women - ladies, I urge you to resist with everything you've got: yell, scream, kick and flail, but never ever go along with the demands of a would-be assailant. Your best chances of survival lie in making a huge fuss, which may well cause the monster to break off his attack. One thing for sure, if you go along quietly it usually does not end well. Practice how you would react if such a situation is thrust upon you - train as best you can, to do maximum damage with whatever means you have at hand to deter an attacker. Its your best chance for survival.
My advice to women is to listen to their intuition and act accordingly. Some rapists kill women who resist.

I still haven't found a war time documentary as good as Europa the final battle. It goes into so much more detail than most documentaries on the subject.
