Freddie was becoming very ill from Aids and had to cover his face to hide the lesions on his face. He kept that marvelous, powerful voice until he was very ill. What a brave and talented man he was. ❤

The beard was to cover the Kaposi's Sarcoma marks on his face which are a consequence of having AIDS. He was entering the start of the later stages of the disease at the time of recording (1988) it was released in 1989.

@@SeanStaxxMusic The whole suit, tie & loose trouser were to help cover up lesions Freddie had. I think it just proves what a total Warrior he is! (present context use as Legends NEVER die)

“I Want It All” Queen was released by Queen in 1989 and was featured in their 13th studio album The Miracle.
Freddie was very ill by the time they filmed this video. It was surprising that he demonstrated the amount of energy he did for this video since he was already having difficulty standing and walking. He grew the beard to hide the effects of the Kaposi's sarcoma. Freddie was never able to perform this song live.
The song was first played live on April 20th, 1992, three years after its release, during The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, performed by the three remaining members of Queen, with Roger Daltrey singing lead vocals. Freddie himself never performed the song live, as he died in November 1991 from AIDS at the age of 45.
The song, according to bassist John Deacon, was one of only a few which was already written before the band entered the studio at the beginning of 1988 for what would become The Miracle album. The title stems from a catchphrase of actress Anita Dobson (Brian May’s second wife): “I want it all and I want it now!”. The song is notably heavy and features themes relating to rebellion and social upheaval. Songwriter May, however, claims that it is about having ambitions and fighting for one’s own goals; because of this, the song became an anti-apartheid song in South Africa and has also been used as a gay rights protest theme and a rallying anthem for African-American youth.
The opening theme was used in an Old Navy commercial.
Queen was known for constantly changing their style. They never stuck to one style. They recorded soft rock, hard rock, thrash rock, progressive rock, rock 'n roll, r & b, rockabilly, jazz, soul, blues, folk, ballads, area rock, and more. You obviously have not ventured very far into the catalog.
Queen songs vary from "Killer Queen" to "Dragon Attack" to "Hammer To Fall", to "Save Me "to "Liar" to "Under Pressure", to "Somebody To Love" to "The March of the Black Queen" to "Another One Bites The Dust", to "Radio Ga Ga" to "39" to "My Melancholy Blues" to "White Queen" to "Don't Stop Me Now" to "Cool Cats" to "Tie Your Mother Down" to "Love Of My Life" and on and on...

It's amazing that Freddie Mercury was able to do this song and video with how ill he was from AIDS. He was dying and still put on one hell of a show. It's one of Queen's best later songs. You should check out "Headlong" too it was also a later video from Queen but Freddie and the band killed it. Also, "The Invisible Man" was a far different sound.

Freddie was very sick by this time and he had cancerous spots on his face that he covered with a beard. He was also getting thin so he wore a few layers of clothing to hide that fact. His face is a bit bloated from the meds he was having to take, as well. But!!! He wanted to sing and keep on going until the end, so here he is smashing this song like nobody but Freddie could. Thank you for your reaction.

Freddie was struggling health-wise at this point in his life. His vocals and performance remained strong to the end but his vocals became thinner in texture, much like in the early Queen years, because he was forced to quit smoking to attempt to extend his life due to the effect of AIDS-related disease on his lungs. He was in a lot of pain. He was losing weight rapidly and his skin was very sensitive, thus the loose fitting clothes but he gave his all every single time.

This was written by Brian May (guitar). After one of the Wembley '86 shows his now wife (who is a popular actress in Britain) said something to the effect "I Want This. I WANT IT ALL!". The phrase caught Brian's attention so he wrote a song around it.
Queen's last tour was '86, but they did release 3 more albums. Freddie said after the last show of the '86 tour that he didn't want to go on the road anymore. While he wasn't "officially" diagnosed with HIV/AIDS until '87 he probably had an inkling that he was sick.

Freddie was already sick at this time... so, he never got to sing this song live. Imagine the things he could do with this song if he could sing it live. anyway, could you react to some early Queen songs... The march of the black Queen, In the lap of the gods/ in the lap of the gods revisited, my melancholy blues, the prophet song, the fairy feller's masterstroke etc.

It’s in a ton of commercials.. it was recorded in 1988, somewhat late in Freddie’s illness; the beard was because he was beginning to see lesions on his face caused by his advancing HIV/AIDS. Many of the songs on this ‘Miracle’ album are really, really good.. videos are great. Please consider reacting to others!

You need to hear the early Queen 1970s very progressive, metal before there was metal, hard rock. Listen to Stone Cold Crazy live at the Rainbow, Metallica covered that song.

  • @EmeraldWings90

This is from 1989 (The Miracle album) - Freddie looks different because he's already ill here (he was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987 and died at the end of 1991 (it always upsets me to think about what a slow and cruel illness it is...)) - the beard's hiding some marks on his face. :( Freddie's voice is much raspier on this song than on others, that's on purpose, a stylistic choice. The album probably has more synthesizers in it than you might have heard from Queen, by this time synthesizers have evolved and sounded better so they have started using them earlier in the 80s. Brian wrote the song, he was going through a painful divorce, his new love Anita said "I want it all", it's an encouragement to get what you want. (Scandal from the same album is about the same divorce, but also applies to the awful invasiveness of the media in general, e.g. with regards to Freddie's health.)

At the old age of 73 I've become an avid Queen/Freddie Mercury fan. This particular song isn't one of my favorites though. I think its that statement "I Want it All" - a very egocentric statement that I find a bit offensive. That said, I appreciate the band giving such a great performance, knowing they were all going through a rough time just doing everything they could to continue making the music they loved and being so supportive of Freddie who was obviously suffering through a terrible disease. I really hope you will continue your journey with Queen's music. Over nearly 20 years they put out a lot of fabulous music. You've barely scratched the surface so far. "Now I'm Here" is one of my favorites (loved your review of that one). I like almost all that they did. But I am partial to "Don't Stop Me Now" (the studio version), "Dragon Attack" (live at Montreal in 81),. I'm also probably one of the few who likes a fes songs from their not so popular "Disco" album - "Cool Cat" and "Action this Day" are really good, I think. Guess I could go on and on, but I think everyone should see the song that gave them their first big break in the music business, performed on Top of the Pops (early 1970's - "Killer Queen".
