The time depends on how dry your pellets are. Generally, I light the smoker first thing, then get all my gear together and get suited up. At that point I shake up the can to disperse the lit pellets throughout, then light the top again. By the time I walk out to the back yard and get set I can close the lid and it's good to go; so I'm walking to the back yard with the top open and flaming, then close it as I sit all my stuff down and watch the smoke start to pour out.
My smoker came with that insert, but you can make your own out of a family sized Bushs baked beans can. Just drill holes in the sides and bottom, then put a stainless nut and bolt on the bottom to keep it lifted off the bottom. I plan on doing a video of how to do this soon.
They don't make true mapp gas anymorez haven't for almost two decades. What you see at the store is an imitation and burns basically as hot as propane.
Bought this style of smoker tried your method worked flawlessly thanks a bunch !!

How long do you need to do this to get it lit?
