Caesar brilliantly orchestrated every moment of this speech to rally his men to do the unthinkable and march on Rome. First, keeping Mark Antony and Pullo in a bloody state to arouse the army's anger. Second, falsely implying that Caesar being declared an enemy of Rome meant they were also enemies of Rome. Third, recognising the bravery of men who served him and rewarding them to ensure their loyalty. Fourth, ensuring Titus Pullo was obligated to say yes after accepting a big bag of money. And fifth, ensuring the entire army would join him to emulate Pullo, declared to be the bravest soldier in the legion.
If I was Pillo, I would assuredly take horse by night to Hispaniola Lusitania with my bag of gold and retire to Nazare. After all, I did not say when I would fight for that Caesar, who should not hand over a bag of money that will likely be lost before it can be invested…
One of the greatest and best shows HBO has ever produced, such a shame it was canceled. The acting and writing are absolutely brilliant. Ray Stevenson is truly missed. 😔
What I loved about Rome (in the first season especially) is that although they took very loose dramatic license with many historical events, some of them actually played out exactly as stated in the history books but for different reasons as shown in the show e.g. Titus instigated the brawl with the Pompei soldiers due to an earlier beef about gambling. Love it!
Great speech from a great drama that made me understood Roman history better. Notice Caesar avoided the potential "bystander effect" in psychology, by singling Titus Pullo out. By having him say "Yes, I will follow you", it encourages the rest of the legion to do so as well.
The story of Titus and Vorenus is well written by Caeser himself in the Gaul Commentaries. A slightly different story, but epic still. This series is these characters.
They were based out of real people , Julius Caesar mentioned them in his memoirs . The wouldn’t even comprehend being on a television 2000 years later lol
@@rvalle11 Totally relevant to this scene. It was a rhetorical trick that Caeser used in the book (and likely in real life) to hold up these men as heroes in front of his legion. The book story about these guys was epic, but admittedly brief. The strong suggestion is that the show writers did read the Gaul Commentary and were inspired by it. It was incredibly creative for the writers to flesh out these quasi-historical figures as the main characters in the show.
"When 50 brave men of the XIII (Legion) fought Pompey's thousand in the Forum and saved the Tribune (Marc Anthony), it was Legionary Titus Pullo who drew first blood!" Still my favorite scene in all of Rome. Authority figure noticing your bravery and honor and awarding you in front of the entire army.
Caesar was very prolific at awarding and promoting men. This had two effects -- first, it showed the rest of the men that their deeds were recognized and they would be rewarded for them. second, it created a group of men who would be loyal to him instead of their previous benefactor. In this way he entered Gaul with Rome's legions, and left Gaul with Caesar's legions.
@@victorkong82 Yeah it was propaganda, but the Optimates had it coming. With the way they struggle to write and make shows these days, I would be hesitant to bring back something this good and think it could ever shine near as bright.
It's excellent, very similar to Game of Thrones, but based on actual history. The first season is better than all of Game of Thrones. The second season is on par with the best of Thrones.
HBO I wish you’d bring this back. Rome was ahead of its time. If only it had been produced during the GOT era, people crave this type of content. I love history and while this wasn’t entirely historically accurate it made for a great entertaining show.
Imagine Rome season 3 taking place in another critical moment of Roman history. I couldn't get enough of this show back then and would cherish another season now.

I love how Mark Antony is still covered in blood. when Julius' camp is north of italy, maybe around the alps. and it takes around around a week and a half to get from rome to the alps walking. so this show is implying that antony fled rome covered in blood, travelled to Julius' camp for around a week, and got there without bothering to change clothes or clean himself up.
I like how he twisted it to make it sound like the senate declared the whole army rebels when really it was only Caesar who was made a rebel. The soldiers didn’t officially rebel into they crossed the rubicon
Rome walked so that Game of Thrones could run.
But Rome never fell.
Very much indeed

If there was a living embodiment of the word populist it was Julius Caesar. He knew how to at least appear as a man of the people.
Augustus was definitely writing notes when Caesar retold him of what happened.

Yes, it’s called propaganda, which Caesar was notoriously good at. This is also why he wanted his soldiers to see the blood on Antony’s face.
