Hi Grim Reapers
Any chance of doing another "Red Storm Rising" video. How about doing the "Frisbee's of Dreamland" section where they take out the Soviet AEW's and then attack the Red AF aircraft on the W/E German border.
Cheers
the sr 71 had a process to get to mach 3 , from memory you climbed to altitude like a normal jet liner , nice and sedate , then tankered , after that you accelerate and did a maneuver called a dipsey where you make a series of dives and climbs , so like you tank at 25000 ft dive to mach 1 climb to like 40000 ft then dive 10000 ft and a final climb to altitude where you get mach 3 , like i said i cant remember the actual numbers its been like 20 years sine i even looked at the cover of take off magazine where i read this but thats the general jist of it ,,, you cant treat her as a normal fighter
Not that it probably would have mattered, but even if Cap had found the SR-72 on the F14's radar, he forgot to press the missile prep button so the phoenixes wouldn't have even been able to launch anyways lol.
lol well spotted! I think I would need a proper human RIO to even look high enough.
@@grimreapers Dunno bro, you can see you had jester set your radar to +30% elevation that's max deflection upwards. Most likely it's probably that the SR-72 moved so fast the comparatively (to more modern jets) slow azimuth sweep of TWS auto meant its position was so vastly different in between each sweep the radar just disregarded it as an impossible target.
Pure conjecture I know but it's a cold war radar vs an object travelling 3/4x the speed of the missiles the radar even launches, it never really had a chance.
F14 nerd in the house🤓
The SR71 is coming up to 70 years old but it still looks modern. Epic aircraft.
Back in my amature radio days, I received a QSO card from SR71 pilot. It was the pride of my collection. He wasn't flying at the time but that card was just so very very cool.
And the same concept used in it's engines is what's being reused for the NGAD, just with several decades of advancements.
@@darthkarl99 And I presume the Meteor missile as well (ramjet).
MSFS 2020 has the Maverick Darkstar from the movie and it's a Mach 10 jet. It's very hard to fly. If you take your attention away for just 30 seconds you will be miles off course. I have taken it to 200k feet and it's quite a ride. I could fly from LA to NY in 20 minutes (I think) You really need a global map to fly something that fast. In DCS the largest map can be traversed in just a few minutes. Cool video though!
Does DCS use a "flat Earth" model for its terrains, or is it using a WGS84 geoid?
@@drtidrow No idea. All I know is the largest map we have is the Syrian. Or maybe the Nevada. But they're like a thousand kilometers from corner to corner. Not big enough.
Well 6762 kts GS is around 3.5 km/s. That's almost half the speed necessary to get into Earth orbit...
@@valuedhumanoid6574 Late in the video, when they were trying for max altitude, it looked like the horizon was curved, so it looks like they're using some sort of curved-Earth model
As a person who has flown the longer routes, no it's a round earth model, and it's not hard to get back on course with the darkstar.@@drtidrow
As someone who's played 1000s of hours of Kerbal Space Program I loved this. You're basically shooting something in space which is going orbital speed around the scaled down planet.
I still gotta point out that the F-15 with an ASM-135 ASAT could shoot down a satellite IRL, so i think it could absolutely shoot down the slower SR-72 at a lower altitude since maneuvering isn't much of an issue.
Also Patriot wasn't designed for this. You'll have to get with CH to make an AEGIS BMD and THAAD to get something designed to do that.
Edit: AEGIS, not ARGIS
No it can't satilate missles are for taking out satilates that does a sutun trigectory which they can fire at what makes it impossible to hit is the closing speed that the sr72 does which the missile has to calculate which the satilate missles don't do
@@christopherfox7650If the SR-72 doesn't change course, it can still get hit
Again when it's moving at you that fast do you think it's a go straight into it no you have to calculate that's what missiles do it's not go straight into it and it'll hit it that's not how it works and also they are turning very very slightly but still
@@christopherfox7650 Considering SM-3 Block IIA is much newer than the ASM-135 and is currently under testing with countering the CCP's DF-ZF in mind (maneuverable hypersonic glide vehicle)----I think it could work, at least with the newest SM-3 block IIA model.
Probably it will probably because its made to take out icbms and ballistic missiles but that's a anti balistic missle we are talking about anti satilate missles
I wonder if SM-6 or SM-3 could intercept
the SM 3 BLOCK IIA would have a chance if it's fired ahead of time...missile has a speed of Mach 10....SM 6 flies at mach 3.5.
@@willwozniak2826 Mach 13.2, so yes even faster max speed than this SR-72-----also can go up to 3.4 million feet alt (1000 km).
Depends if Tom cruise is driving it
Sm3 has a speed off Mach 8 5000kts when they tested it
Yes I should have tested it.
In terms of SAMs, maybe try the SM-3 Block IIA (mach 13.2; 1,050 km ceiling) and SM-6 (Mach 3.5; ceiling >110,000 ft) from a Tico CMP or Burke Flight III DDG for a part 2 (that and other ship-based SAMs just to be thorough).
Sm-3 is meant for exo-atmospheric interceptors, to hit things in space. It's speed and altitude are insane, but I'm not sure it's able to to that in-atmopshere. I think the interceptor it deploys might get destroyed if released in the air.
@@d.thieud.1056
Technically the Block IIA ["next generation AEGIS missile" (NGAM)] isn't in service yet, so we'd have to wait and see what exactly the capabilities jump over the older Block I variants of SM-3 is.
Through I'm not sure what model of SM-3 is on CH's Tico CMP or flight III Burke in-game.
I think the SM3 has the best shot, maybe the ASM-135 launched from an F15. Considering how little it can maneuver and how thin the atmosphere is at 110,000 feet ASL, its more like an anti-sat kill
13:56 you can almost feel the missile throwing a tantrum, "NO NO NO *NOOOOO NO!!!* HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO CATCH THAT!!"
Hitting something that fast takes a completely different approach. You need get into its flight path, do very minor corrections and let it crash into you.
Yes, definitely. The SR-72 can't manouvre at that altitude and neither can the missile (much) so the only guaranteed kill is to get in front of it. I'm sure the tracking software of the missile can easily be changed in real life to identify a fast mover and fly up into its flight path, rather than trying to intercept at an angle.
It never made any sense to fly at 70-80k feet. Because the 1960s SR-71 could fly at 85k!!! The replacement would not be LESS capable than the 60 year older plane. I'm really happy you did this update. I would like to see another video at the same altitude but with slower speed like mach 6-10 range. Because I agree mach 12 might be a little too unrealistic
"I can barely see the Raptor in front of me . . . "
Well, the Raptor's a stealth aircraft, innit?
Guy are playing Kerbal Space Program here!
Now I want to see you guys build a bunch of fictional missiles and craft that actually could function at extremely high speeds and altitudes. Basically a look at what low orbit Space Force could be.
Why not Phoenix on the SR-71 ... after all the Phoenix was developed for the YF-12A wasn't it?
Good idea.
I talked to a guy who was a test pilot for a variety of black aircraft (can't be more specific sorry). he told me that he heard when the Lockheed guys pitched the SR72 years ago, and he told me they suggested it could fly at Mach 9.
There was a SR-71 pilot that commented on a GR video a while back. It was pretty awesome to read about his experiences in the aircraft
I am an avid cell phone watcher!!! But also just recently bought a pc/dcs/hotas after 3 years of watching y’all and growling sidewinder/dcs videos. Finally couldn’t take it anymore. I don’t even like computers but DCS was worth the headaches! Glad I finally pulled the trigger thanks
this is possible if a F-15A Eagle shooting the Solwind P78-1 satellite was achieved that may be the load-out you need you also may need to do the F-15x Climb record vector to get this intercept from ground
Brilliant!! Just brilliant!!! Thank you!
Thanks, Reapers! Great sim. Well, they're all great. I only support three YT channels on Patreon, and I'm happy to say that this is one of them. Nice work! 😊
awww xx
I love how long it takes to hear the boom after he passes in the SR72 lol
You guys need to build a ASM-135 ASAT in game. At Mach 12 and 110,000 ft that's the only thing I can think of to kill it.
I don't think we can get the guidance to work in game like it did in real life :(
Did ya ever wonder why Maverick carries his helmet after he crashes? You’d think that’s the last thing he’d wanna carry 😊
Important question.
Been missing the ordure's, thanks Cap.
More entertaining dialog… “Grumps 70 mile member…”. As always, a great and fun video. Well done GR!
Good to hear Grump back in action :)
😁
The hundreds of videos I have watched on this channel have all been on my cellphone. Gives me something to do when I play fetch with my dogs.
Super fun video!
You need to model THAAD and try that against the sr-72 and against the kh-47
Or Skyhunter & David's Sling, plus Arrow 3 & 4
Would love to see what might be the combat perimeters of the SR-72. Maximum combat cruise speed of Mach 5.3, but at 140,000 feet.
Ya that was very Interesting....
Y’all gotta go read the new Tom Clancy and get a corvair!!
SPEED IZ LIFE!!!!! ;) Cool VID CAP!!
GBI (US' midcourse phase BMD) might be able to do it. GBI apparently can get up to like mach 30 or similar. Obviously meant to do exoatmospheric intercepts IRL, but could be a funny thing to simulate.
Simba makes it into the box quicker than most mortal men.
I think you need to revisit the NGAD versus F-22 fight.
NGAD should be far stealthier and faster than it was. Throw in a fistful of loyal wingman drones and you'll have a much more accurate to life simulation.
Give the NGAD two AIM missiles for long-distance attacks and the rest Peregrines for close-in attack.
I think this would be the most intelligent balance.
Kill at a distance and ram right into the middle of the enemy, to spam them with Peregrines.
Yup working on NGAD now.
Oooh a new video
I wonder if the altitude desync stopped the missiles from tracking it as the server seemed to cap altitude on its end at around 107500 ft up. Maybe limiting the SR72 to 100000 ft would get a different result?
I do often watch the video on my way home from work then finish it on my tv when I get home.
SR 72 vs Ticonderoga with the anti ballistic missile loadout might have a chance...
Yup I should have thought of that...
I only watch on cell phones. You're my lunch break!
What about SR-72 Vs a variety of ships , it would give a clear idea of how ships could deal with hypersonic anti ship missiles since the missiles we currently have don't behave as they should
ok, that's the best autocorrect I've seen in a while. If the enemy comes up with hypertension missiles, we have real problems. 😅
Yup can try.
I wonder if you could use a missle that will go pit bull and just lob it up there infront of the SR72 and see if it will work that way
Could F-15As equipped with ASM-135 ASAT anti-satellite missiles intercept the SR-72?
I wish you would add an F-106A Delta Dart and F-101 Voodoo to the squadron
I now want to see a full out simulated battle. I want to see the Sr-72 fully kitted out with stealth and payload with strict mission parameters and a true team attempt to intercept.
One missile "air-to-air" missile was developed and tested that would certainly have been able to shoot this target down: the ASM-135 ASAT (anti-satellite) missile. The 2,600 pound missile had an operational range of 403 miles, a service ceiling of 350 miles (1.8 million feet!), and a top speed of Mach 12. In 1985 a specially modified F-15A, dubbed the "Celestial Eagle" launched an ASM-135 while in a 65 degree zoom climb at Mach 1 through 38,000 feet and destroyed a satellite orbiting at an altitude of 345 miles.
Idk why but i would love to see a damn space shuttle in this game
Definitely curious about Burke BMD capable w/SM-3...
rgr
I see you read Weapons Grade by Don Bentley. Or the recent interview he did with Sandboxx talking about hypersonic drones.
just too cool . . .
In a tiff with the Laws of Physics I regret to inform there will only ever be one result....same winner every time ! 😂
That missile going up +/- 300'000 feet, literally touched the edge space, if space is considered to start at around 100KM straight up.
9:10 time to get the F15 with the anto-sattelite missile out
So with the SR-71, you're basically modeling an F-12 with updated avionics.
Would having an AWAC and data link have helped?
I'd like to see it used as a Bomber!
Not sure we'll be very accurate from 110,000ft.
@@grimreapers lol the mach 6 version, and you maybe surprised as this aircraft is planned not only for reconnaissance but also a strategic bomber ;)
Those AIM 260s did make it to space.
Holy hell that's so fast 😂
26:12 Meep friggin' meep, indeed. 🤣
Grump should have opened the canopy at 182,000 ft and then ejected. :D
Oh I ejected alright.
@@WyvernFalken, it happens. At least you got it up that high.
That's getting close to orbital speeds. Does DCS take orbital mechanics into account for things effective weight of the aircraft? What about Coriolis effects (for north/south flights)?
Sorry, not even close to orbital speed. At those altitudes orbital velocity is almost 18,000mph.
@@rapid13 IIRC the SR-72 in the sim was doing between 1/3 and 1/2 of that. That's usually close enough to start having noticeable effects (even if they aren't dominating).
@@benjaminshropshire2900 Barely 1/3, and really that has nothing to do with the Coriolis effect. Prevailing winds will have a much greater effect, for one thing. Also, the plane would have to be aloft for a long time flying in a straight line to notice any flight path deviation due to Coriolis forces.
@@rapid13 at 1/3 of orbital velocity, the apparent weight of an object in level flight should be just over 11% lower. I'd call that significant. And I'm mostly interested in if they include the effects. I'm not saying it's a bug if they don't.
No idea but I doubt it. Nothing in DCS is supposed to go this high/fast.
Chuck Norris could bring it down with a baseball from his basement.
Nah to much effort, he'd just snap a beer bottle cap at it 😎
Awesome, this is basic the top gun darkstar ya?
Yup
We've heard about the Baltic Express!
Now get ready for the Meepmeep Express!
I wonder if awacs guided missiles would fare any better?
I'm guessing, not really? Because the missile just isn't built to calculate that far into the future.
And.. wow these speeds really makes a mess of things. If it wasn't for GPS , how would you even navigate a plane going that fast? Because the inertia gyro thingamabob would get out of sync so fast. (how did the SR71 do it? look out the window?)
Can you do pak dp mig 41 vs mach 12 sr72 darkstar please because I heard a lot on news it was expected to carry kinzal air to ground mach 12 capable missile and improved R37M missile so built a video of that.
I haven’t seen violet moon and the damp one (damp sock) in a what feels like months. Are they not flying anymore?
Sock has gone back to college. Not sure if we'll see Violet again.
Someone needs to make the asf-14 super tomcat with updated missiles and try this
Do strap a gun to it and do a SR-72 vs SR-72 dogfight
Ooof dogfight with a 500 miles turning circle...
@@grimreapers yes! You can pull an offset 2 C
I like the Roadrunner reference 😂 (look up 1129th SAS guys 😂😂)
I wonder if you could get an AWACS data link shot. Max speed raptor at angels60 same vector bulldog shot from in front of the target. Leading the target for a datalink kill?
If any of that makes sense without drawing it on a cocktail napkin.
Good point.
you should try the english electric lightning😁
I'd bet it's not just a math issue - if the missile should be going up and then coming down on the target, how likely is it that there's simply not enough travel time at their speeds to accomplish the maneuver. Could also be why they're flying straight at it, only way they'd have a chance at even getting to it.
+GrimReapersAtomic *The best interceptors for the USAF / Lockheed Martin SR-72 Alfa are the Boeing F-15 Xray and the Mikojan-Gurevich-31 Serijnogo Modernizatovenn'yj Forsirovann'yj.* The Federal Russian Aerospace Forces / Sukhoi-57 Forsirovann'yj and U. S. Air Force / Lockheed Martin F-22 Alfa are speed-limited by their coatings. The USAF / Lockheed California YF-12 Alfa needs an accurate cockpit modeled after the SR-71.
Much better
were can I get the improved sr-72 version?
I’ve been asking the same thing
I guess you already know this, but in 1985 an F-15 shot down a satellite in orbit going 17,500mph at 345,00ft using a specially designed missile. That's actually much faster/higher than the SR-72 in your simulation and we did it in real life almost 40 years ago. If we need to, we'll find a way, don't you worry.
What if you flew at the same vector as the Darkstar while climbing? Come up from beneath and behind Darkstar so that your missiles do not have to pull a 180 to intercept?
Even the missiles arent fast enough for that
182000-ft = 34.4-mi. 😁
The edge of space (The Kármán line): 100 kilometres (54 nautical miles; 62 miles; 330,000 feet)🤯
So that one missile did infact reach space
Would love to see the SR72 fly as fast as poss near the deck, maybe a better sense of speed?I know in the thicker air it won't be 6500kn, but still impressive
I don't think it could even get supersonic at low level, same as Blackbird. It doesn't have as much thrust as most fighters, it relies on trick engines that work at high altitude.
Can only just make Mach 1 at sea level due to air pressure.
Hey cap, nice video as always!
I've got a viewer request for you: last night my city was attacked with a bunch of shaheds, and that got me wondering: could you intercept and destroy a flock of those drones with a bunch of helicopters having side door gunners like mi-8? Conaidering jets can't quite sustain the speeds to effectively stay on the tail of the drone, could you use mi-8 to navigate to interception course and do a "drive-by", since mi-8 can both exceed the speed of the drone and feel quite comfortable maintaining the speed of the drone?
Great idea!
You need to make a video about the lost F 35B over South Carolina
grump is seriously my favorite
I think you're going to need a TIE Interceptor for this job. Mikoyan is supposedly working on a further development of the MiG-25/31 that's going to have hypersonic missiles and will be capable of Mach 4+. Who knows if they will really build it. Unless oil prices climb over $100/barrel and stay there for a long time I doubt they will have the money.
I would like to see it pass directly over a line of legacy ships ending up with a CMP and see if it can make it over.
if you end up redoing the drag race and add the sr72 its going to be a sr72 win without a doubt
Well it carries soooo much fuel that it will actually accelerate REALLY slowly.
has anyone modeled THAAD in DCS? the THAAD system was originally designed to intercept ICBMs, which travel very high and very fast. I don't know the details of the THAAD, but it seems to me that it would probably have a better chance at intercepting the sr-72
How about at what mach number can the sr72 get caught?....and what altitude?
It felt like we were at the limit when we intercepted it at mach 6 80,000ft TBH.
I think the only thing I am curious about now if it can shoot down SR-72 is SM3.
Could you try this again but start the intercept at the interceptor max altitude instead of taking off from an airfield?
We try this near the end of the vid.
Need to model in the (potential) Mach 4.1, MiG-41. With the most advanced hypersonic AAM's that Russia currently has.
Dude, don’t bother. Highest exactly they give it is a little bit higher than the raptor since they can’t give the SU-57M modeled
This... but have the interceptors use AIM54 with a ASAT launch profile. Or, B1's as max speed and altitude, spamming meteor and phoenix.
Can you do how far can Partrio see the J-20 or Su-57?
I'm curious if the Russian equipment was modeled with the Russian Units or if they have been converted into normal/realistic/not trying to export equipment/ scientific units?
Agreed, a few eggs need to be broken for genius. Just wondering where the genius is.
You should also improve the SR-71 cockpit. It will change the viewer experience. Thank you
The answer seems simple, F-15 EXs with Genie rockets : }!
Jeez, DCS now needs OTH radar and sensor fusion 🤷🏻♂️
YF12 needs more runup to get up to speed
No chance anything could defeat this
You should be able to see him in broad daylight.
At Mach 12 he should light up like a meteor.
Is the "turning left" thing because of the Coriolis force?
No idea.
