After 11 years of playing the flute, struggling to sound nice playing high, this actually changed the game!!! The first time trying it, my sound was like night and day. Thank you!!!
Wow that's so awesome to hear Char! 😀 So glad my high notes tip has helped you! 😊 If you want to learn more proper techniques on the flute, feel free to join me in The Flute Academy. Here's the information page in case you're interested. www.flute.school/academy
That different was night and day for me! I’ve been doing a weird combo of 1/2 but none of the people I have taken lessons with have ever mentioned the 3rd method and I feel that has really hindered some of my doubling on flute. Thank you so much!!
THANK YOU!!!! This helped me out so much, I always either ran out of air or felt like I really had to squeeze my lips. This really helped, I have been struggling with flute lately because I have been playing much higher than in previous years of flute playing, and so this really helped with things like the high g and up
Beginner here, no teachers around, so i rely mostly on YT lessons. Browsing through various flute channels, i'd say Jane's channel is the clearest and easiest to understand. I love how she demonstrates the technical explanation for why and how this and that sounds like. Subbed.
Hi, this worked first time out. I've only been playing for about three months and already saw an improvement in hitting my highs. It really inspires confidence.THANK YOU SO MUCH.
This helped me so much thank you! I’ve always struggled with playing high notes and I was stuck to blowing hard, but now I can finally play high notes so much clearer! ❤❤❤ this will take some practice to get accustomed to but I’m glad I came across this video
Thank you for your channel! I loved playing the flute and piccolo when I was younger and hadn’t picked it up in a long time. I tried hitting those high notes which was nearly impossible after 10 years of not playing. But after this tutorial I think I’m hitting high notes better today after 5 mins of practicing this method than I was when I was playing daily!
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your videos! I am a trumpet player who was asked to teach a music class in school. I knew NOTHING about playing flute! Your videos have been very helpful and informative. Thank you!
You are fantastic. I taught concert band for a long time, but, despite being a sax/clarinet player, I had a really hard time playing flute and helping my flute players. I have just started a job where I will be starting beginners and I wanted to be sure to do it correctly. Between this video and your two beginner embouchure videos, my tone and confidence has improved a ton in less than a half hour. THANKS!
Wow that's awesome Andrew! You would definitely suit my courses inside The Flute Academy. I have many flute teachers that join to learn how to teach the flute correctly to their own students. Here's the link in case you're interested. www.flute.school/academy
This video is 8 years old but it saved me, my god... I had been trying to play high notes on the dizi for WEEKS now and I was finally able to do it! Thank you so much!!!
This video helped me sooooo much!!! Thank you!! I was trying to squeeze and "muscle"' the high notes out but after watching this I realized that all I had to do was move my embouchure forward and relax but focus the air stream and voila!! The notes came out with ease!
I found this searching for how to play high C and above, as I was struggling. Immediately my high notes improved and I hit high C easily! I’m sure I was told this in one of my high-end flute lessons years ago, but now I really get it! Thank you so much!!
YOU are such an AWESOME teacher! I wish I'd had a mentor like you when I was playing in my teenage years. I think I could have made a profession of it. Recently, I've picked it up again, my core self. It's been many years, but much is coming back quickly. Tips like this though are treasures I wished I'd had then Super stoked to have them now. THANK YOU JANE!
Thank you for demonstrating the different ways of producing high notes. I am a self taught horn player, and years later I am still finding and trying to correct poor habits. Now that I am trying to learn the flute, I am happy that there are videos like this that may help me from developing some poor methods. I was certainly in the first camp of overblowing to reach high notes, but with your help I am adjusting to the correct way.
As a sax player trying to learn how to double I was wondering why I couldn't reliably get above a E or so (the first overtone) and this helped SO MUCH! Thank you! Even just the first second I played it and it sounded great and was an instant fix!
I took up flute in my older years. While I have a great flute teacher, it is lovely to source help without driving her nuts with my texts. Jane you have a lovely way about you. I look forward to watching many more of your tips.
That's awesome you started playing flute later in life! Glad to hear my tips have been helpful! 😊 If you're interested in learning more from me, you're welcome to join me in The Flute Academy! www.flute.school/academy
I found the Ooh example helped me a lot! Also you can also try to put a shocked expression on your face as you play, Because when doing your embochure whilst being shocked your lips go forward!
I've been having so much trouble with lightheadedness when I try to hold those high notes (I was using more air to reach higher pitches). This video was super helpful, thank you so much! I only have one question: what would you recommend for reaching higher octaves? I'm having trouble playing notes like high f, both with this method and in general.
I only play the flute casually, and almost gave up when I first tried to quickly switch between octaves. Nothing helped. Your pouty/U method was magical. You saved my hobby. Thank you. You're a great teacher.
Jane, I be a high beginner, I.e. Started several years back, just stopped, procrastination, and forging full ahead on technique. Pushing lips forward is great idea, it is working. I Am now a Jane follower. I live in Austin, Texas, USA.
So glad my video helped you on your flute journey! 😊 If you're interested in learning about how to play high notes further, I have a whole module on high notes in one of my courses inside The Flute Academy. Here's the link in case you're interested. www.flute.school/academy
My primary is alto sax and I have to double on flute and I have been having SO much trouble with the upper register and it was finally solved because of you. Thank you so much
That's so awesome to hear Andy! 😊 If you'd like to learn more from me, you've very welcome to join The Flute Academy. Here's the link in case you're interested. www.flute.school/academy I hope your alto sax and flute playing goes well! 😀
Been playing the flute on and off for 17 years (mostly using the 2nd method) and I cant believe how much this one little tip has improved the sound of my high notes! THANK YOU!
Thank you for the tips. As a woodwind doubler and maybe because of it ,I often end up doing the 2nd way of playing. I have been playing the 3rd way at times when I only am playing flute. The video helps me to check which way I am playing when the sound is not where I like it to be.
Jane Thank you! I have a jaw injury and to get to those high notes squeezing the mouth includes the jaw and it keeps me from trying. I just gave your technic a try and it works! I feel a tightening after playing of the lower lip corners but that is probably what gets strengthened. Thank you
Thank you! I couldn't even get it to shift octave the second way. Re the third way, my teacher told me to move my jaw forward but this has helped me grasp it. I still sound a mess but it's something to work off at least now, thanks :)
That's awesome to hear my video has helped you with your high notes! Here's the link to my free mini course on tone to help you further with your embouchure. www.flute.school/free 😀
I combine the last way with larynx (throat) control. By allowing your larynx move as if you are singing you can play your harmonics off each note with much greater accuracy. This allows you to play with much greater confidence as your flute will play the note you desire instead of a harmonic an octave up
I really needed this. Im a freshman and i am a really good flute palyer but my high notes didnt sound as clear as i wanted them and this helped me a lot. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much! I have a dizi flute and yout explanation helped me to improve my high notes in 5 minutes, i can't believe it haha again, thank you, you're amazing
Sounds better than normal (accent and flute playing). Thank you so much! I found this video very helpful. I am a saxophone player who doubles on flute and I was always able to get the high notes to pop out from the second month of playing the flute onward but I always felt I was working too hard. Hopefully this adjustment will make it easier.
Hi Jane Nikki here, Sydneysider now living in Scotland!!! Thanks so much for this insight. I’ve been tying to play high notes, like my teacher says, particularly with the squeezing abdomen and tightening embouchure and nothing has made the notes sound less airy and it’s starting to annoy me!!!!!. I’ve tried moving Embouchure forward, like you suggest, just now and finally got some silky high notes!!!! Sounds so lovely! Thanks so much.....now lots of practice.......
Yay for worldwide Sydney-siders! And great to hear about your high notes. I've got 2 tips for you: Make sure you have a really small hole in your mouth. This will help your high notes too. Also, make sure you don't ooooo/pout too much, just a little teensy bit is perfect!
Thank you so so much for your help. I only started playing flute 3 days now and because of your video, I am already able to hit 3 octaves. Much appreciated. You are an amazing teacher. Keep doing what you do!😊😊😊
Hi Jane, I just subscribed to your mini course on how to play higher notes and you won't believe that, right after watching the first video I was able to produce higher notes, thanks a lot for such a nice tutorial. It would be great if you can show these techniques on a bamboo flute as well
That's fantastic to hear Asad! Good work :) I don't play bamboo flute, but the embouchure for all flutes is very similar, so I suspect it will be the same to get higher notes on the bamboo flute.
Awesome. Luckily I am only 1 week into learning the high notes without years of wrong trying lol I've tried all the advice out there including my teacher's, amongst others, squeezing mouth, pressing both lips down with strong airspeed, super strong airspeed only, upper lip forward only, bottom lip forward only lol 😂😂😂 this is awesome tutorial Jane! Thank you! I am playing the Vietnamese bamboo flute and things around the embouchure r similar 🤗
I could cry!!! You're pro tip was so amazing! It's been years since I've played and I needed this help to get my lip back. Thank you for posting this! It helps so much!
A great video and extremely helpful as I really wanted to be able to master the high octave. I play Tenor sax and swiching to flute for the next song is challenging . I am 70 .😊
That's awesome to hear you enjoyed my video and that you play tenor sax too! I have a course for doublers inside The Flute Academy. Here's the link in case you're interested. www.flute.school/academy 😀
I started playing the flute yesterday, and I wanted to learn a d major scale. I was wanting to do a 2octave scale, but I COULD NOT get the higher notes. This helped a lot, thanks so much. Now I can play an decent d major scale :D (I'm a violin player, and I wanted to try out a wind instrument C: )
Nice video, as a physiologist I feel obligated to make one correction. You do not get dizzy because of getting too much oxygen to the brain, but because of being deprived of oxygen. Exhaling more (losing air as you put it) increases the amount of CO2 expelled from the blood via the lungs, so blood CO2 decreases, which makes O2 bind stronger to haemoglobin. It effectively means that O2 gets stuck in the blood - it won't release into the tissues as easily, so the cells have less oxygen as oxygen accumulates in the blood - where one does not technically need it. One way to complement preventing that is to focus on slow and especially nasal breathing whenever possible. Many flutists will prefer mouth breathing for various reasons, however, whenever you have the time, it is advisable to thrown in nasal inhales to prevent dizziness and contribute to relaxation in the cardiovascular system, which will benefit overall tone quality. Nasal breathing is slower, so one accumulates more CO2 (widens blood vessels, allows O2 offload from the blood) and it induces nitric oxide, which also widens blood vessels.
Thank you so much Hannes! I'm glad you have corrected me. I will never say "because you're brain is getting too much oxygen" again! I appreciate your explanation. Jane
Thanks for this and the other videos on embouchure. I am a saxophonist doubling on flute and they helped me realise I was not focusing the air enough, I was trying to play so relaxed that the air was getting too diffuse and I couldn't aim it at all. Would be interested to hear the other exercises you have for developing that way of playing. It's quite analogous to saxophone in that you have different ways of (somewhat) achieving similar ends but one is basically superior. With saxophone it would be biting the reed vs. using your throat and tongue position to change air speed. I guess with the flute everything is just moved down so it becomes moving lips forward to change air speed vs 'biting' the lips. Cheers
Hey Eddd (cool name!), I'm glad you sound like you're getting better at focus the airstream. It definitely is step 1 is getting a better (less diffuse) sound! Jane
I came to see how I can improve my high notes and I discovered that I play the way you are actually supposed to play, which was good because that means that I am in the good way and I justa have to keep practicing.
This was so helpful. Sometimes I find myself struggling with hitting a clean high C and I’m thinking I might be doing the number 2 version. I’m going to practice this later. Thank you so much!
This was so helpful!! I was self-taught in high school band/orchestra and then look lessons at the university as a non-major. Yet, I still have many bad habits to fix. Trying to continue improving and playing as I start medical school. :)
I really needed this for my marching band or they'll kick me out because I have only 1 year of experience and others have 3-4 so I'm behind and I am not good at playing high notes.
Today is my first day playing in like eight years. I've picked it up better than I figured I would but I've noticed that when I go from a high A to a high E, my lips buzz. Tried the lips forward thing that you mentioned and it got worse, if I was able to do it at all. But it's my first day back so I'm sure I'll figure it out at some point. Starting off with Fantasia for flute solo "Flamenco" by Herman Beeftink.
That's so awesome you've recently come back to your flute playing! 😀If you're interested in revisiting and learning some of the proper flute techniques, you're very welcome to join me in The Flute Academy. Here's the link if you're interested. www.flute.school/academy It is worth mentioning that many of the members inside The Flute Academy have a similar story to yours, they played when they were younger, had many years off and have now returned to playing their flute. 😊
Hello! I have a tip for teaching how to play high notes. I recommend that you should add that instead of blowing harder, students should make a smaller hole, which automatically brings your lips forward. It was hard for me to understand when you said we should bring our lips forward, so my teacher taught me to make a smaller hole in my lips, which makes the air faster. Thank you so much for what you do!
My 12 year old daughter (first year on flute) was showing me her piece and I could tell she wasn't hitting those high notes. I showed her your video and she had it in 2 min!!! Awesome!
Hi Jane thanks so much for this vid. I am a composer and pro recorder player taking up indian Bansuri and you instruction on this topic has really helped me. O don’t like keys and buttons but I might even have a poop on a Böhm just to see.Thank You Also your presentation is BRILLIANT.Eqsy going and spontaneous. Ŵ
Hi Ada, yes there is! But it's not a quick fix I'm afraid. It does help long term though! Get really good at the technique in this video for "not-so-high" high notes (like E3 up to A3) and you'll gradually (and automatically) get better at the higher high notes too. Jane
Hi there, I have heaps of lessons on articulation inside The Flute Academy. Here's the link to join in case you're interested. 😀www.flute.school/academy
OH MY GOD, WHY DID NOBODY SAY TO DO THIS SOONER!! Im so happy right now, I can finally play high notes, it was this simple.

What a technique! I'll definitely try this. Pouting one.
Let me know how you go with this embouchure technique! 😀
Thank you! I couldn't even get it to shift octave the second way. Re the third way, my teacher told me to move my jaw forward but this has helped me grasp it. I still sound a mess but it's something to work off at least now, thanks :)

I combine the last way with larynx (throat) control. By allowing your larynx move as if you are singing you can play your harmonics off each note with much greater accuracy. This allows you to play with much greater confidence as your flute will play the note you desire instead of a harmonic an octave up
That's great that method works for you! 😀
Wow.. I am self taught on flute, so I was doing it the "kiddy" way.. Tried your method and WOW, night and day. Thank you so so much.

Fantastic to hear Ripz! Glad you like my accent too ;)
I’m tryna play Jingle Bell for my school’s Christmas Music Festival and I was havin trouble with the high notes TYSM!
Good luck for your concert at your school! 😀
As a student just now learning to play and having trouble with higher notes I can say that I never thought it would be this easy
If you have the right instruction, it can be very clear to learn the flute. 😊

Wow! 3 octaves in 3 days. That's amazing! Well done.
It took me 4 years to do a 3 octave chromatic scale.

Thank you! I am playing the Vietnamese bamboo flute and things around the embouchure r similar 🤗
Thank you so much!!!!Now i can finally play high notes!!!
Yay! So glad to hear! 😊
I could cry!!! You're pro tip was so amazing! It's been years since I've played and I needed this help to get my lip back. Thank you for posting this! It helps so much!
Oh that's great to hear Christina! I'm so glad it helped you, and well done for getting back into flute playing!
I love your comment Excited Pizza! I'm so glad it worked for you.
PS I love pizza.
Thank you Jane. Excellent advice.
Thank you Leena! 😊
Jane
Lol ok 😂
Cheers
Hey Eddd (cool name!),
I'm glad you sound like you're getting better at focus the airstream. It definitely is step 1 is getting a better (less diffuse) sound!
Jane
THIS VIDEO IS A MIRACLE
Oooo wow! A miracle! That is possibly the highest compliment one of my videos have ever received!! Thank you :)
Thank a lot. I´ve seen other people talking about it but you explained it so well!
Oh great to hear Bruno!
Thank you Jane!
You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
Thank you! I am learning how to play the Piccolo, and your tips really helped.
Oh that's good to hear Aisha!
I also found that another tip wad to instead of pushing the whole lips forward, only push the upper lip forward!
Definitely experiment with my method too and see what works best for your tone. 😀
I came to see how I can improve my high notes and I discovered that I play the way you are actually supposed to play, which was good because that means that I am in the good way and I justa have to keep practicing.
That's awesome Gael you're already using the proper technique for high notes! Woohoo! Keep up the good practise! 😀
I find this video very helpful as a middle school flute player
Glad it was helpful! 😊
OH MY GOD so helpful! Thank you so much!
So glad I could help! 😊
This was so helpful. Sometimes I find myself struggling with hitting a clean high C and I’m thinking I might be doing the number 2 version. I’m going to practice this later. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome! 😊
This was so helpful!! I was self-taught in high school band/orchestra and then look lessons at the university as a non-major. Yet, I still have many bad habits to fix. Trying to continue improving and playing as I start medical school. :)
Great work Taylor. There seem to be so many doctors who are musicians too, so you might be able to start a doctors orchestra where you are one day!
I really needed this for my marching band or they'll kick me out because I have only 1 year of experience and others have 3-4 so I'm behind and I am not good at playing high notes.
Hi Guerrero - I just saw your comment! How are your high notes now? Hopefully you are still allowed in your marching band :) Jane
Thank you so much!
Thank you very much!!! This video was a turning point in my flute learning. I improve some much after watching it!
Oh that's excellent to hear aragorn! A turning point is a great thing :) Jane
So great to hear aragorn! Jane
Here's the link if you're interested. www.flute.school/academy
It is worth mentioning that many of the members inside The Flute Academy have a similar story to yours, they played when they were younger, had many years off and have now returned to playing their flute. 😊
Thank you for sharing! 😊
@@JaneFluteSchool no problem 😃
The way you teach us is so good I really love the videos you make❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much 😀 Kathleen - that's really nice of you to say! I hope your flute playing is going well and I'm glad you love the videos!

Thanks so much! 😊
Thank you so much for sharing!
You're so welcome! Glad you liked my video! 😊
Thank you so much, I've been playing for about an hour now and your video made me get it right away.
Gosh, that's fantastic. Just one hour!! Most people take much longer than that!
Excellent help Jane THANKS!
You're welcome dwork!
My 12 year old daughter (first year on flute) was showing me her piece and I could tell she wasn't hitting those high notes. I showed her your video and she had it in 2 min!!! Awesome!
Yay! That's lovely to hear it helped your daughter achieve her high notes on the flute better! 😊
wow this was so helpful!!! Thank you!!!
I love your comment Elizabeth. It sounds like the technique did something good for you! Jane
This video literally made my break through when I started and couldn’t figure out how to play high notes thank you so much

... and just like that, I've played my first high note after being vexed about it for a couple of months, thank you Jane!
Ha! That is GREAT! Thanks for the comment :)
Thank you Stephen for such a lovely comment! You're welcome for the video and I'm glad it has helped you with the bansuri. Jane
Is there any tips or tricks to play really high notes (like the D in a 3 octave D major scale)
Hi Ada, yes there is! But it's not a quick fix I'm afraid. It does help long term though! Get really good at the technique in this video for "not-so-high" high notes (like E3 up to A3) and you'll gradually (and automatically) get better at the higher high notes too. Jane
Aggg. Rahhh. Omg. Thank you. I lost speech just realizing it could be that easy.
Glad to hear I could help! 😀
Can u make a video on how to articulate properly pls?
Hi there,
