The two tests against England in 1984 were officially the last International matches by the Boks until their reinstatement to world rugby in 1992. We only saw glimpses of how good the Boks might have been in the 80s due to sporting boycotts. Nass Botha and Danie Gerber were world class players but unfortunately got limited International exposure.

So many proper playmakers and excellent handlers in this backline. Made for great running rugby. Every time Tobias or Gerber or Du Plessis touched the ball you felt something was on.

Tobias was waaaaaay underrated. He was far more of an attacking FH than Naas Botha. Johan Heunis was a great player too.

England were abysmal in the 1980s until about November 1988 when they beat a good Aussie side at Twickers.

England are abysmal at most sports. Their purple patch flares up now and then, almost by accident but then they go back to being shit again which is great comedy for the rest of us.

xpat73 yeah the England rugby team in the 80’s was more about the booze and the banter than the rugby. The Carling era changed all that even though you had banter merchants like Skins still in the mix.

That's strange as in 1980 Beaumonts England won the grand slam!

roy theboy The key players of Beaumont's 1980 team had retired the following season. Then it was back to business as usual; constant change of players and selectors who were clueless.

ENGLAND were quite a dull side for most of the eighties, though they had a very good period between 80 and 82; victory against the All blacks in 83 was also a great moment, but the years 85 to 88 were pretty difficult for them , again.

This is the year I started playing rugby. Yes the game has changed immensely but the enjoyment of playing has not :)

Yep, starting in the late 80s I think, the game of rugger has started changing. The refs were kinda laid back in those days. The play of the ball time has increased. For example in this game, there was around 20-25 minutes of actual play. England play a boring forward rugby back then and the Boks played running rugby. In the late 60s, kicking out of the full was banned in rugby union thanks to the Australians innovation of the rule in their competitions.

One or two. Token players to try and pretend to a rugby world they were "changing". The crowd and state of emergency in the country showed different.
