Yep, an absolute champion of the highest order in my mind. There are lower-level champions such as Anamoe, Octagonal, Lonhro, Saintly, Rough Habit, Let's Elope, Beau Zam, Bonecrusher and dare I say Dulcify given he is my 2nd fav. of all time, but Kingston Town is right up there with the best champions.
Yes, happy for Murphy to win Cup and Gurners Lane get the double but would've been better if The King won it as was carrying 60kg I believe been perfect end to his career as maybe they retire him if won.
Wow! I hadn't realised just how good Kingston Town was until this video. No wonder there's always been so much hype about him. I can only think of two 'Champions' in the last 20 years (Black Caviar and Winx). The good old days of Kingston Town, Strawberry Road, Sir Dapper, Emancipation, Red Anchor, Dulcify, Vo Rogue, Bonecrusher, Better Loosen Up, Super Impose, Naturalism, Veandercross, Let's Elope, Mahogany, Octagonal, Saintly, Might and Power, Sunline, Northerly, Lonhro & Makybe Diva are gone. Nowadays there are just too many horses going around so nothing really stands out I guess. Anything and everything bobs up occasionally.
A real champion he was. Bit before my time but watched tapes of KT many times as a young adult to realise how good he was. We got lucky with Black Caviar and Winx coming nearly back-to-back and they are "all-time greats" and possibly the greatest. In last 10 years could add in Nature Strip as a champion but that's about it so agree with you - Anamoe top class but not champion IMO. One that confuses me is Chautauqua (one of my favs) - low-level champion or top class? For the last 20 years, you left out So You Think, More Joyous and Atlantic Jewel as they were lower-level champions IMO like Red Anchor, Bonecrusher, Let's Elope, Lonhro, etc. Every decade has their top horses but for me, the 90's was the best decade from early to mid to late and you named a few of them. I will eventually make clips of all those mentioned horses in future for the one's haven't already uploaded. Northerly one of my favs and will upload his clip in couple days.
There certainly hasn’t been a horse like him since. He was a real machine! I saw all his wins in Sydney. You could put him anywhere in the run, leading, midfield or last. No horses since could do what he use to do.
@@racingflashbacks Yep, he was a machine. Not many can do what he could do. I'm sure some of those wins the atmosphere at the track must have been fantastic. Winx is another rare champion, like K.Town, that could win from any position, fast pace race, slow pace race, cop a check, miss the start, dry track, wet track.
Interesting question. Would say Kingston Town goes down as better horse but Makybe would win over longer distance on wet track. The King was more explosive and also had injuries missing 2 preparations so his record would have been even better.

What a horse...Must say though, I was rapt Murphy finally won a Melbourne Cup with Gurners Lane.
