A rousing success at its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, this deeply felt human drama is the feature debut of writer/director Dee Rees. Adepero Oduye portrays Alike (pronounced "ah-lee-kay"), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister (Sahra Mellesse) in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. A gifted student, Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the support of her best friend Laura (Pernell Walker), she is especially eager to find a girlfriend. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity.
omg. I always know I have to see it when even the trailer makes me want to cry. "Your daughter's turning into a damn man right in front of your eyes" Ugh, that breaks my heart.
No, she is just a lesbian. The thing is that she is the "AG" or "Butch" type.
This is a fresh look at an old theme. Whether it be dangerous sexual experimentation, alcoholism, drug addiction, or sex addiction, this shows the interrelationship with the family and includes all the classic dysfunction. While at the core it is about discovering sexual identity, the supporting staff of family members really steals this show from the main character. But, the main character does emerge as awakened to her own strength, and completes the stage with a more well-rounded story.
This movie was so touchin. Very great gem of a film!. Every family with a unique child should see it. Or anyone who loves a movie with a msg. U feel for them and it's like u being a fly on the wall to the daily life. It's deep. A++
this looks amazing! as an LGBT youth of color myself, It's hard to find things about us. I can't say I relate exaxtly to her, but I feel her story.
sidenote: what song is that in the trailer?
omg this looks beautifully amazing. None of the lesbian movies that i've seen have had a black girl as the main character. it's nice to see someone that looks like me, sort of=/
yeah, there needs to be more lgbt people of all races, ages, & genders in the movies. Its NOT just white people, its all races (and ages & genders).
I agree! I can't wait till the day that we are able to go to the movies and watch movies like this, not just like Nicholas Spark type of movies.

I am not a girl, but I can relate to this movie so much! This is a must see movie if anyone wants to learn about intersectionalities.
This is the best thing I've ever seen. I'm so glad this topic is surfacing on to film. I cannot wait to see this movie.
I had "the talk" about me recently with my parents and I found this on YouthLine.ca after reading their blog.
