As someone who really loved this dish in Thailand and lives in a country where authentic, non-westernized Thai food is very hard to come by, you have my thanks. Delicious, low effort and super easy to make!
Llynya90 Thank you very much 🙏 You pinpointed the exact reason why I started this channel. When I lived abroad I noticed the “westernization” of Thai food as well as pan-Asian versions with Vietnamese, Chinese or other influences which de facto rendered “Thai” food non-Thai or at the very least unauthentic. I want to remedy that so people can see how easy it is to make authentic Thai by only sticking to the right ingredients and my simple process. Have a spicy day 🌶

Boy what a hit w the family. We used to get very authentic Thai food at Tarn Tip in Corvallis OR. But moved away. First time Ive made Thai dish that I thought was even close to real Thai cooking.

Gonna make this dish. I have a two boneless chicken thighs. And a lot of Holy Basil. It is hard to find, even in LA Thai Town, because people buy it as soon as they see it! I also have that sauce already made for Pad Kee Mao...so this should be easy!

This unmistakable Thai classic desperately needs more exposure in the Western sphere like over here in Melbourne, Australia. You'd be amazed for all the wrong reasons at how few Thai restaurants would have this on the lunch menu 😢
We normally make it for the festival of the tenth lunar month. My grandmother was very good at it, unfortunately I haven’t got the good recipe from her. I will speak to my relatives and try to re-create it so that I may share with you guys later. Thank you for your request
Chris Pacman well.. it would not taste like pad ka prao since it’s the basil that gives the unique character of this dish. I know some people that have made a version of this dish with basil they found in the supermarket. It can be done but the flavor will be somewhat different from the Thai original recipe.
Brian Berrios sounds like a great idea. Nothing beats fresh produce - particularly when you can control living environment, fodder and quality of life for the animals yourself
That is in essence the idea of this channel. Authentic Thai cooking without compromises, substitutes or fuss - these recipes are identical to what we make in our home in Thailand. Thanks for the appreciation /Amy
lightspeed Try to find and use Seasoning Soy Sauce. You can order it on Amazon (Golden mountain). Seasoning sauce is made from soy bean sauce, salt, sugar, water and food enhancers(not MSG). It can be used in any dish for adding flavor.
@@WorldofThaiFood Made it for dinner last night. Unfortunately only had Thai basil instead of holy basil. Will totally make it again with holy basil next time.
Hi. I’d say no but it’s up to you to try. In Thailand we would never use sweet Basil. Pad Ka Prao literally means stir fried holy Basil. The Sweet Basil (Horapa in Thai) has a different flavor profile. I know that it’s sometimes difficult to find Holy basil. Make it with sweet Basil but then call it Pad Horapa instead 😀
Manisha Joshi Yes, you can try, but compensate with more amount then. The taste won’t be the same but if you do the right thing with chillie, garlic, and basil , it will atleast have the signature scent. Happy cooking 🙏🌶
Hi, thank you for asking. The name Pad (stir fired) Ka Prao (Holy Basil) Gai (Chicken) suggests that Holy Basil is at the heart of this dish. Technically, the answer to your question must therefore be, no - you cannot make Pad Ka Prao without Holy Basil. People outside Thailand sometimes use Thai Sweet Basil (Horapa) because it is what they have access to in their local asian grocery stores. I wouldn't personally recommend it but you can try. Don't forget to let me know how it came out! Thanks for watching / Amy
Ive made this without even thai sweet basil, since neither of them are readily available. Regular ole sweet basil from the garden, and it's still delicious.
Exactly Khun Lisa! The beauty of Thai food culture is that you can eat what you want, whenever you feel like it. We usually make this for lunch or supper and then we enjoy the leftovers the next morning with a freshly fried egg /Amy
I’m going to try this with hoisin because I bought that by accident instead of oyster sauce! Also my chilies are wildly hot so I’m leaving them whole no seeds. I’m still worried. Last time was super hot 🥵
I've made this with different types of Basil in places like Sweden, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan and West Africa and somehow it still always comes out nice. I provide the authentic recipe as a guide but there is nothing wrong with experimenting. Go for it!

@@WorldofThaiFood just built a fortress for my future hens. Can't wait to taste a fresh egg again!
Brian Berrios sounds like a great idea. Nothing beats fresh produce - particularly when you can control living environment, fodder and quality of life for the animals yourself
@@WorldofThaiFood Yes! Thank you for sharing your recipes!
Brian Berrios Thank YOU for watching
I love this dish !!! I have made it. Thanks !!
luckybluebird77 wonderful! Glad you enjoyed my recipe video. Thanks for watching 🙏 Have a spicy 🌶 day
Trust local when they teach u how to cook their own dishes.
That is in essence the idea of this channel. Authentic Thai cooking without compromises, substitutes or fuss - these recipes are identical to what we make in our home in Thailand. Thanks for the appreciation /Amy
Is it possible to use regular soy sauce instead of seasoning soy sauce? What's the difference in taste?
lightspeed Try to find and use Seasoning Soy Sauce. You can order it on Amazon (Golden mountain). Seasoning sauce is made from soy bean sauce, salt, sugar, water and food enhancers(not MSG). It can be used in any dish for adding flavor.
Is the Thai holy basil different from holy basil (Tulsi)?
For seasoning sauce do you use Golden Mountain?
Yes! That is my preferred seasoning sauce
Mary G Crafts yes golden mountain
Yum! 😋👍
Glad you enjoyed the video! 🙏 Thanks for watching
@@WorldofThaiFood Made it for dinner last night. Unfortunately only had Thai basil instead of holy basil. Will totally make it again with holy basil next time.
🙏
Is holy basil comes with purple stems or hairy green stems?
Hi. You can actually find both types 🙏 Some are purple, others green - both have trichomes/hair
She's Beautiful 😍
Can i use sweet basil instead of holy basil?? 🤔
Thai Basil chicken is it curry or normal dish?
Pad Ka Prao Gai (and Kai Dow) 😜
Can I skip fish and oyester sauce ? I can only get soy sauce right now
Manisha Joshi Yes, you can try, but compensate with more amount then. The taste won’t be the same but if you do the right thing with chillie, garlic, and basil , it will atleast have the signature scent. Happy cooking 🙏🌶
Is there any other basil like herb that I can use instead of holy basil? It is not easy available where I live sadly..
Thanks a lot for your answer! :-D
Ive made this without even thai sweet basil, since neither of them are readily available. Regular ole sweet basil from the garden, and it's still delicious.
Great to know!! I have plenty of regular ole basil :D thanks a lot!!
gebert87 np! I actually made it for dinner this evening. Serrano's are a good stand in if you can't get bird's eye.
yum!
Welcome to World of Thai Food and thanks for watching. Lots more yummy recipes on the way!
Googled chugar to figure out what thai spice that was. Finally figured out it's sugar. :)
RawhideProductions1 😆😂 Thanks for watching
Can you eat the holy basil ?
Yes of course
@@WorldofThaiFood :)
I call this thai breakfast!
Enjoy cooking 🙏
Sadly I hve to use sweet Thai basi, as it is almost impossible to find holy basil around here. Even to grow it’s hard to find plants and seeds!
I've made this with different types of Basil in places like Sweden, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan and West Africa and somehow it still always comes out nice. I provide the authentic recipe as a guide but there is nothing wrong with experimenting. Go for it!
The color of that egg yolk at the end makes you realize how terrible quality 97% of store bought eggs are.
Yup good observation. These eggs are from our own free range chickens
