Your eyes wide open since the 60's. Man, it must be heartbreaking. To see the toil in ignorance and suffering, to see us all work alienated in vain. Knowing the answer and seeing the many ways we have grown to reject it. Peace be in your lives.
Thank you Erich for teaching me what love is. I will always appreciate coming across your excellent book. You saved my life for years of abuse in all sense. I love and admire your love for humanity.
definitely a book to re-read. here's a quick recap (up to half the book): love is an activity/ attitude. an act of will. its not only a feeling but it's a decision/ a judgement. a commitment to the growth and happiness of that which we love. a commitment to give instead of receiving. love isn't sexual desire or infatuation based on an object. it can inspire sexual desire however in erotic love. contrary to Freud self love isn't a narcissist pattern. its not selfishness. if you can love others but can't love yourself you can't love at all. a selfish person doesn't necessarily loves himself too much. he cares too Little for his real self. someone that's selfish can't love others but can't love themselves either.

Excellent Philosopher. Hanah Arendt and Fromm 2 of my favorites! Both Concentrate on the adjustment of man within the parameters of societal faults. The irresponsibility created by authoritarian manufactured sense of fear. It is clear to this human that without the action of concentration when not involved in the illogical laborious act of creating wealth for the hierarchical automatons who have no interest in brotherly love nor the development of love for themselves we may never overcome the impending doom historically reaped by such societies. Should one consider that as we demonize another society as evil it is the evil within us we see projected? Should it be considered that the simple act of loving ones self would project love? Is it all as simple as loving ones self through the act of concentration on the daily acts we commit? I say yes indeed it is our blind adherence to "norms that achieved a society rather devoid of introspection, concentration, and acknowledgement, of our connection with our brothers and sisters as at their core just the same in many more ways then not. Can we love ourselves enough to admit when we have caused more harm then good? Can we act to insure those harms are not committed again? Can we do what is necessary to love ourselves enough to put down that gun and refuse orders ? Can we love ourselves enough to do what is necessary to protect, free, encourage, and accept our brothers and sisters?
Is this version abridged in any way? It seems other recorded versions are approximately 4 hours long.. I know prefaces are not included, is there anything else missing?
I think this one is abridged. I've got the 1956 version from the library, and the audio sometimes skips some sentences. It doesn't affect the overall quality though.
Yes, I've read the book and there are parts that I remember that aren't included in the audio, like e.g. the difference between Eastern philosophy and Western philosophy.

First read this in the late 1960s. It stands the test of time. We are living in an age in which we need to reread and consider Fromm's teachings

A book pivotal to my emotional maturity. Fromm elevates the meaning of love to the activity of loving.
All has à begging and the end still unconditional love is à listing love. I am deeply honored to expérience one in my life..
2:22 „To love is simple. But [...] to find the right object to love, or to be loved by, is difficult.“
6:21 „nothing is easier than to love“

So Fromm doesn't accept the full humanity of gay people?
@@ginaharrison5560 He had the ability to think rationally and not follow common sense if it was irrational.
