- It seems a bit odd to clip the fluffy warm coat of your horse in the winter time - but if they're doing any work at all then they will probably get too hot with it all on. Hot horses sweat buckets and then they can get a chill. And ours get hot because they all work - even through the winter. Riding, driving, jumping and logging are the most energetic things they do at this time of year - but soon it will be time for ploughing again too.. So this is how I clip our horses..

Henry is the most docile horse I've ever seen. He didn't even flinch!
I remember my friend clipping her horse the first time, the same way, and finding out he was patchy underneath!! She had a grey horse (very white) but underneath that fur, was pink and dark grey skin, that a piebald would be proud of :) Still remember our shock, lol
At the end of the day, who cares how it looks as long as the horse is comfortable. Well done, Sandra!

I did my horse a blanket clip in winter, though he was in full work and wore blanket. In the Spring he was always last to shed and my trainer always fussed about how his coat would look for the first show in April or early May.
He always came through with a fine coat in time

Horse hair was used as reinforcement for things like sealing chimney's and stink pipes as it is water resistant and has a high tensile strength for hair. They would mat the horsehair in the area they were sealing and add a black tar cement. It isn't done as much in modern times but from time to time when you are redoing a old house's roof you will find it.
I used to find it all the time in plaster too when I was a builder
i thought it was just used for stuffing furniture. i guess our ancestors really did have us beat for making the most of all resources. when i brush my horses i just let th tufts go flying so the wild birds can make nests.
Emily Pollifax They used horse hair in early 1900 bicycle saddles too. It helped as a cushion with the mechanical springs for a smooth ride.
Must have been a lot of naked horses in years gone by.

We had horses, many years ago. Constant care and attention required! Different breed, clipping was never required. rc

i really enjoy your videos! really do especially the farming and your husbands tinkering videos! a few ideas though.. as a dog groomer i can tell you that when you clip against the hair you are doubling the wear on your clippers and how close your cutting theyre hair. for a surgical clip they use a 20 blade i think? thats a very close clip almost no hair left no insulation there for the animal in winter. so with your 10 blade reversed your cutting henrys hair with a 20 blade right close to the skin.

I have a long haired dog, and I know dogs and horses are much different fur-wise, but if I use a wide toothed comb to lift the fur while blow drying, it goes much faster

Well I know that the hair from the tail are used for making bow for violins but from Henry's soft front hair I like the idea of making paint brushes for making your beautiful paintings ;-)

This reminds me of using the clippers on my two boys when they were small but they put up a lot more struggle then henry
My grand father used moose clippings as insulating material at the hunting cabin.
We used to clip one of my cobs a bit like this but we'd do his belly too so that it didn't get sweaty & knotted around his girth.
I think the hair would actually look really cool if you shaved the front legs too, although that seems like it might negatively affect Henry somehow (I don't know how horses work). I think we would all benefit from more slow-motion footage of Henry though!

We leave the hair in the small front yards. Birds fetch it for nesting.

This might seem like a silly question, but why only shave the front? Don't horses sweat all over?
You could shave more of them but we only need a bit shaved off because they don't normally get so hot. Horses start sweating on their chests, so that's where we start shaving

traditionally it was used in plaster to help hold it together
Do you have to rug him with that clip?
We rug them in the winter anyway, but not in the summer.

r w Really? I find nothing wrong with my comment. I am in Ontario Canada. WE don't clip ours. I don't clip my horse and the working horses here don't get clipped. This includes the Clydesdales and Percherons. I suggest you watch what you say.

GSDmom B No need to be rude in your initial comment. There is a purpose for clipping as explained about. I live in Scotland and my dressage horses are clipped in the winter to allow them to work comfortably. Of course there is also the bonus of being easier to keep clean and looking smart however the only real reason to do it is if your horses is struggling with its work load due to being excessively sweaty along with the preventing of chills.
