  • The Bunlahinch clapper bridge.
Near Killeen, Louisburgh, Bunlahinch, County Mayo stands this wonderful prehistoric form of stone bridge. Although this bridge is dated to around the 1840s, this constuction was quite common in pre-historic times. The word Clapper is said to originate in Sussex, England and means plank. Clapper bridges are made from a series of small pillars joined together by stone lintels laid across the top. This bridge is approximately two foot wide and about 150 foot in length.
The name Bunlahinch comes from the Irish "Bun na hInse" meaning bottom of the river meadow. 27.08.2017
