  • I had a “phantom paper jam” issue. The ET-8550 kept throwing a paper jam error with no paper inside. My solution was found in a tiny mis-aligned gear. Thanks to / keithcooper for all his great videos they helped in finding the solution!

    Amazing, thank you so much for making this quick video! I was in the middle of a big batch print for a time sensitive project and heard a pretty loud snap noise mid print, then my printer proceeded to get stuck in phantom paper jam mode. I checked the gear mentioned here and that's exactly what my problem was. Mine had slipped quite a ways off but was still on the rod thankfully. I just gave it a good firm push and was able to get it back in line and paper jam was fixed. Thanks!

      No problem! Happy this little fix I found could be of some help. It’s odd that the little gear has no real way of staying in place. I’ve found that every 100-150 prints will lead to the gear mis-aligning again. But just pop back into place and good as new for another 100-150 prints 👍

    hey thanks for making this video for the Epson 8550! I ran into the same problem and didn't know what to do since there was no paper jammed in any of the feeders. I called Epson customer service and what they wanted to do was replace my printer, well they wanted me to email them a photo of my serial # and photo's of the cables underneath by the printer cartridge.... they took for ever to reply so I ended up calling after a day. they told me that they did not received the photos. ugh. anyways I started googling on how to paper jam and found this video and thank god it worked! it's happened a few times again but this trick here works well every time. I wish it didn't happen at all but I guess it does when printing with sublimation paper. not sure. thank you again.

    I had the same issue, not sure if it is because I print on cardstock regularly. I noticed a couple days before my printer stopped printing that it was making a funny mechanical noise. My printer kept complaining about a printer jam, and I could not find any trace of paper inside the printer. Rear tray, manual tray and main tray did not print due to a paper jam error. Thanks for the tip. That little gear's location made the difference. I tried a few times to slide it over however the gears maybe was not aligned properly. During the clear paper jam cycle I can slide the print head easily out of the way to access the gears on the right hand side behind the resting spot of the print head. I decided that perhaps the gears were not sufficiently aligned to allow me to move the small front gear all the way to the left onto the other cog. What worked for me is that I allowed the printer to clear the jam a few additional times and I think that allowed the gears that I needed to be aligned better. After a few tries I was easily able to slide the gear over as described in the video.

      This happens to me every once in a while. I'd say every 100 prints or so. You're right. Sometimes the gears are mis-aligned. I personally wiggle the loose gear back and forth (not enough to let it fall off the rod) until it aligns. Seems to work. I'm happy this has helped you! Thanks for the additional ideas!

      Just had a thought. Where were you feeding the paper from? The rear feed (where the paper feeds from the top - down) or from the manual feed (feeding the paper one sheet at a time horizontally with the rear door open)? If you were using the manual feed, it may be a paper selection issue. In my experience, it is very important to make sure you make the proper paper selection when using manual feed. Using Auto Select for paper type when manually feeding causes a lot of random paper jam errors it seems. Just a thought. Hopefully may be of some use.

    Just wanted to add something here.
    In the front of the ET-8550, there are TWO paper trays. Upper tray, and lower.
    MAKE SURE the upper tray (labeled "1") is not pushed in, and is aligned properly.
    I was facing the same false paper jam error, and nothing was working.
    Somehow, I noticed that tray 1 was pushed in too far.
    Pulled it out, realigned it, turned the printer back on, and no more paper jam error.

    • @mcclellandmediaprints
      @mcclellandmediaprints  Год назад

      The method that I use is this:
      1) unplug the printer.
      2) with the lid open and the print head visible, plug the printer back in.
      3) after a few seconds, the print head will move to the far left. As soon as it is all the way to the left, unplug the printer again. Now you have access to the gear.
      I will note that occasionally (depending on your timing) the print head will stop on top of some of the gears on the left. When you plug the printer back in, those gears on the left may start grinding against the print head. If this happens, I usually do a print head cleaning and also make sure it is properly aligned.

    • @austinandjessicamcclelland
      @austinandjessicamcclelland 2 года назад +1

      I learned this method from one of Keith Cooper’s videos (ruclips.net/user/KeithCooper).
      1) open the top lid so you can see inside to the print head.
      2) unplug the power. Wait a few seconds and plug it back in.
      3) when the printer runs it’s starting cycle, the print head will slide all the way to the left for a second. When the print head is on the left side, unplug the printer again. The print head will be fixed to the left for the moment.
      4) go ahead with the fix to the gear.
      5) when finished, plug the printer in again. The printer will run a slightly longer starting cycle since it was unplugged during its last starting cycle.
      Occasionally, when doing this, one of the gears on the left side will turn and make a horrible clicking sound against the print head. Most of the time, this doesn’t happen, but occasionally it does.
      I have absolutely no idea if this damages anything. But I’ve been doing this for a year now with no problems.

    • @mcclellandmediaprints
      @mcclellandmediaprints  Год назад

      I don't usually get a code when it shows the paper jam. But maybe I just didn't notice. As far as the print head is concerned over on Keith Cooper's page (link in the description), he has some instructions for how to get the print head to the side. It is not manually moveable (to my knowledge). The basic trick is to unplug the printer then plug it back in. A few seconds will pass and the print head will run to the left side of the printer. As soon as it reaches the left side, unplug the printer again. Now the print head is stuck on the left side and you can access the gears shown in the video. One important note: If you don't stop the print head when it is EXACTLY flush with the left side, the gears on the left side of the printer may begin grinding against the print head when you fire it up again. If this happens, it will most likely miss-align the print head. I most certainly run a print head alignment and cleaning from the Settings until everything is printing normal again.

    • @mcclellandmediaprints

      I might suggest double checking. That back gear has two “levels” on it. The wider part on the left of the back gear is the one that the front gear needs to align with. Other than that, I’ve had even the smallest pieces of paper jam the mechanisms. I usually fish around with a flashlight to check for tiny bits of paper that may have made their way through that back feed for the paper.

    • @cutups
      @cutups Год назад

      Kind of a random question - but can you safely turn the printer upside down and "shake it"? I think there's a small chance something fell into the printer while it was open (literally a nut). I can't see anything in there but maybe it's stuck down inside, and turning it upside down seems like it would at least rule it out. But seems questionable with the inks.

    • @mcclellandmediaprints
      @mcclellandmediaprints  Год назад

      @@cutups I dropped a Philips head screw driver bit inside one time when I was fixing something above the printer. Lesson learned to always keep the lid shut, lol. I used a magnetized tool to retrieve it. Took hours to fish it out though.
      If it is a nut (food) I’d advise a flashlight and long tweezers. Popping open the very back for feeding flat sheets horizontally will give quite a bit more view to the innards of the printer. That’s what I did. Doesn’t give the best angle for retrieval, but it does give a good view to see when fishing from the top.
      Personally, I wouldn’t advise turning it upside down. That has quite a bit of potential for damage with inks and such.
      Of course, I have to note that I have no idea if fishing around in the innards of the printer voids any warranties. But personally, I’m the type to fix it myself anyway 🤷‍♂️

    • @mcclellandmediaprints

      In my personal experience, this was the issue for this error. There are three paper feeds for this printer. One in the front, one through the top, and one from the rear (have to remove back cover). In my case, I was printing 11x14 from the top. But on one of the prints, the paper feed accidentally sucked some 8.5x11 paper that was in the bottom tray for the front feed at the same time that it was feeding paper from the top. This caused the 8.5x11 paper to jam in the mechanism and block the 11x14 paper from feeding down. I now remove all paper from the front feeder tray to avoid this issue when printing from the top. Depending on how bad the jam is, it may be fixed one of two ways. First, simply remove all paper from the top feed, turn off the printer, then turn it on. Sometimes it will push the jammed paper out from the front. Second (if the first method didn’t work), I remove the back plate from the printer and look for the jammed paper. Once found, I remove it as carefully as possible. Of course, if the paper is able to be removed from the top by lifting the top lid, I will usually do that as it is easier. After everything is fixed, I run an alignment and printer head test as it usually has resulted in some issues for one reason or another. Hope this helps.

      An odd problem indeed. Here is my personal checklist for this. #1 check to make sure Cassette 1 is aligned properly. That cassette can be a real problem. It doesn't have a stop when pushing the Cassette inside. If it is even a millimeter too far inside or too far outside, nothing will work. #2 double check that the rear door of the printer is fully in place. If you have removed the back of the printer to try to clear a paper jam or have removed it to do manual feed prints, the back door may be slightly mis-aligned or loose. This has gears for the paper feed(s) that could cause this problem. #3 check to make sure a small piece of paper isn't loose inside the paper feed mechanism(s). I once had a little half inch square piece of paper that feel inside and jammed the whole printer. I could barely see it.
      Hopefully one of these may help.

I've tried everything, pushing the paper in to the casette as far as it will go, just loading one peice, loading it with 25 etc. The feeder will just not pick up the paper (it's just basic A4 plain paper). Surely two printers cannot be faulty with exactly the same problem??

      I had this problem once. I have no idea if it is the same problem in your case, but here is what solved this problem for me. Directly above the Cassette 2 (on the front of the printer) is the Cassette that is marked "1". In my case, if this cassette is even SLIGHTLY pushed in too far, it will prevent paper feeding from any of the other cassettes. It is extremely easy to bump it in a millimeter or two when loading paper in cassette 2. The first time this happened to me was when I first got the printer. It appears that the cassette 1 was pushed all the way back as far as it would go. I couldn't even see that it existed. I just happened to notice it. I'd say double check that the cassette 1 tray is aligned perfectly.

      As described in one of the above comments, the gears are indeed sometimes mis-aligned at the time of trying this fix. Personally, I wiggle the loose gear back and forth a little (not enough to let it fall off the rod!) until the gears align. Once they align, they slide together very easily.

      Could be a lot of other problems then. I have addressed some other possible issues in other comments here that may be worth looking into.

      Possibly something jammed in the mechanism. The top feed for paper is pretty susceptible to small objects dropping in. I’ve found a few other meaning for this error:
      MEANING="CR PID speed fall error"
      DESCRIPTION="- Main Board failure (Firmware failure)
      - Cartridge overload due to paper jam"
      The most common of course being the paper jam.
      If it were me, I’d try a firmware update and see if it fixes the issue. If not, and there absolutely are no jams, it sounds like a bigger issue.

      I repair it a few hours ago after disassemble the device 6 times...
      The first time I found a torn paper that was 2x2cm from last year (I recognize the document).
      Then a scan error appeared, I disassemble again and failed but that allows me to understand how to disassemble the upper part of the device entirely.
      My problem was that my paper can't slide so the last time, I disassemble the whole thing and I really check all the little hole where the paper should slide and I found my bunny's pellet (3mm) in the middle hole...
      I took it with a barbecue stick with a double sided adhesive paper at the end.
      I used "Kevin at bch" channel with the video named "100016 scanner error" (there are 2 videos I watched both of them).
      If you don't have warranty like me anymore, I truly recommend to try this.
      And make a camera record while you disassemble so that you know the place of every piece.
      I recommend to be with someone to help because I couldn't do it on my own.
      I hope this will help !
