I recently flew in from Austin Texas to Washington D.C. just to see this exact act perform at the HAMILTON in Washington DC . Off the charts PHENOMENAL. I had to remember to BREATHE at times and I have seen HUNDREDS of classical and Jazz Pianists and Organists in over 80 countries. Later on, during the signing of his CD TRIP MODE (fantastic by the way), I told him that I was so honored to see him perform and that I flew in just to see him. He didn't believe it. He thought I was kidding. But he was awesome. Humble. He did not think that was possible. He is traveling a lot right now - mostly outside the U.S. - It is amazing that Jazz, a form of music that was INVENTED in the U.S. is now more appreciated in Europe and elsewhere - while we listen to RAP and other banalities of Pop music. Makes no sense to me. Joey DeFrancesco performed flawlessly. Perfect. So emotional, so beautifully. His 4/16 and 4/32 speeds at times made me stop breathing until he finished - and I hold a Grad Degree in Music Composition from the Conservatory of Paris. NO ONE COMPARES. NO ONE! In my humble estimate, Joey DeFrancesco today, is the best B3 Organist in the world, hands down. This trio (which is becoming a quartet by the way - as they introduced that at the Hamilton) was spectacular. If you have the change to see it live, do it. WORTH THE TRAVEL. And buy the CD. Don't rip the CD - BUY the CD. Performers like that should be paid. These guys put their heart and soul in this. SO much work.
Pierre - you name it! I had the privilige and pleasure to enjoy These guys in two recent Editions of the JazzCruise - amazing, moving, unforgettable. Couldn't get enough - and they had played four times in each cruise week.
The US of A' abandoned it's afro-american greats whenever it was expedient. France (Basie), UK (Hendrix), Italy (festivals), and Japan (Miles, Herbie) all helped in saving our musicians. Music for people. Peace and love
Hearing of Joey’s passing just broke my heart. I met him many, many years ago in Philly. He was just a young kid, maybe 12 years old. He played piano when I saw him and he was already a beast. Joey was without a doubt the most important organist in Jazz history. And in my humble opinion, he and Richard “Groove” Holmes were the most swinging musicians on that instrument. And it wasn’t simply a matter of chops. Joey always communicated a sense of joy with his music. His audience loved him. He was a humble, kind and joyful man. He remains a blessing in my life.
Joey DeFrancesco is so heavy ... A timeless vibe as an organ player ... and check out his trumpet solo at 31:25. Dude made the trumpet sound great... incredible
Beautiful singing! Left foot pedal bass, left hand chords, right hand trumpet!? Never heard anything like this. Even the left foot laying down the bass line while playing the trumpet independently is really musically remarkable.
0:16 just tippin - guitar solo 5:00 12:11 wives and lovers - guitar solo 15:20 25:49 for all we know - guitar solo 28:49 35:40 knock twice (f blues) - guitar solo 41:23 48:57 let's go (rhythm changes) - guitar solo 51:51
Great stuff and wonderful song that one "for all we know" I'm impressed by Joey's ability to play bass with the left hand while doing all that other stuff in the right hand
+Bob Cardone Johnny Hammond Smith, Jimmy Smith, Richard Groove Holmes, Earl Fatha Hines, just for starters...there's no shortage of great organ players before him. "Best" is too subjective and personal to the individual. But yeah, I dig JD - too. Wes would have dug playing with JD I'm sure. They both loved the blues!
+organfreak Joey is often described as a disciple of Jimmy Smith. Perhaps he was not literally, but he was heavily influenced by Jimmy. Also, Jimmy's pedal technique is incredible, leaving the left hand open for harmony, while Joey plays the bass more with the left hand.
Was watching & listening to Pat Martino and Scofield sinking their teeth in 'Sunny' on youtube.. it featered this Joey De. Glad i looked up some more of him. Awesome musician. So is Dan Wilson.Pleasantly surprised !
Oh ! quel gigantesque talent, ce Mr Joey De Francesco !! il sait tout faire à la perfection, c'est saisissant. Bravo l'artiste et ses musiciens avec lui !!
Yeah, I agree, Joey's left hand bassline-playing is awesome, but alas, he's a foot-faker, or at least he used to be. Ya know: dandling and wriggling his foot over the pedals to make it look as if he's actually playing them when.... he's not. The father of the whole modern tradition of Jazz-Pop organ playing is Wild Bill Davis, and that guy actually did play the pedals, as did Jackie Davis, Milt Buckner, Billy Preston, and, I believe, Jimmy McGriff. One of the more famous foot-fakers was the egregiously over-rated Jimmy Smith, but let's not dwell on that wanker; Joey DeFrancesco is many times the organist that Jimmy Smith ever was. It's all about the musicianship, and THAT is on glorious display here. Fabulous band.
I had an uncle who played just like that he had only had 3 piano Lessons and the music just flowed in him and through him. Joey was a truly gifted musician. Naturally the guitarist and drummer would have to be top notch musicians to keep up with him and boy do they do that with totally mastery. So blessed to be alive and hear music and musicianship of this highest calibre.
You have to catch his new young guitar player Dan Wilson. He is fantastic with many echoes, of Grant Green. But even moreso from Dan Wilson himself. The most exciting new jazz guitar player, in my world.
Man, I would love the chance to play with Joey. Jason Brown is killin it. Playing the right stuff...rather than shreading over tunes like so many guys do lately. Beautiful drumming.
I got to stand between Joey D and Tony Monaco on side-by-side Hammonds at NAMM 2005 while they played "Rhythm'a'ning!", which I can best describe as "like standing in the middle of a blowtorch fight". It just kind of happened around me.
Sitting here in India so faraway I just dream that one day I will catch DeFrancesco live..but I have so many of CDs and look up YuTube several times for his live concerts...
Fantastic Mr. D ! This is the best on YT I've ever seen you play for intensity and pure stream of consciousness. And Dan Wilson is seriously getting his Wes and GB sh_t together here, really sweet playing like Russel Malone; savage !! And I love Jason Brown, the laid back Jack de Johnette. Wonderful thanks for posting ! peace world
Man…..I’ve worked with so many pianists who “kick” left hand bass, plus I play piano and have to do it myself on gigs, but this guy has, in my opinion, the strongest, most grooving left hand in the business. If there’s someone better, I’m sure that someone reading this post will let me hear about it.
How much can you build a tune? I was worn out half way through Joey DeFrancesco's first solo! He is so far beyond being "just" an organ player. Dan Wilson is a new guitar hero, and Jason Brown makes this feel so good.
Some may not realize that the trumpet has to play in adifferent key (up a whole step) so Joey has to play and think in two keys at the same time, amazing.
It could be a C Trumpet!..... but I don't think it is. still, I'm impressed that you (apparently a sax player) considered that potential difficulty. For a sax player, that's quite honorable. I mean really, you guys have it disgustingly easy: all saxes, from giant to tiny, have the same layout of keys (in this case, the things on the instrument you press down with your fingers), the same fingering, the same range (each in its given register); the written music is always in treble clef, and the bottom and top notes on the staff are the same in the score for all saxes. Easy as can be; the only instrument easier is guitar or maybe ukelele. Try accordion or pedal steel guitar! You'd have a nervous breakdown!
Joey - You have passed Master and blown into some new space. Dan, he plays right along you and sorry missed drummer’s name, awesome too!! Keep on bro’s
trop bon... quel régal pour les oreilles...bon après si le guitariste et le batteur pouvait nous faire un petit sourire, y aurait absolument plus rien à rajouter....SUPER MOMENT MERCI
Joey's talent is overflowing! I just heard the sad news. I'm shattered.
Can't believe this guy is gone. Such a loss for the music world. RIP Joey
Neither can I. What a brilliantly talented keyboardist.
Oops? When? Several years not being part of Java Jazz got lost so many news. RIP Joey.
@@paulwangmacbookprowidjaja7640 Back in august 2022. Its crazy its been almost two years already. RIP
You will truly be missed Joey
This is the most I've missed live music since the beginning of the pandemic
This still hurts. Haven’t been able to listen to his music. I constantly spoke with him on FB. Pleasant dude. RIPJOEYD
Jason Brown is the best drummer I've heard in a long time! Intense and always on top of things. You can see him thinking and hear him delivering.
Amaaaazing!!

Pretty glowing testimony! But I'm not arguing with anything you said, right on.
Hey man, don't bash rap as a whole... check out producer J Dilla, most jazz musicians love his stuff. The continuation of jazz.
definitely Joey is the best Jazz organist in the world, outstanding style and a technique which is simply gorgeous!
The US of A' abandoned it's afro-american greats whenever it was expedient. France (Basie), UK (Hendrix), Italy (festivals), and Japan (Miles, Herbie) all helped in saving our musicians. Music for people. Peace and love
The best ever organ drums guitar combo.

NEVUHHH ignore Larry Young - the Trane of B3
Joey always played with the best musicians, these guys are no exception. Jumpin hot.
These guys are so cool. I could listen to them all day. My kinda music!
Sorely missed Joey D! RIP with the other legends ups there!
I saw Joey several years ago in Florida. I enjoyed it but this Trio is better. Magic happens when these guys get on the stage.
Joey DeFrancesco is so heavy ... A timeless vibe as an organ player ... and check out his trumpet solo at 31:25. Dude made the trumpet sound great... incredible
Thanks Joey D.!
Beautiful singing! Left foot pedal bass, left hand chords, right hand trumpet!? Never heard anything like this. Even the left foot laying down the bass line while playing the trumpet independently is really musically remarkable.
OMG I found it! The Sound of Jazz and organ I been hunting for. Perfect. This is organ well. Very well. Perfect.

Must be a guitarist :) Dan Wilson is fantastic!
Thank you!
Saw him live with Pat Martino years ago in Minneapolis, MN. Best Jazz live concert I have seen ever.
Bravo Bravo Bravo. Superb, A Musical. Giant of this Lovely Instrument. Thank you for posting.
Joe Saulsbury
Great stuff and wonderful song that one "for all we know"
I'm impressed by Joey's ability to play bass with the left hand while doing all that other stuff in the right hand
To say that Joey D is the best B-3 player ever, is an understatement.
+Bob Cardone : Yep, probably..
+Bob Cardone He was taught almost everything he knows by Jimmy Smith.
+PointyTailofSatan Sorry, that's just not true.

Oh ! quel gigantesque talent, ce Mr Joey De Francesco !! il sait tout faire à la perfection, c'est saisissant. Bravo l'artiste et ses musiciens avec lui !!
I love this trio , so much passion and humility
killer Joey Trumpet solo included and band
Just 1 word: PHENOMENAL!!!!!
Amazing bass lines also. Incredible.

Man, I would love the chance to play with Joey. Jason Brown is killin it. Playing the right stuff...rather than shreading over tunes like so many guys do lately. Beautiful drumming.
