EXPOSURE BLENDING FOR REAL ESTATE AND ARCHITECTURE PHOTOGRAPHY - A "MUST HAVE" SKILL!

  • Can't be bothered with exposure blending? Take the fast approach with Aurora HDR here: bit.ly/best_HDR (use ATSKY10 for a discount). Get Luminar AI for finishing your shots to the next level, here: bit.ly/Lum-AI with discount code ATSKY10
    To make your luminosity masking even quicker, check out this exposure blending panel bit.ly/3dpGeub. There's an option to get it with the tutorial videos which I did, and I have to say, they are very well put together and a really fantastic resource for learning exposure blending techniques.
    In this architecture interior / real estate video tutorial, I show one of THE MOST POWERFUL techniques you NEED to know if you want to be successful as an architectural photographer and that is exposure blending.
    This video is thorough with the aim of helping you understand the process but also why we take the steps we do.
    We'll look at preparing the files in Lightroom and then loading them as layers in photoshop. Then we'll use the "Apply Image" command on the masks to create a refined and highly detailed mask based on the brightness (luminosity) of the photos. From here, I'll show you how I use a technique called double masking to bring back the effect only where I want it, but now I can paint it in much more roughly and quickly.
    The actual process only takes a couple of minutes, but the demo is longer to allow for a complete explanation. If you're interested in becoming an architectural photographer or upping your real estate photography, then learning luminosity masking and exposure blending is a must!

    Made Sense. Great tutorial Anthony. i've always been a flambient shooter for real estate, but these days, i'm going to get more into HDR. i like the idea of not carrying flashes and light stands.. Just a tripod, throwing the camera in AEB, 5 brackets, 2 stops apart. 2 sec timer, and getting out of there. I'm fairly new to editing HDR. I've created HDR in Photoshop and in lightroom and also using HDR in Aurora but i like to be in better control rather than taking my chances with the software, and this video helps tremendously.

    • @AnthonyTurnham

    • @NathanSpotts

      @@291samuel It sounds like you may be referring to the night time bathroom shot that Anthony opened the video with. Indeed there are reflections in the window on that one, and yes, he could have shot an exposure with the interior lights off to show just the night time view out of that window, and then used that as a blend layer. I think Anthony might have thought you were referring to the daytime kitchen shot that he was using to demonstrate the blending technique for the video. Cheers 😄

    Very informative and clear video, I'm fairly familiar with luminosity masks now but watching your process was super usseful thanks The only question I have left, is whether or not you ever use the levels control on your luminosity mask to tweak them further during your edit process, eg. to narrow the range of the selection. Thanks!

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  3 года назад +1

      Hi. Great question. Yes. Absolutely I'll often refine my mask. I usually do this either by tweaking the curves (but levels would achieve the same thing, I just prefer using curves), or I'll run the Apply Image command a second or even third time to get more contrast in the mask.

  • @AmericanPatriot447

    I am probably wrong when I say this but doesn’t all this take too long to make it still profitable? Perhaps you get so good at it that you can do all this much quicker I don’t know….but you did do a really good job of editing.

    My Lightroom (classic) won't 'open as layers' in Photoshop. I've tried looking for the answers here on RUclips.. haven't found anything clear and simple as to why it's happening. • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  3 года назад

      What version of LR are you using? I prefer opening as smart objects anyway so the raw data is still accessible if needed. As yet LR doesn't allow to open smart objects in a stack. Bit of a pain and not sure why not...

I always weigh up plugins as a business cost and how much time they'll save me so from that point of view, Lumenzia is a no-brainer.

    Thank you for this, I am good with lightroom, Just added PS. I have 1 question that is stopping me from using it as the photos are to be sent for MLS. When you start a new file on photo shop it asks you what size. It has a bunch of pre programed ones. I am shooting in 4k and 3.2. I do not know which one to pic? If I choose the wrong size, won't that ruin the MLS listing? Or change the photo. May sound dumb but I am really new to PS and I can not find an answer for this. Great vids, learned a lot from you

    Great video and very helpful, I’m shooting a dining room with large plate glass windows looking out on a pool. Very bright highlights on one side and shadows as you move further inside. I have to ask, on your image here, the table seems to have legs that lean to the left, is that optical or is it a strange table because everything else is parallel.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  3 года назад

      Good spotting! It's just the table design. I always find that strangely unsatisfying when a quirky angle of something makes it seem as if your photo isn't plumb. I think the table is kinda trapezoidal from the side.

    • @aes53
      @aes53 3 года назад

      That’s what I figured, everything else was way to scrupulously squared off. Cool table, but I bet it could really freak you out if you had been drinking 😉

    At 24:59, you made a selection and then hovered over your layer mask with your mouse. What did you press to make sure your blacks were protected? It went kind of fast lol

      Just change the setting on the import dialogue box. Change "Apply During Import" to "none".

    A little bit, I'm taking photo classes at the local JC and one was an advanced editing class of which the first half of the semester was good but the second half was more photoshop and of course more intense. I had to drop it because if I didn't then the instructor would be doing my work and I did not want that. Hopefully viewing RUclips videos like this will make more understandable.

    Thanks! Great explanation of this method! A couple quick questions? 1) I can't find this video on your other channel, did you move it there? 2) Have you used/heard of Raya Pro? I know you use Lumenzia, but I purchased Raya Pro 3-4 years ago but never really got around to using it. I will probably purchase Lumenzia too but just curious. Thanks again!

      Hi and THANK YOU. I really appreciate your support! Yes, I've used raya pro (Jimmy McIntyre's panel if I remember correctly) but I prefer Lumenzia. You may be right, this one might not have been re-uploaded on my other channel. I should probably do that! Thanks for the nudge!

    This is tutorial is awesome and really helpful! Love it! What if the room is dim and don't get enough ambient light, will this method be sufficient or will I need to use an umbrella?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  3 года назад

      Just set your base exposure so the dim room is bright enough and then use this technique. Once you master it you can merge very difficult, high contrast scenes quite easily.

      If speed of delivery is the issue, you know you can double the playback speed, right? I find myself doing that a lot on videos where I just want to consume the information more quickly.

    You explained extremely well the double masking technique. 2 Questions: 1. If I use a luminosity mask created in the channels, is it the same as to apply image technique? 2. Do you have a tutorial as this one where you explain how to handle color cast, i.e., if we have lights on and they are yellowish? Thank you very much.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Год назад

      Hi. Good questions. While channels can be leveraged to create similar masks, it's not the same as apply image because we can utilise blend modes to create more contrast etc. The best option for control and finetuning your mask quickly but accurately is the Lumenzia panel bit.ly/3dpGeub With regards to further architectural editing techniques (colour casts etc) I's recommend my dedicated channel: bit.ly/ATArchitecture

    Great technique! I've been using Photoshop for over 20 years but I'm new to real estate photography and combining multiple exposures. I have watched a ton of similar videos in the last couple weeks, yours is the first I've seen use groups to double-mask a layer like this, and also the first I've seen use alt/option click on the mask to see the mask. Everyone else kind of treats the mask as some mysterious thing you can't see or interact with directly. One suggestion: Levels adjustment on the detail masks that you extracted from the image can be tremendous to dial in the intensity of the mask. For instance if there are shades of grey around the highlight areas of the mask but you really only want the strongest part of the highlight, you can adjust levels to crush the grey midtones into a harsher black+white.

    Do you have any videos on how you set up your camera (exposure, shutter speed, iso etc)? Everytime I try to do these hdr photos, it seems like Lightroom won't merge the photos together properly. Or would you recommend I do it manually in photoshop? Thanks!!

      I've got it. Its very good and kudos to Jimmy for what he's created but I like controlling my masks myself with curves. I just didn't go into that in this video as that's another level of complexity again. Just wanted to help explain the concept in this one.
