well actually, you could say that they do their job best when that's the case. You hear bad parts easily, but if they support and direct the focus to what should be in the foreground, that's what they were written for essentially (most commonly). Right?

So I guess 2nd violins are like altos in musical theatre? They have the weirdest harmony and are underrated but are the actual heroes who support the melody and make the sound fuller... right? (I'm a proud alto lol)
Kind of. Speaking as a biased violinist, the first violin part is often much harder and requires more skill. The harmony of an alto can often be harder than the melody of the soprano.
I'd say it's more like Soprano 2, violists are altos
I agree with you (I know I’m super late). Here’s how I think the strings and the choir line up:
Soprano: 1st violin
Alto: 2nd violin
Tenor: Viola- they’re never really in tune and we never have enough of them
Bass: cello/bass
Oh and also altos tend to get a very repetitive part (like the same note 16 times in a row) and it is very similar to the 2nd violin parts.
I really think viola would be closer to that

And then he goes learn second violin parts you are an advanced player. Then i said i dont know any second violin parts i only know first violin parts.

Hurrah for your teacher! He knew that playing second violin, playing in a section not as principal (so you learn what it's like to follow), and, if possible, also playing viola all contribute to making you a better concertmaster.
