Octane number has actually nothing to do with the overall quality of the fuel. Lower octane fuel does not mean the fuel is of lower quality. Modern fuel has additives and refineries have quality standards by law (depending on your location) mostly focused on keeping engines run as efficient as possible with regards to air pollution. Higher octane gasoline is just fuel that has other chemical characteristics and a higher pre-ignition threshold. (Depending on the physical circumstances of the fuel. Fuel temperature, pressure inside the cilinder, atomization, etc.) Modern car engines that require high octane fuel, are engines that usually run slightly lean, hotter and with higher compression ratios. If you put lower octane fuel than advised in a modern engine you will lose some horsepower because the engine management will adjust parameters to burn the fuel as efficient as possible, and you are increasing the chance of getting engine knock or pre-ignition since the threshold in lower octane fuel is lower. Burn time is constant and so if the rpm is higher you have to start burning sooner.

Sorry for asking noob question, can we tune ignition timing on dyno and used oscilloscope to monitor TDC and spark?
