- Many of us spend countless hours investing in our education and our careers to make a better living, but how much time do we invest in ourselves to make a better life? In this painfully real but hopeful talk, CSULB Instructor, Melanie Whitney, elaborates on 3 things you will not learn inside a traditional classroom, but are absolutely necessary to create a life outside of it. Whether you’re a student or professional, this one will inspire you to finally answer the question, what am I doing with my life?
Melanie Whitney is a Communication Studies educator at CSULB. For six years, she developed community programs targeted towards underprivileged youth. Upon receiving her Master’s Degree in Communication Studies she left for Los Angeles in search of her dream job in Event Planning and Public Relations (that was short lived). After many let downs and lessons, she found herself in a unforeseen career that made her happier than ever, being a teacher. The biggest lesson she has learned is that college prepares us how to make a living, but not a life. Obtaining your degree is a small part of the equation. The real key to “success” is understanding who you are, what brings you joy, and accepting that those things will inevitably change.

The truth is: entering College without understanding your interest and passion will not lead to success, only to stress. Before entering college you must really know yourself and interests.
That’s not true. College is a period where you try different fields at least until your sophomore year and you may discover your passion or interests you never knew you had that you can pursue as a career path post graduation. Most people don’t have their future and their career path figured out at the end of their high school career. It’s too early
Well said
Not many people at 17 or 18 knows their passion because they haven’t experienced much
No offense but this answer made me turn off the video. Short. Sweet and true
Why? I ask because no one for certain either know their own or for that fact, anyone else what interest or passion is or much less how it can or is defined.
I admire her public-speaking skills
Love that she is so young and very realistic.. very impressive... love it.
Why doesn't this talk have many views🤔
You should not be going to college if: You are not interested, You are not good, You will not be using the information in your life.
Tell that to high school.
@@ErutaniaRose The last one is true for pretty much vas majority of degrees :/
I am in law college and i cant finish it, i simpley didnt find myself in that
I got PTSD from being in school. Literally. Not even kidding. I got, and still get, nightmares, panic attacks, and plenty of other symptoms. I don't care what someone offers me, I would rather go jump off a cliff into rocks than go back to school.
More and more teachers are actually teaching this in college along with there curriculum.
I love her vibe !
I like the triangle method
Im gonna try it

I've achieve success without a degree plus multiple times college dropout. Just buy buying text book in stem field and learned it then apply to real life do I need to spend $50,000 per yr at a top universities nope
I can guess you can learn some of the stuff by reading books (not all the "on-hands" stuff, you will hardly have a laboratory in your back-yard), but who would employ you for that knowledge if you do not have a paper saying you can apply your knowledge safely?
My dad can literally do everything a car mechanical can. He change the oil, lift cars, everything you could asked for, all learned from the internet.
Lemme tell you, college is useless especially with professor nowadays that can’t teach any subject at their professions, a man from RUclips with a Chinese accent can probably teach better
She was my professor at Cerritos College in 2017. Super awesome and really wanted you to succeed
Very realistic. Thank you Melanie.
This is a talking channel, so why is the volume shit? I can barely hear her and my volume is maxed out.

the audio is very quiet... college can still be a great experience, however.
Generation Z: I am not going to college. I don't need to. Even if I did, our American high school system has not prepared me for life outside of high school.
College is Round 2.
I don't need a degree to be successful. I need Wisdom, not only Knowledge. Our schools teach Knowledge and not *how* to pay bills or life skills. That is why we fall apart so easily.

And these university graduates are coming out with six figure debts. In the U.K. I've met graduates who owe £40k
@@lmusima3275 Ya, hard to get any job you care about and focus on anything when you have so much debt.
@@lmusima3275for Europe, owning 40k is rather a lot.
Need better audio guys.
I think the problem is the career choice.

Ironic, she talks about how college fails to make graduates successful but ADVOCATES FOR THEM BEING A FOOD STYLIST. Just pick a trade, get good at something.
