you just can't mention anything about metal without some internet metal nerds raging in the comments about it. I could easily play this riff but never really bothered to play metal riffs like this even though i like metal so this lesson was pretty great for me. thanks. Tabs are on the site in the description and its tuned down to D standard, so all strings down two semitones.
@FiniganMusic Haha, I was thinking that too! This lick is in E Phrygian dominant, which is based on the A minor scale. That one note makes it slightly major and messes up the mood entirely. Alternatively you would replace the F# with a F (or even an accented G if you want to get fancy).
For whatever reason, the riffs slowed down sound better that played at full speed. Listen to it played at full speed 0:50 and then slowed down 1:10 it has that low E chunk and a nice easy riff. I love it! Mike is such a metal badass. More!
Testament is not only an influence to them, but Alex Skolnick is a friend of theirs. Into the Pit by Testament and Laid to Rest by Lamb of God has really close-sounding riffs. It's just a matter of influence.
@wtfwasthatt i think there is a lot of Pantera there. the triplet rhythm, right hand hops (palm muting then ringing a chord every triplet), no set key throughout the riff, etc etc. now, they could have picked some better notes to put in there, like IMHO that last note should be a flat 5th, not a regular 5th, but whatever. i think it's very Pantera-ish in the rhythm and right-hand technique.
So, Metal Mike is your name right? Well, you sound like you come from western europe (maybe germany), I was on a website called wer-kennt-wen.de and on a group photo album it said "Metal-Mike's Waffen" which means Metal Mikes weapons, and it was a bunch of jackson guitars, so I am wondering, is that the guy in the video.
There are a lot of metal genres, and even though one might prevail over the others in terms of popularity, this doesn't mean that the niche genres will disappear or won't evolve. I believe that we might see a lot of more influences coming into metal. For instance, oriental folk music. Orphaned Land, Myrath, Amaseffer & others are good examples. Another example might be the fusion of post-rock and black metal, with bands such as Lantlos, Heretoir, Alcest etc..
ever heard testament? LoG must have listened to that stuff all the time when they were younger, all i hear in LoG reminds me of them! testament has to be my all fav thrash metal band along with exodus and kreator.
+arcykaplanhehe seriously though lol i like that little inspiration from the 3 days of darkness riff by testament but that note caught my ear like a screwdriver being shot out of a potato cannon into my eardrum lol guess i can't say it was wrong since everyone has their style but it sure sounded odd as shit to me lol too happy sounding for metal riff in my opinion
Do you think I'd know anything about what I'm saying if I didn't play guitar? I'm not saying that if it's in Eb it sounds bad, it's just that it's pointless to play in it because it doesn't make the music any heavier and it's just a nuisance when I'm trying to learn a song and I either have to tune my guitar down to play it or edit the song to be in E standard. Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan are two of the best guitarists ever. Was them playing in Eb still pointless? Yes.
I'm siding with the death metal bands (Morbid Angel, Deicide, SFU, CC, ect.), but I think you're right about where metal might go. However, I say the future of metal lies in the hands of the newest wave of bands of this day and age.
Dude, I've edited songs to go from Eb to E standard and there's no difference in how heavy they are. And what do you mean "inaccesable lower notes"? Play the rest of the notes half a step higher then. D isn't bad because it's easy to tune just one string down and D is when it starts to make a difference, and if it goes any lower than that then it really starts to make a difference.
The thing about this is the major scale lick in the lowest notes used in the riff... it sounds REALLY weird. I mean Devin uses major licks in metal but makes it sound huge and powerful that just sounds dorky no offense. I LOOOOVE the rhythms and other inflections tho dude holy fuck.
personally i think djent is its own genre, its like how metal came from rock, all the progressive stuff is metalish too, but id say that the "real" metal is, like zomBLord said, much of the melodic death metal bands, metal (and the different styles of music) is pretty much about a distinctive image and sound and of course, attitude.
i know i will probably get a bit of hate for this, but i dont think of metalica/pantera/iron maiden as really 'metal, i think that the future lies with bands like Meshuggah/nociceptor/vidhjarta and other (i use the term lightly) Djent bands, or go more progressive with symphony X/dream theater/animals as leaders.
Just replace the F# with an F and its fine. And Mike, I know you wanna reach out to beginners, but can you do something a little more complicated? Maybe something progressive like Dream Theatre or something Djenty like Meshuggah.
here we go 1) that first quote was said by me and i stand by it 2) the second quote is right. Djent as a sound is the chug with high riffs, (not coined by meshuggah, but close), Djent as a genre DOES include a lot of semitional melodies and DOES jake jazz and metal influences 3) if you go on my channel, you can see me (bass) and SupaSpireiteXx (guitar/vocals) not "touching any instruments in our lives'. now go and do some research into some Djent that is not meshuggah and try again.

E to D is only one step mate. 2 steps would be C. half steps (flat tunings) does not count as 1 whole step.
Lithium IRL you are right, i should have said 2 half steps or semitones. (i edited the comment for clarity)
Pantera + Testament: sound like Lamb Of God :|
@FiniganMusic Haha, I was thinking that too! This lick is in E Phrygian dominant, which is based on the A minor scale. That one note makes it slightly major and messes up the mood entirely. Alternatively you would replace the F# with a F (or even an accented G if you want to get fancy).
Testament - 3 days in darkness inspired lick
AHHHH...Metal Mike...The Man The Myth The LEGEND.....Gotta love all things Metal Mike Chlasciak......Metal Guitar God!!!
Song at the start of that video please?
For whatever reason, the riffs slowed down sound better that played at full speed. Listen to it played at full speed 0:50 and then slowed down 1:10 it has that low E chunk and a nice easy riff. I love it! Mike is such a metal badass. More!
@69stringibanez but what about the times ya think its a potato and turns out t be a parsnip or something completely different? but i agree with you.
what is the most common guitar tunings in metal????
No means which model it is and how much it costs.
iI'm not quite sure what exact model it is, but it's a jackson king V, they range in price.
Testament is not only an influence to them, but Alex Skolnick is a friend of theirs. Into the Pit by Testament and Laid to Rest by Lamb of God has really close-sounding riffs. It's just a matter of influence.
tabs ?

@justdude45 i'm saying the same thing... the major 2 note completely screws up the mood...
Where can I find tabs for the riff?
Dude, I love your tone. I’d describe your tone as metal, like it sounds like metal, I don’t know if you know what I’m saying
So, Metal Mike is your name right? @beastH351 he's in D standard.
Wow, this is a great video lesson... for players who have been playing for 2 years or less.
Is that a riff e came up with in the beginning or is that a group doing it? If a group which one?
Testament - 3 days of darkness
killer tone!
is his guitar in drop tuning ?
Not sure the exact variation or series but you should be able to find a similar one
WHAT IS THE TUNING????
What guitar is that?
I think he means how much does it cost, and what kind of electric guitar it is..
There are a lot of metal genres, and even though one might prevail over the others in terms of popularity, this doesn't mean that the niche genres will disappear or won't evolve. It is 3 days in Darkness by Testament not like 3 days in Darkness
ever heard testament? LoG must have listened to that stuff all the time when they were younger, all i hear in LoG reminds me of them! testament has to be my all fav thrash metal band along with exodus and kreator.
what tuning are you in?
don't you mean F instead of a F# ? or is he tuned to D?
which guitar ist that? whats the name of it
what amp do you use
what tuning is this??
Tabs for this please???
I want the tab for this
there was no skipping that Mc Donalds add was there?
whats the tuning?
you can't have mega-metal without megadeth!
Hmmm, i listened again, E is wrong. It's this F# - 4th fret on the dropped-down E-String.
D is the keynote, so it cannot sound wrong ;)
tabs would be nice. I cant freaking tell what strings your hitting ..tabs??? please
the first riff is a copy of Testament's 3 days in Darkness
thank you for not starting a giant flame war like everyone else on this video
Thanks a lot man. Its awesome
Jackson Randy Rhoads. Not too sure as to which specific RR though, probably custom built. :P
@FiniganMusic THANK YOU! I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY PERSON THAT NOTICED!
the guitar Jackson Rhandy Rhoads, i personally like the Jackson King V better though ( just to let you know the other type of V )
What tuning is that played with
full step down :)
what does bvb even have to do with the video ?
The F# works even though it's unusal in metal. The E is what makes it sound happy rather than badass
Tono es C???
como logro tener ese sonido ?
am I the only one that just thought of 3 days in darkness by testament the entire time he played it?
@69stringibanez not exactly..if u remember there is different kinds of potatoes..they call them YAMS...
the riff sounds like there is one note from the major scale xD
yea that note made the riff sound totally gay :D
+arcykaplanhehe seriously though lol i like that little inspiration from the 3 days of darkness riff by testament but that note caught my ear like a screwdriver being shot out of a potato cannon into my eardrum lol guess i can't say it was wrong since everyone has their style but it sure sounded odd as shit to me lol too happy sounding for metal riff in my opinion
+arcykaplanhehe It's called harmonic minor, fucker. He didn't really do it right though, I'll give you that one.
lol this aint harmonic minor dude learn ur shit
+arcykaplanhehe hA HA;EXACTLY:):)L'APPEL dU VİDE knows nothing:):)The whole riff has nothing to do with armonic minor anyway:):),
wat tuning?
It sounds like slayers tuning you guys D sharp/ Half step down from standard tuning.
Nope. It's full step.
Metal Marauder Slayer typically plays in E flat
+conconexplosion d# is the same as eb
Pepe Returns I was replying to Metal Marauder
conconexplosion The guy in the video is a full step down.
@69stringibanez No, Megadeth and Slipknot are both metal, but guess which one of them sucks?
love your chain strap
His necklace is sick! Anybody here who knows where to get one like this?
Should i by a jackson
Do you think I'd know anything about what I'm saying if I didn't play guitar? yes you should. the necks are pure awesomeness.
@Mo7Vsta didnt he just said that
are his strings in backwards lol
I love the guitar strap he has!
Actually, I misunderstood your comment xD What I meant is that the tuning is Standard D/Drop D
Of those choices, I would pick Jackson, but Dean is me favorite. They feel so nice
@imantisocial I so agree, it should just be an f or something, not an f#. It makes it sound too...well happy.
Awesome!!! It sounds like Diezel amp.
@69stringibanez well, coming from some like Mike Chlasciak, who plays in the Halford band and other amazing bands, i would beleive him....
@machinegunmike95 I guess if that's the reason you (people who choose to play that way) play guitar.... or music in general.
Just different kind of metal - but all still metal! \m/
Those guitars have the best crunch
Why major 3rd!?!??
eww. Flat the g# ITS TOO HAPPY!!!!!!!
***** First thing I thought of as well, it's terrible
***** yes omg that sounds like ... not metal
***** That one note is the only thing that makes it any different from a thousand other metal riffs
***** I like it
+Andrew Emsley He's tuned down a whole step, so technically it's an f#.
The thing about this is the major scale lick in the lowest notes used in the riff... it sounds REALLY weird. I mean Devin uses major licks in metal but makes it sound huge and powerful that just sounds dorky no offense. I LOOOOVE the rhythms and other inflections tho dude holy fuck.

is kai hansen playing thrash now? xD
werry awesome
i know i will probably get a bit of hate for this, but i dont think of metalica/pantera/iron maiden as really 'metal, i think that the future lies with bands like Meshuggah/nociceptor/vidhjarta and other (i use the term lightly) Djent bands, or go more progressive with symphony X/dream theater/animals as leaders.
Yeah. I totally think he just changed two notes in figure one. He was totally playing Three Days In Darkness by Testament.
How's it pointless?
@Lichmaster777 problemo*
yeah i noticed that too.
@FadeToBlack181 sounds like prettymuch every other metal tone I've heard tbh
so what bands fall under false metal? never heard of that
Thank you captain.
3 days of darkness Testament??
Everyone's got their own taste. You have as much right to an opinion as me.
are their too simple basic videos with metal for beginners
Just replace the F# with an F and its fine. And Mike, I know you wanna reach out to beginners, but can you do something a little more complicated? Maybe something progressive like Dream Theatre or something Djenty like Meshuggah.
here we go
1) that first quote was said by me and i stand by it
2) the second quote is right. Djent as a sound is the chug with high riffs, (not coined by meshuggah, but close), Djent as a genre DOES include a lot of semitional melodies and DOES jake jazz and metal influences
3) if you go on my channel, you can see me (bass) and SupaSpireiteXx (guitar/vocals) not "touching any instruments in our lives'.
now go and do some research into some Djent that is not meshuggah and try again.
Well... they were once... I'm not sure what they are now, but either way, I like'em.
Indeed!
FUCK YEAH!!!! THIS IS TRUE FUCKING METAL!!!!! METAL MIKE IS FUCKING GREAT!!!!
The F# is wrong cause the riff is based on the half-whole tone scale not frygian or harmonic
It sounds so friggen happy.
