This is a great tutorial; right on time for holiday ideas. I like your teaching methods and the mug rugs are so cute! Thank you for your time and efforts!
Hi Sherrill, Great job & you gave me an idea. My sister breeds real caterpillar/butterfly with her milkweed plants so I loved how you tilted the stocking on the coaster & will take my butterfly cookie cutter & place cut fabric on diagonally to coaster square or octagon. Her BDay is next month so I'd better get busy! Thanks for your great suggestions & fun ideas.🥰
Sherrill you are my inspiration for so many reasons. Thank you so much for helping me get through my depression and grief from losing my daughter during Covid. Sewing has helped me to get through the pain and give to others who love my handmade products. Thank you!
Hi Sheila. I am so sorry for your loss. I am very glad that sewing has helped you get through a very tough time. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Really cute mug rugs! I belong to a tea group and these make terrific gifts and I am always looking for different ideas. I really like the self binding on these. Thanks for excellent content!
Really, I’m the first one to comment!! As always a great tutorial. I’ve made several mug rugs since seeing your other video. They are fun to make and everyone appreciates receiving them, especially ones who work at a desk. Thank You. 🌻
Thank you, madam. I discovered your channel by chance. Your work deserves thanks and support. Ideas are amazing. Greetings to you from Algeria 🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿
Great tutorial! Thanks so much for all the wonderful tips. I especially like the one where you sew a backing to the right side of an appliqué piece, then turn it so the right side is on top. No raw edges on the appliqué to deal with! I love it!!!
I love making mug rugs and coasters. Have you ever made the coasters using 7 hexagons and you only have one seam? They're fast and easy and don't need any batting. If you have made them maybe your guests would like to see a tutorial on how to make them 🙂
I just stumbled across your channel. Absolutely love what I’ve seen so far. I e been quilting for a bit now, but your tutorials on the projects such as this and a table topper that I’m following and making right now is very easy to understand. You explain things very well and detailed. I like that you give tips and other options as well. I just subscribed!
Hi Cecily. It is a sewing machine blanket stitch. The machine goes back and forth several times on each stitch, and that is what makes it look like heavier thread. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
If you do the blanket stitch by hand you can use embroidery thread, or Perle thread. It's not very hard to do by hand. I find it more accurate and since I'm still a novice I find doing the blanket stitch by machine kinda hard. Especially with curves.
Hi Sherrill 😊 👋 l just love your mug rug and coaster 😍😃 l'm going to make some of those as Christmas gifts 🎁 👍such a great idea 😊 l've made place mats but not these and I can put some applique on them applique is one of my favourite things to sew 😀 you've got a beautiful selection of fabric Sherrill 😍 as far as l'm concerned you can never have enough fabric 😃 thankyou sweet lady for your wonderful ideas 👍always enjoy your videos 🤗 ok you and Manny and Scotty and your family 👪 take care and l hope you all have a fabulous weekend 🥰💖🌻🌸🦋🌞💗🌻🌸🦋🌞💞. 🌼Daisy Dale from downunder 🐨 🦘 Australia.
Excellent vid! I have some old panel fabric I will be breaking out and will probably buy more with this idea to use them as appliques. I'm wondering what type of thread was used to do the blanket stitch - looks way thicker than regular thread. Must need a bigger needle also.
Hi Dlwrules. I would stitch your embroidery design out first, then cut the fabric to fit the size of you design. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Hi Amaury. The blanket stitch on my Viking Sapphire sewing machine stitches 2 to 3 time for each blanket stitch. That is why it looks so thick. I am just using your standard Coasts and Clark thread. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍

I've been doing a few now, using 8 inch square as a starting size. Trimming sometimes shrinks that down after quilting and adding binding

Can a person use embroidery thread to stitch around a applique?
I've seen it done I just don't have any of the floss stuff.
Hi Portia. Yes you can do a hand applique stitch using embroidery floss. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Thank you for the tutorial. This is very helpful. How do you do this if you want to embellish with a machine embroidery design?
Hi Dlwrules. I would stitch your embroidery design out first, then cut the fabric to fit the size of you design. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Beautiful! Is that Pumpkin Spice fabric from Walmart? I love it!!!
Hi Grace. I purchased it last year from Joann Fabrics and Crafts. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
Nice mug rugs, thank you!Could you indicate what thicker thread you used for the blanket stitch, please?
The blanket stitch repeats itself in one stitch so it makes it look thicker.
Hi Amaury. The blanket stitch on my Viking Sapphire sewing machine stitches 2 to 3 time for each blanket stitch. That is why it looks so thick. I am just using your standard Coasts and Clark thread. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍

Ooooo so dangerous to the bank account to go to etsy and type in Christmas panel fabric, lol.

HI Yeaz. I purchased this fabric last year from Joann Fabrics and Crafts. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
If you have a serger, do you recommend serging the edges?
I either straight or zig zag edges prior to binding as it flattens it down , making pinning 📌 📍 it easier
Hi Andrea. You can serge the edges, but I usually don't. Thanks for watching, and happy sewing. 😍
