Got kind of an odd question
What is the preferred (or recommended) file type that can be auctioned at NFT markets, for animations
.gif .mp4 .webm with or without audio, or does it matter at all?

Most sites will allow different types of images, video and audio such as JPG PNG MP4 and also audio formats as well! You can either use sound or no sound, but the biggest factor is the size of the file itself. If you are uploading video, you will want to keep the file size somewhere between 50-100mb max size. I typically use MP4
