Jackfish (Chain Pickerel) are native fish to Alabama. So, they are not invasive. In fact, several studies have shown bass weights to improve with lakes that have healthy jackfish populations. That is because they eat the smaller bass which allows for more forage for the bigger bass. You probably got a mouthful of bones because you didn't filet it properly. You can't clean them like other fish or else you'll get y-shaped bones. Moreover, they are a subtle, sweet tasting fish. You basically wrecked it doing the blackening technique. They cannot hold up to a lot of seasoning or sauces. A simple fry with a cornmeal breading is about all you need.

In the Florida panhandle we call them jack fish and they are native here but I don’t know how far west their native range is because my in-laws in SW Louisiana don’t seem to have when I fish out there. But the easy way to eat them is scale them, gut them and score them deep in a square pattern then fry them whole. That way you don’t have to worry about the Y bone.

Continue to enjoy watching you, lived in S.Alabama 6 years now, have caught a few pickerel while living here, from Maryland there everywhere, I've caught them up to 30" long bigger then supposed to grow, they have pulled my kayak around, your right they are evasive, you have them in a closed body of water they will eat everything then start eating each other, thanks again for the videos, keep it up

Over here in the FL Panhandle we call the Chain Pickerel by the local name 'Jack Fish. Those you caught were really nice fish compared to most we catch. Surprised you didn't mention anything about bones. We scale them but leave the skin on and cross-hatch the meat about 1/4 inch apart, then fry them or about the same as you did in the skillet with butter or light oil. Some folks actually target them.
